Brokeback Mountain Movie When Love Won't Count

After a number of months hearing once and again a ton of good comments about Brokeback Mountain movie I finally had the opportunity to watch this movie in the theaters. I know Im kind of late, even Oscars have passed, but it took sometime for the film to arrive in my town.

Curious sensation what I felt when the movie started playing, after hearing so many comments about the film I was at the point from which I already knew, at least from the morbid side, what the story was about and who was whom on the screen. At least thats what I thought.

It all starts in the distance; one truck passing by the hills and then we find one young man outside an office that seems to be far away from everything. Then our second character arrives almost pushing his old black truck. It is now that we realize what they are looking forthey need a job.

They are hired to take care of sheep in the mountains of Wyoming, they will spend the summer together in the mountains, they will live and work side by side during all those days. As they arrive to their destination, del Mar , feeling more confident, releases a few words from his mouth and starts talking a bit more and showing some signals of sympathy to his buddy. He is a tough young man with a family history with resemblance of a nightmare from one of those Dickens stories. No one suspects anything out of normal is happening in the story. Days seem to be passing without any great novelty.

But something new happens, something out of the regular tasks of those working days and nights at Brokeback Mountain. Something has arisen between the two men, it is like a storm coming from nowhere that has entered their lives and that will mark them forever. It seems to be just a passionate episode of the lonely at the beginning, a dream that none will ever know. But reality dictates something different, what just happened, will continue happening once and again, they are attached forever by a force that mak es or bends the will of anyone; something we may call, love.

Summer is over and both men must go back to their worlds away from the mountain, to their previous lives, but inside them in a secret place they know those lives exist no more. They have been confronted with their most inner reality and it wont go away.

They will marry wives and strive to pursue a normal life just to realize they are being a pair of fakes. They dont belong to that traditional society, they belong only to each other since those day in the mountains. They finally decide and meet again outside del Mars home, a poor second floor apartment. He hasnt had much luck in life since childhood and it seems to accentuate everyday, now even his wife knows about his preferences. We are inclined to conclude his only luck and fortune in life is what he feels for Jack, his fishing buddy.

Things go wrong at del Mars home, marriage brakes and he is left alone fighting for life in a society that would stone him to death if they only knew. But there are bright moments too, and those happen at Brokeback where he regularly meets Jack who travels from far away Texas to meet the only love he has known.

By the end of the story there have been conflicts arising between the partners; too much distance and just a scarce proximity can not improve any relation. They have just had a bad encounter in their paradise, they part away with the promise of meeting again and fix what can be fixed when suddenly the story takes us to a scene where del Mar receives the notice of Jacks death in a cold post card with letters that say deceased. Everything indicates he has been murdered, he was caught by those who wont let the others happen. And now Ennis del Mar has been left aside from society, with his love eternally longing for Jack and a daughter that will get married soon and who doesnt know his dad is a loner for a reason; and love wont count.

Da Vinci Code Copyright Infringement on a Genre?

Boy the Da Vinci Code has no doubt seen its share of controversy and has sold millions of copies because of it. Do you have a copy of the Best Selling Da Vinci Code and if you do you are certainly not alone. Just go into any of your friends homes and see for yourself, there it is on their shelves too.

So, what is the controversy now? Well it seems that some people of faith are a little upset with the story and trying to figure out a way to sue the author. This time for copyright infringement as they say that the Da Vinci Code has lifted some theories or premises from a couple of other books written previously. Namely the Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. They say he stole their central theme, which is rather interesting as we know that Romeo and Juliet was re-done as Westside Story and we all know that nearly every story is modeled off of a certain general theme, storyline or genre.

We also know that copyright law is meant to protect actual words, complex sentence s and paragraphs of text, or even titles and subtitles of works. However it was never meant to be used as a tool to attack another for a competitive reason, deny someone their right to freedom of the press or protect a theory, theme or genre of a literary work. So what is the deal here? Obviously this is a frivolous suit, but it is also a sign of the times and shows problems with our civilization and our legal system. Consider this in 2006.

Modeling A platform for Bollywood

What do Aishwarya Rai, Juhi Chawla, Arjun Rampal ,Sushmita Sen, Diya Mirza, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea, Shiny Ahuja, John Abraham, Celina Jailtley and Priyanka Chopra have in common apart from their killer looks and awesome bodies? Yes, they shared one platform namely, modeling. These model turned Actors were highly successful in modeling before stepping into the world of Bollywood. Many Actors believe that modeling gives them a stable foundation to be recognized before getting their first break in Bollywood. Most of these stars believed that modeling is a stepping stone to Bollywood. Without entering into the world of modeling, their life would take a very different turn by making their entry into Bollywood more difficult and inaccessible.

Most model turned Actors stepped into modeling by catching our attention in beauty pageants. Who can forget Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai sashay down the ramp after winning their titles? No one. These beauty queens insp ired millions of Indians who watched them and wanted to be like them in every manner. Young girls desired to look like them and take part in these beauty pageants. Mothers of teenaged daughters would pester their kids to dress well and push them forward for beauty pageants. With the advent of these exotic beauties,

w:st=on>India was in for a beauty revolution. These strong willed beauty queens had no looking back . They reached their destination - Bollywood in no time.

With this instance, many young aspiring Actors looked up to their role models to pursue their much sought after Bollywood dream. Modeling is an arena more to do with beautiful personalities than fashion per say. No one is throwing dust one anyone's eyes here, as it is a well known fact that, clothes look good on a beautiful body rather than on someone ill-proportionate. Beauty is all over the place and looking uniquely gorgeous is the mantra for models. These stars surely had what it took to be a H indi film star and yes, they did it with style.

