Last night the judges proved to be tough on enforcing the rules. While it pains me to watch them mercilessly tear apart great dancers like Mario Lopez and Joey Lawrence, I agree that rules are there for a purpose and should be respected. If we didn't have them, we probably wouldn't be seeing much ballroom dancing. What a relief it is to know that this show is not just about impressing the audience with risky, fancy moves, but about emphasizing proper technique and fundamental ballroom dancing elements as well, which are key to promoting the art of ballroom dancing.
Still, the best performance of the evening was hands down the dramatic, highly-charged tango performed by Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff. Can we say what an amazing chemistry these two have? After watching such a mesmerizing performance, it's easy to dismiss the fact that they violated the rules yet again by breaking dance hold in the middle of their routine.
Joey Lawrence and Edyta Sliwinska suffer ed the judges' wrath as well because their performance included lifts and a rather unexpected and distasteful handstand. Last night, their performance seemed a bit too excited and over-the-top for my taste. However, who can blame them? Their near-perfect performance last week was difficult to top.
Monique Coleman continues to impress me considerably. She has clearly emerged as the most improved contestant on the show. Not only is she becoming more grounded on the dance floor, but she also displays the most solid and clean legwork among the celebrity female dancers. At this rate, she is likely to go far into this competition and end up in the top four.
The most disappointing performance had to be Sara Evans' rendition of the Jive. I could not stand the sight of those boots on her feet. Sara looks clumsy enough in heels; in boots she looked like she was trotting like a poney. While she did loosen up a bit more, she still lacked zest and power. Jive is supposed to b e a bouncy, energetic and high-powered dance. Instead Sara danced in a laid-back and cool manner, which might have been appropriate for Country Western dancing, but did not match the Jive's true spirit.
Who should go: Let's allow geriatric Jerry to finally go home and rest.
Who will end up going: Willa Ford. Her performance was once again disappointing and that ridiculous pink costume was screaming for her to be thrown off the plane. Besides, the audience at home will want Jerry back so he can learn the waltz for his daughter's wedding. Awwww...