It is well known preconceived notion that models can't act. There were many instances when models were criticized heavily and were shown the exit. However, over a period of failures, there were many of these same models who proved critics wrong. For instance, Aishwarya Rai was considered plasticky in her debut film Aur Pyar Ho Gaya but with time, she set by Bollywood by storm in her stellar performances in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. John Abraham is another actor who has also won several accolades in his films like Jism, Dhoom and Taxi no.9211. Athough Shiny Ahuja is just 2 films old, his mind blowing performance in Hazaaron Khwaishye Aisi and Gangster has won him millions of fans.

Many young and upcoming Actors like Samir Dattani believe that modeling provides them easy entry to Bollywood. Daisy Boppana of Garam Masala fame have been cast with extremely successful Actors like Akshay Kumar and John Abraham. K atrina Kaif famous for ads campaigns like Seagram's, Lakme and Dyna have acted in films like Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya and Humko Deewana Kar Gaye cast opposite Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Models like Deepika Padukone and Shivani Kapur are the new entrants to Bollywood after a successful stint in modeling? What lies ahead, only time will tell. Watch this space for more.

I Claudius (DVD) Review

Think history is boring? Think again! I Claudius is proof that an educational film can also be one of the most popular and entertaining series ever produced. A 1976 mini-series, starring many of the best known theatrical performers of its day, I Claudius is one of, if not the, greatest productions chronicling the history of the Roman Empire. Covering the period from the later years of Augustus's rule as the first emperor of Rome to the death of Emperor Claudius, I Claudius takes a look at the social and political underpinnings and developments of the Roman Empire through the eyes of Claudius, an often overlooked member of the emperor's family. An epic in the true sense of the word, I Claudius should be on every film buff's viewing list

A young male connected to the family line of Emperor Augustus, Claudius suffers from a strange limp and an odd stutter which make him appear to be a simple-minded youth. But Claudius maintains a keen intellect, and he observes the even ts around him with meticulous precision. As the end of Augustus's long reign as emperor nears its end, the ruler is in desperate search of an heir. But what he doesn't know is that his wife Livia is determined to see her son from a previous marriage, Tiberius, ascend to the throne. As such, Livia will stop at nothing to murder and ruin those who stand in the way - such as far more noble and deserving heir Germanicus. Through drowning, poisoning, and less subtle means, she insures Tiberius becomes the next in the line of succession

Meanwhile, Claudius observes from the shadows as the ambitious Sejanus (Patrick Stewart) conspires to obtain the throne and the infamous Caligula rises to power. When his relative is murdered because of his terrible reign of insanity, Claudius is thrust upon the throne, and he attempts to rule with a firm hand of justice and restore the republic to its rightful place of power

Wrought with suspense, the I Claudius DVD series will make it s viewers question how any human survived the era known as the ancient Roman Empire. The murders, double-crossings, and various affairs seem to be drawn from a fictional paperback found on drugstore shelves - not in the pages of a history book. But I Claudius stays true to the written account of Roman Emperor Claudius who wrote his memoirs during the few years of his reign as the supreme leader of the greatest empire ever to exist on Earth. The result is a story more intriguing than any book or film since produced

With superb theatrical performances by the entire cast (including Patrick Stewart as Sejanus), I Claudius is an engrossing storyline about the true-to-life people and events that shaped the history of ancient Rome. Like the popular prime-time soap opera Dallas, viewers are drawn to the intrigue surrounding the various characters without even realizing they're learning history in the process! Given its historical accuracy, brilliant dialogue, and ingenious per formances, I Claudius ranks as a definite must-see series of films. In fact, one of the top five best of all time

The Genesis of the Daleks A Review

Many Dr Who aficionados say this is one of the best Doctor Who series. After seeing the New Doctor Who series it is quite a shock to see the changing production values. I remember being captivated by Doctor Who when very young. I really did used to go and hide behind the settee when frightened by the monsters, even though there appearance seems very basic now. One problem with these old series is that the production set seems to have been made on an episode of blue peter using a few toilet rolls and tin foil. Just for one example the Vlads build a rocket which is going to destroy a civilisation but it really does look like it has been made out of a empty cardboard kitchen role. Also the acting at times appears rather wooden and strained, not helped by having a set so small it seems as if it was filmed in a small BBC cupboard.

However these are relatively minor distractions. The script is excellent and also believable. Something which is often lacking in Science ficti on. Tom Baker as the Doctor is excellent but the real highlight of the show is the evil Davros who conveys a genuine menace and evil, his voice is particularly striking and eerily threatening. There is no doubt that the writer Terry Nation had in mind the Nazi regime and Nazi ideology when creating the daleks. Their instinctive nature to exterminate all beings who are not perfect clearly modelled on the Nazi racial purity theory. What the series does is give a realistic and believeable course for the creation of such a creature. Rather being an abstract monster you realise how such creatures can in theory come about. There is also a nice irony at the end of the series when Davros himself comes to realise the effects of the creature he has created.

When watching Doctor Who you often feel it is good but is let down by certain things; like unbelievable scripts, or a James Bond tendency to save the world at the last moment. But this series avoids many of the clichs. It is interesting, for example, to see the Doctor wrestle with his conscience about whether to exterminate the infant Daleks, even though the embionic daleks try to strangle him. However it would be very good to see a modern remake of a similar script and idea. With the vastly improved special effects apparent in the new series you wouldnt have to keep deal with the poor quality of the objects and special effects.

The Genesis of the Daleks was first screened on 8th March 1975 and was directed by David Maloney. The Doctor was played by Tom Baker. His assistants Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sulivan were played by Elisabeth Sladen and Ian Marter.

My Award Winning Blockbuster Movie

I was lying in my bunk fully awake and making a Movie! I had all sorts of things going on, collisions and hijacks, the Captain trying to smash down the door of the Chiefs cabin with a fire axe and the drunken mate throwing the logbooks over the side! I even took it as far as the Second Engineer trying to get the oiler to sleep with him, the second officer deserting with the Captains wife and a suicidal electrician who saw giant ants turning into human beings (they were coming out of the Sea to eat him).

It was a fantastic film, a blockbuster to be sure but instead of the cameras rolling, a frustrated Director and a crew of thousands it was all in my head and I was not getting any sleep because of it. So here I am, writing something down in the hope that once my over active imagination has been placed onto paper I can switch off and get some much needed rest before the new day kicks off!

There are many films set at Sea, many featuring submarines and large bearde d Russians discussing mutiny behind wafer thin doors and those completely removed Titanic-style dramas that true Seafarers cannot watch because of the countless mistakes and impossibilities inherent in the plot. Then there are those cheap and nasty productions designed for the horror flick lovers: the Sea snakes and giant whales that attack at dawn or of lunatics on yachts tying woman up for no apparent reason. All of these films barely resemble reality at Sea, part to do with the fact that half of them are filmed on a set where the actors sway from one foot to the other and the backdrop lifts up and down behind them and partly a result of the Directors belief that nobody will notice! Sad really as Seafarers cannot watch these Movies because of the poor direction and sets and even sadder because landlubbers are given the completely wrong impression of what the life is all about.

I did once see a good Movie set at Sea! It is a black and white film with the lead role played by Humphrey Bogart! In fact, it was an excellent insight into what life can be like onboard, and what life is still like; I just cannot remember what it was called. To put it bluntly, the Movies around that are filmed on or about the Sea and life therein are utter garbage and from where I am sitting unworthy of being watched. No wonder all landlubbers think that Seafarers are always covered from head to foot in tattoos, spit and swear allot and have a brai n the size of a peanut (or in their pants). While this fact maybe true to a certain extent we are not all tarred with the same brush!

Life at Sea is not all about sailing from one port to another with a cargo, there are people onboard Ships, individuals who may or may not interact well with their shipmates and who may or may not live in harmony day in day out! Every Seafarer is a character and each could write a novel filled with amazing experiences. We were not all trying to hide in a cardboard box on London docks when the press gang came along; our backgrounds are as diverse from each other as say a Russian ballet dancers is from a Portuguese coal miner. Yet we all jog along and keep the ship in motion whilst taking the unexpected expectedly and expecting the unexpected at every turn.

Here though is the underlying problem. To talk about the Sea and the life is only possible with a like-minded person! A Seafarer can converse easily with another Seafarer about his last trip and the muddle of crazy occurrences that came his way. He certainly cannot do so with a landlubber. I recall many a time when having come home from a trip to Sea my old school mates would ask me so, how was it, tell us all about it and so I used to start off with a typical day in the life of me.

Well, this chief arrived onboard to relieve me. We were up the Fly River in Papua New Guinea, stuck on a sandbank and having a party on our top deck. The top deck has this plastic grass on it and all the other Ships used to stop on their way past and come on over to join in the fun. Crocodile Dundee was with us, he lived on this small island in the outback and made money catching crocodiles and making alcohol from coconuts, he was Australian and a total weirdo. Well, I was sitting their having had a few to many toddies (coconut juice) and smoking this large homemade cigarette (a wad of Irish tobacco rolled in newspaper) when my relief just keeled over and fell flat on the floor. Turned out he had gangrene on his toes! He was to be shipped out and as we were in the swamp and stuck on a sandbank, my second engineer disappeared into the jungle with him in his arms! We heard he got to the hospital a week or so later but by then we had other things to keep us occupied! Anyway, the next day we had to make a mad dash for the mouth of the river as we heard that the Indonesians were moving large guns to the border of Papua New Gu inea, something they do quite frequently but it always causes panic. The only way we could get off the sand bank was to tie our winch wire around a tree on the opposite bank and pull ourselves off. The tree bent so far down under the strain that it touched our back deck but it worked. Yeah, I remember that night well, especially when I used to slap my hand onto my thigh and kill twenty mosquitoes every time still amazed I never caught malaria!

Anyway, did I tell you about the girl I met there and how I was chased out of the country with a machete-wielding engineer who was extremely drunk?

I must admit that I never really got past the first sentence of any tale of the Sea! I would usually have been interrupted by somebody uttering pull the other one or are you on drugs. If for some miraculous reason I succeeded in starting another sentence I would find my listeners concentration rapidly receding, a glazed look would slide down over their eyes and I knew that the y were not taking anything that I was saying in (or if it was going in it was rapidly falling out of the other ear without pause in-between). I lost all my friends from school within one short years of being at Sea (or did I lose them after the first trip?). I have never met any of them again. I mean realistically, what does a painter or a plumber or for that matter a high-flying lawyer or a doctor who has never left Edinburgh, have in common with a Seafarer!

Today, any friends that I have (who are not sailors) no longer ask me about my trips! They get all confused if I describe the life, they turn weird and scrape around in their chairs as if I am discussing quantum physics in Chinese and they typically try to change the subject or suggest that, a drink would be nice. There are certain people ou t there who understand and appreciate the life involved. Nurses strangely enough seem to have empathy with the Seafarer (a high proportion of marriages resulting) maybe because both jobs are stressful and often quick change and adaptability are an inherent feature! Journalists who travel frequently whose middle names are danger and who live on the edge as if it was just another mundane day in an otherwise scheduled existence, also seem to have some understanding.

Therefore, I do not talk about the life at Sea anymore! I go home and I talk about the mundane, I discuss football and politics. I reach out to the environment and makes waves about the over reaching power of Americans and I discuss my landlubbers friends lives which makes me yawn (if I cannot talk about my life then what choice do we ha ve to keep a friendship alive except talk about theirs). I know that my landlubber friends all regard me with some trepidation; they know that I have another life but they have not a clue or even a picture to base this life upon and are too frightened to ask.

Very recently, a Seafarer said to me I must write a book about my life at Sea. Looking back my response was rather harsh! In fact, I bit at him, what on earth for, nobodies going to read it. I suppose I would be wrong about nobody reading it. There are for starters about 60,000 British Seafarers hanging around the world today. Unfortunately some of them do not often read books, 10% would not want to read a book about the Sea, 10% might not see the book as they live in Thailand, Brazil or the South Pole and a few thousand more might not be interested because they are too busy enjoying a life-at-Sea! So what would be the point?

As with films, many novels available are set at Sea! Moby Dick for starters (I cannot comment on this large and cumbersome look-a-like telephone Directory, as I never got past the first page). Then there are the Dirk Pitt series, the adventures set on reSearch vessels belonging to a US Government branch called NUMA. Although Sea-appropriate words like ship, waves and ahoy, me old mate crop up on nearly every page, the factual information within those pages reminds me of the times when I used to pretend to girls that I was a Plastic Surgeon (I used to believe that this occupational white lie gave forth greater rapport than simply a sailor). If they had asked me, anything more than what they should take for a heada che, I would have been clueless but they never did, thankfully.

The situation that exists is that the world is filled with two types of people. Those who know absolutely nothing about the Sea and the life on the ocean waves, who frequently think they know about it and who write and make films based on Ships and the Sea, which are very incorrect as to reality and fact. Then we have on the other side of the coin the Seafarers, those who know exactly what goes down upon the ocean waves, who knows the life inside out but who cannot talk about it.

It was with this logic in mind that I lay there in bed making my Movie. If I could perhaps film a blockbuster set at Sea, were the direction and information within are replicated from the real McCoy, I could perhaps start giving to landlubbers some real ity. The hero could be Arnold Swarznegger, the damsel in distress Kate Holmes. I could have Sea snakes and wormholes, sinking Ships and murder, my Movie is my oyster.

Now though, having written the above, something more down to earth would be appropriate. A series might be apt, a fictional setting but based upon reality. Adventurous, were everything has happened before at Sea! I could have a couple of lead characters, the Captain and a Chief Engineer would be a good start, some women, wives perhaps or girls met in a bar. I could have anger and hatred, madness and hysterical laughter. Maybe some quiet moments of heart rendering reflection and then some disaster as the hurricane hits! Thinking further this could be a comedy, one of the worlds best means to portray a lifestyle.

Episode 1: The introduction to the characters and life onboard with a barbecue on the back deck!

Episode 2: The day the sailors get very drunk and attempt to bring some bar girls back to the ship in Vietnam. Meanwhile the Captain of ample girth gets himself stuck in his toilet and has to be rescued.

Episode 3: The day some pirates try to board the ship disguised as the Indonesian Navy and the chief engineer gives a speech that sets everybody laughing hysterically.

Episode 4: The day the engine room floods with water and the ship prepares to abandon. But nobody can find the second mate and the wife of the second engineer.

Episode 5: The day the storm struck hard, the oiler cant get out of bed and the gay cook tries to pull out his back tooth with a pair of pliers donated by the chief.

Episode 6: The day that the owner of the ship comes onboard to find a blue-Movie on and everybody watching it. He also finds the washing machine full of live fish, a dead body in the meat room and a pair of women underpants as a dinner place mat.

Episode 7: The day the mate accidentally falls asleep in the bridge toilet whilst on watch, when the oiler blows a strong chemical into the accommodation AC inlet and when somebody puts glue into the boots of the third engineer.

Episode 8: The day when Christmas comes and the chief gives another speech, when the Christmas dinner ends up on the floor and when the Captain decides that the Cadet should be in-charge for the day.

It does not have to be a comedy all those things happen as part of everyday life! Some of them were not laughable at the time!

The Dukes Of Hazzard (Season 2) DVD Review

In the late 70's and early 80's, television viewers fell in love with The Dukes of Hazzard, a weekly foray into the fictional setting of Hazzard County, Georgia. Cousins Bo and Luke Duke (John Schneider and Tom Wopat) spent each episode trying to do good, while the loveable Boss Hogg (Sorrell Booke) concocted various schemes for making money and having the Duke boys, who always foiled his plans, thrown in jail for violating their probation (the result of a deal with the federal government to end the centuries-old Duke family tradition of bootlegging).

The Dukes of Hazzard (Season 2) DVD provides a number of famous episodes, including guest appearances by Cale Yarborough and The Oak Ridge Boys. Deputy Sheriff Cletus (Rick Hurst) also makes his first appearance in the shows second season. Boss Hogg nephew Hughie Hogg (Jeff Altman) also makes his first appearance. With Waylon Jenningss weekly narrations as The Balladeer (performing artist of the shows legendary, chart-t opping theme song), The Dukes of Hazzard provides hours of family-friendly programming as Boss and Roscoe match wits with the Duke clan

Subtle Racial Dynamics at Play on The Apprentice

The Apprentice is one of my favourite shows. Why? It's simple. It feels like home. It reminds me of some of the tough political dynamics and intrigue that one experiences when they are working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing corporation.

The pressure is on! On The Apprentice, the cut throat competition that is usually behind the scenes and disguised in the form of subtle innuendo, is exposed and laid bare for all to see.

This was apparent during the season 4 finale and the controversy that followed it. Let me refresh your memory. Dr. Randal Pinkett, a highly educated and experienced African American business man, was crowned as The Apprentice. When all the excitement that accompanied the announcement had subsided, Donald Trump asked Randal if he felt a case could be made for Rebecca to share his title. Randal responded ....this is the Apprentice, not the Apprentii. The controversy that followed Randal's response was unprecedented in the history of The Apprent ice.

Dr. Randal Pinkett was a Rhodes Scholar. He has a Ph.D. and MBA from MIT. Combine that with over 12 years of business experience with giants like Lucent and an entrepreneurial track record. His education, business experience and track record on the show were HEAD and shoulders above Rebecca's. Compare Rebecca's 1-2 record with Randal's 3-0 record. Remember, Randal pretty well handed Rebecca her only win. Combine that with Randal's outstanding leadership skills, and his incredible likability.

Now I am not taking anything away from Rebecca. She is bright, hard working, and determined. She overcame some incredible odds and thrived under pressure. She even completed the season with a broken ankle. In the grand scheme of things, though, people seem to forget that Randal was coping with the death of his grandmother which was an even MORE traumatic experience than a broken ankle.

Now I am not taking anything away from Rebecca. She is bright, hard working, and determined. She overcame some incredible odds and thrived under pressure. She even completed the season with a broken ankle. In the grand scheme of things though, people forget that Randal was coping with the death of his grandmother which was an even MORE traumatic experience than a broken ankle.

So, was the Donald out of line when he asked Dr. Randal Pinkett to share his crown with Rebecca? Was Randal being selfish when he said no? Some writers have even gone so far as to brand Donald's question as racist. I think that this misses the mark. In my opinion, more subtle dynamics were at play that give us insight into some of the hidden barriers that African Americans face in corporate America.

It's all about perception and it's not conscious. Donald did select Randal as his Apprentice and other African Americans have done well on the show.

Remember, the age old advice that many Black parents have given to their children You have to be twice as qualified to get the same job as a White person? The Randal/Rebecca incident plays this out perfectly.

I am not for a second taking anything away from Bill Ranic. He is the Apprentice because he earned it. However, let's contrast how Randal's victory was handled with the season one finale.

This time we have African American Kwame facing off against Bill. Kwame had FAR more experience and a much solid tack record than Rebecca both on and off the show. He held a B.S. in Business Administration (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and an MBA (Harvard). He had entrepreneurial experience with a number of dot coms and experience with Fortune 500 companies including solid sales and marketing experience with Procter & Gamble a stint as an Investment Manager for Goldman Sachs on Wall Street. Yet, despite all of this, was Bill asked if Kwame should share his title? No!

The results of a poll on the NBC's official web site for The Apprentice are telling:

Who would yo u have hired?

- Randal 42%
- Rebecca 58%

It is unbelievable that, despite Randal's STELLAR track record, Rebecca was STILL perceived as the better performer.

A bright and talented but relatively inexperienced Caucasian woman whose only win on the show was virtually handed to her by Randal was perceived as being more of a super-star than Randal. In fact, it boggles my mind that consideration was even given to having TWO Apprentii.

It all comes down to perception and a lot of this is not conscious. That is why it's difficult to address subtle racial dynamics in the corporate world.

Sadly, even in 2006, a person of African descent has to out perform his White co-workers by a LONGSHOT to be even CONSIDERED as an equal. On the Apprentice we once again saw that art imitates life demonstrated in FULL force. The more things change, the more they remain the same.

No. Randal was not ungracious. He was appropriately assertive in response to a ver y difficult and unexpected question. Good for you Randal!

Reality TV How Real Is It?

We call it Reality TV. But how real is it? And is it unique? Well, this is an argument that many people will have their opinion on. And while we're not going to try to take a position one way or the other, we are going to ask a few questions that should at least spark some kind of debate.

For starters. let's cover the question of how unique reality TV really is. In order to do that, we have to try to define what reality TV is. While nobody has ever given it a formal definition (go on look up reality TV in the dictionary) we have come to regard reality TV as television that is non scripted and with real people instead of professional actors. Well, if that's the case, then wouldn't The Price Is Right also be considered reality TV? What's that you say? It's got a professional host by the name of Bob Barker? Well, for that matter, American Idol has not just one but four celebrities on the show. So how is that any more real than Bob Barker's show?

The tr uth is, reality TV is not so unique. It's been around for a long time. Back in the day before we called it reality TV we had shows like Star Search. Even before that we had Amateur Hour. The list of reality TV shows reads like a who's who of television. Yet, for some reason, this reality craze seems to have taken off because for whatever reason, people think of it as being new. I guess we have short memories.

What about the issue of how real it is? This is something you can rip apart from today until the cows come home. Just pick a show. Take American Idol. Some of the contestants on this show are one step away from being professional singers. Okay, you want to argue that real people can be talented? No problem. But what about fear factor? How many people do you know in their everyday lives go around eating bugs? I seriously doubt that there are many people who would view this as anywhere near reality.

Take a show like survivor. If you think this show isn't scripted then you don't know what goes on behind the scenes. Not only is it scripted but there are times where scenes are either shot over and over until they are gotten just right or plain edited to look the way the producers want. What's real about that? And Richard Hatch? Boy, if he wasn't a star in the making. There was nothing real about that guy unless you live in Hollywood and your best friend is Tom Hanks. We could go on and on with examples of reality TV being nowhere near real. And yet, there are those who will argue that reality TV is quite real. Again, we're not going to try to convince anyone either way but if you look at the evidence you at least have to admit that there is some room for debate.

Now THAT'S real.

Movie Rental Coupons

In todays fast paced world, people are always looking out for a chance when they can simply relax. Hollywood Movies can provide the perfect getaway. Watching Movies with family and friends is a conventional source of entertainment. However, it is not always possible to visit a theater. For these reasons, Movie rental services are very popular nowadays. To further advertise themselves, these services usually provide Movie rental coupons.

As the name suggests these are discount vouchers made available to the consumer. However, a number of people refrain from using these coupons. For the most part, certain coupons have been difficult to redeem. In other instances, some people consider Movie rental coupons to be freebies. This leads them to believe these coupons are simply marketing gimmicks that should not be taken seriously.

Despite some market trepidation, Movie rental coupons are gaining popularity. It is true that these vouchers are es pecially designed to increase profitability for Movie rental services. Movie rentals usually offer these perks to club members to boost rentals. A number of these coupons allow customers to rent two Movies for the price of one. Others offer simple discounts, exchange Movie rentals, or a specified number of Movie rentals for a particular time period, under a discount flat rate.

Nowadays, a number of online Movie rental services offer memberships and provide Movie rental coupons to members. These coupons are sent to the members mailing account and need to be printed in order to use them. Since these online services take some time to mail the Movies to customers, these coupons are designed to compensate for the time loss. These Movie rental coupons are redeemable at specified stores mentioned by the online Movie rental service.

Movie rental coupons are mostly available with the service provider. The Internet is home to a number of Movie rental coupon Web sites. An increasing number of Movie rental companies advertise Movie rental coupons to increase memberships. Using Movie rental coupons can effectively reduce costs while hiring Movies. These vouchers can be redeemed to facilitate optimum entertainment for discounted rates .

Conditional Access Who's on First?

Conditional access (CA) controls access to digital television (DTV) services via encrypting programs people watch. Its like the umpire in a ball game that calls your TV signal safe and lets you watch the show you want to see. There are various conditional access technologies, although they are all based on ATSC and DVB-compliant CA systems.

Conditional access has three basic elements: broadcast equipment, set-top box, and security module. The broadcast equipment generates encrypted programs transmitted to your television or cell phone.

The interactive TV set-top box filters your signals and passes them on to the security module. The security module authorizes these programs for decryption. The programs are decrypted in real time and sent back to the set-top box for display. It's like at the ball game, the pitcher looks at the catcher, the catcher at the batter, the batter at the third base coach and the third base coach at the bat boy. If every one's set, he p itches the ball.

Subscriber Management System (SMS) - Interactive TV The brains of Interactive TV are in the Set-top box on top of your TV set. Your subscriber management system requests the permission to provide the authorization needed to view the programs. Other systems acts as a backup system in case your left stranded on third base..

Subscriber Authorization System (SAS) - Interactive TV The clean up hitter in your access system responsible, waves your signal so you can watch the ball game on TV with your kids. There is also has a security module so you can keep your kids from watching gulls mate and people from charging their TV shows to your account. The Interactive TV wizards thought of everything... they even built a converter to watch digital signal on your old TV set the one had since your team won the World Series twenty five years ago.

Amazing technologies like Interactive TV are costly to develop, operate and upgrade. With out conditional a ccess, the only way many people would see their favorite team is out at the ball park. Also, Believe it or not, many people go to the ball game and watch replays on cell phones powered by Hey, I think he just hit a home run!

NDS is a leading conditional access solutions provider and Interactive TV technology company. For more information, read the NDS conditional access white paper.

Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 3) DVD Review

Nominated for 20 Emmys and winner of a Golden Globe for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy), Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of the more clever and hilarious shows on TV. The HBO original series is the brainchild of Seinfeld co-creator and writer Larry David, whose life maintains a peculiar resemblance to the quasi-fictional George Costanza. And just like George Costanza and his neurotically-low self-esteem (i.e. God doesn't want me to be successful), Curb Your Enthusiasm propagates a Murphy's Law theme of what can go wrong will go wrong. It's a true-to-life reality show about nothing in which every episode is certain to cause comedy connoisseurs everywhere to tremble in enthusiastic anticipation

The Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 3) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere Chet's Shirt in which Larry skips his dentist's dinner party in order to purchase waiters' uniforms for he and Ted Danson's restaurant venture. Along the way, Lar ry purchases matching shirts for himself and Danson, but when Ted discovers a small rip in his shirt, it causes a rift between the two which leads to further disasters for Larry Other notable episodes from Season 3 include The Benadryl Brownie in which Larry and Richard Lewis conspire to bake Benadryl-laced brownies for Richard's hive-stricken, medication-averse girlfriend, and Krazee-Eyez Killah in which Larry is accused of betraying the confidence of Wanda Sykes's rapper boyfriend, Krazee-Eyez Killah

Below is a list of episodes included on the Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 3) DVD:

Episode 21 (Chet's Shirt) Air Date: 09-15-2002
Episode 22 (The Benadryl Brownie) Air Date: 09-22-2002
Episode 23 (Club Soda and Salt) Air Date: 09-29-2002

Sick Twisted and Perverse: The Mystique of Midnight Movies

When you buy a Movie ticket for a much-reviewed, two thumbs up major studio release starring A-list actors, you pretty much know what to expect. When you load up on caffeine and sugar to attend a Midnight Movie, however, you never know what might appear on the screen. In fact, the allure of Midnight Movies isnt the time the Film is scheduled, but the risk involved with watching something designed to push your buttons.

While youre physically safe and comfortably snuggled inside the theater, you can be exposed to shocking, crude, or frightening images that are intended to make viewers uncomfortable -- physically, emotionally, and intellectually. They may be Horror Films, Concert footage, over-the-top Animation, or off-color comedy, but Midnight Movies have one thing in common: You certainly wont be bored.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show has long been a popular Midnight feature because of its bizarre interactive blend of comedy, violence, and sexuality. The Blair Witch Project, which premiered as a Midnight Movie at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999, is another late-night favorite because of its guerilla-style camera techniques coupled with its pseudo-documentary presentation and growing sense of fear and doom.

Art houses and second-run theaters may feature Midnight Movies regularly or on special occasions, such as Halloween, but you can usually find the best selection of outrageous Midnight feature Films and shorts programs by attending a Film Festival.

The Midnight Movies program for the 2006 Florida Film Festival, for instance, includes Ben Meades American Stag, which explores the origin of dirty Movies, Brett Leonards Feed, which examines a fetish subculture devoted to large women, and Joshua and Jeffrey Crooks Salvage, a thriller about a w omans gruesome nightmares. Titles from the Midnight shorts program include Phone Sex Grandma and The Tozer Show: The Urine Bomber.

Matthew Curtis, programming director for the Florida Film Festival and Enzian Theater, says many factors determine which Movies make it to the Midnight slot. Usually we like Midnight Movies to be edgy, off-the-wall, very funny, sexual, perverse, visionary, extreme, cutting edge, violent -- something that people can't see anywhere else, he says.

Likewise, Thomas Ethan Harris, former programming director for the Los Angeles Film Festival, says when he schedules Midnight Movies he seeks obsessed, twisted, satirical work that re-envisions a genre.

The first thing to look for in a Midnight Movie is creative obscurity, Harris says. It doesn't have to be a weird cult Film or a Horror classic, but it must be inspired by a far-reaching inspiration that has a style or look that is more challenging than traditional coverage of the subj ect.

Harris observes that although Midnight programs have changed recently to include all genres rather than just Horror Films, the type of people who attend remains the same. Midnight audiences are a really intelligent group of people. They have to know Film history in order to understand new satire.

Midnight Horror Films usually attract young male audiences and Midnight musicals attract older mixed audiences -- two of many examples that each Film must find its niche.

Midnight audiences tend to be a little more open-minded and forgiving, Curtis says. Although the majority of Midnight audiences are college-aged males, we see lots of mixed crowds because women can enjoy a sick joke as much as the next guy.

So if youre looking for a sick joke, new satire, far-reaching inspiration, creative obscurity, or just something different from your normal routine, skip the afternoon matinee and head for a Midnight Movie.

Close Encounters for the Dr. Phil Show

Are we alone? Not according to one woman who believes Aliens are watching her every move. A recent assignment for Solana Productions Inc. found their crew recording an unusual story for the Dr. Phil show.

The woman believed she was visited by Aliens in the desert one night years ago. Since then she is convinced they are responsible for just about anything unusual that happens to her. This includes her computer crashing when she was writing the show to tell of her experiences. Apparently the Aliens try to prevent her from revealing their presence to anyone. The womans husband and four children dont believe in Aliens and tease her about her fears.

Strangely enough, when it came time to shoot b-roll the camera developed a mysterious problem. Solana crews always carry backup recorders so the shoot continued. But the next day our engineer found the camera to be working perfectly and had no explanation for what might have happened.

This is the second close encounter with true believers for Solana Productions. While shooting a Discovery Channel special in Utah we met a character who must hold the record for meeting Aliens. He claimed to have been abducted twice and visited several more times. Fortunately our gear survived this shoot intact.

Solana Productions, Inc. provides field crews for broadcast, cable and corporate productions. For more information please contact their Los Angeles and San Diego offices at 800-745-8225, or Seattle at 888-723-4100, or visit the website http://www.solanaproductions.com

Plot Points North Country (2005)

Plot points are linear links that make up the chain of traditional Aristotelian 3-act dramatic Structure. This classic Structure worked well in Hollywood for almost a century now. Although young movie makers are forcing the limits of this Structure, plot points still rule the day as the tent poles that hold up of the circus of our dreams. Here are the plot points of North Country (2005), as I see them.

North Country (2005)

Starring: Charlize Theron (Josey Aimes), Elle Peterson (Karen Aimes), Thomas Curtis (Sammy Aimes), Frances McDormand (Glory), Sean Bean (Kyle), Woody Harrelson (Bill White), Jeremy Renner (Bobby Sharp), Richard Jenkins (Hank Aimes), Sissy Spacek (Alice Aimes)
Directed by: Niki Caro
Writers: Michael Seitzman (Screenplay), Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy (book: Class Action)

PROTAGONIST JOSEY'S DILEMMA: Josey, a poor but good looking and young single mother, is trying to build a dignified life for herself in a North Minnesota mining town that wont allow that to happen.

PROTAGONIST'S DESIRE: To be a happy and self-sufficient adult.

HER CHIEF OBSTACLE: The sexist and aggressive male culture at the mine which accuses all female workers with stealing the jobs of male workers and wants to force them to quit through physical intimidation.

ESTABLISHING SHOT: A snowy Christmas day in a low-income house in cold Northern Minnesota.

INCITING INCIDENT: Josey gets beaten up bad by her ex husband.

PLOT POINT 1: Josey hits an ultimate low by dragging her son out of the car of a neighbor and creates an embarrassing public scene.

MID POINT EVENT: The attorney Bill White agrees to take on Joseys case an file a class-action suit against the company.

PLOT POINT 2: Hank Aimes, Joseys father, at long last stands up for her during a highly electrified union meeting where Josey is made the target of all kinds of sex jokes.

3rd ACT RESOLUTION: Led by the paraplegic Glory, all fem ale workers as well as some of the men stand up in the court as the additional witnesses needed to win the class-action suit. Josey wins the case and gets on with her life with her children.

The Devil's Rejects Not for the Squeamish

The Devils Rejects (2005)

Tagline: A Tale of Murder, Mayhem, and Revenge.

Sequels are a tricky proposition for most Filmmakers. Often, whatever magic existed in the first Film is lost by the time the second hits the screen. This is not the case with The Devils Rejects, a follow-up to the 2003 low-budget House of 1000 Corpses. Instead of simply regurgitating his first Film, director Rob Zombie (of White Zombie fame) takes the legend of the Firefly clan in a whole new direction, and, in the process, he turns out a Film which is actually superior to the original.

And in case you missed it, heres a quick summary of House of 1000 Corpses: Four teens stop off at the clown-faced Captain Spauldings gas station and museum of terror. They become fascinated with the local legend of Dr. Satan and set out to find the tree from which he was hung, but they quickly run afoul of the insane Firefly family. After that, its not a case of will they die, but rather how theyll die.

Rejects picks up sometime after the events in House, as an early morning raid on the Firefly family compound is led by a vengeful Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe), the brother of a law officer murdered in the first Film. In the ensuing shootout, Rufus Firefly (Tyler Mane) is killed and Mother Firefly (Leslie Easterbrook) is captured. Baby Firefly (Sheri Moon) and Otis Driftwood (Bill Moseley) escape and contact their father, Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig). As the trio cut a bloody swath across Texas, Sheriff Wydell becomes increasingly obsessed with their capture and resorts to more and more questionable methods. The Movie culminates in a shootout that is equal parts Thelma and Louise, The Wild Bunch, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, not to mention the fact that its all in slow-motion and set to Lynrd Skynrds Freebird.

The first Film was more of a monster Movie with the strange Dr. Satan and his hoard of traumatized Zombies, not to mention a n albino Otis, subterranean caverns, and satanic Halloween ceremonies. For the sequel, Zombie sets much of the Film in the light of day and transforms it into something closer resembling an on-the-road crime Movie. Think Natural Born Killers but with more madmen to choose from (and thats saying something). Dr. Satan is gone from the Film, and Otis is strangely no longer an albino. This time our killers are more sadist and less supernatural.

But dont think for a moment that this franchise has lost its bite. Its every bit as horrifying as the original, mainly due to the unsettling events which occur when Otis and Baby run across the members of the musical act Banjo and Sullivan at an out-of-the-way motel. If watching Threes Company vet Priscilla Barnes get raped with a pistol or Eastwood favorite Geoffrey Lewis get beaten to a bloody pulp doesnt bother you, then youre obviously made of sterner stuff than the majority of the American viewing audience. This is not a Film for the squeamish, as evidenced by the fact that many theaters simply refused to show the Movie. Of course, the fact that they managed to work in the F-word over 500 times in 100 minutes probably didnt help their cause either.

But fans of the genre will not be disappointed. From a killer soundtrack by such southern rock icons as Greg Allman and Lynrd Skynrd, to cameos by such notables as Michael Berryman, Ginger Lynn Allen, and Mary Woronov, Rejects has a lot to offer beyond gore and cursing. And Zombie continues to demonstrate a real eye for casting--getting excellent character actors instead of high-priced talent. In the hands of lesser actors, many of the roles would seem just plain absurd, but this cast is able make it work and even make us feel a degree of empathy in the process.

And thats Zombies most impressive accomplishment in Rejects--his ability to make us recoil in Horror at the deeds of the Firefly family one moment and then laugh along with them the next. There are several moments when you cant help but like the characters despite the Horrors that theyve inflicted on others. A few standout moments are an argument over ice cream between Otis, Baby, and Spaulding, and several scenes involving the trio hiding out at a brothel owned by Spauldings brother, Charlie Altamount (Ken Foree). It also helps that Bill Moseley and Sid Haig give excellent, nuanced performances. Sheri Moon also does an adequate job, although Zombie (her real-life husband) often spends more time getting close-ups of her attractive backside. One can only hope that this Movie leads to even bigger opportunities for this deserving threesome.

On the flipside, Sheriff Wydell goes from sympathetic to demonic and back again. While seeking revenge for his brothers death, he is driven to fight as dirty as the Firefly family, even going so far as to disembowel a prisoner, hire bounty hunters (wonderfully portrayed by Danny Trejo and Diamond Da llas Page), and torture his prisoners with a staple gun and hammer and nails. William Forsythe portrays Wydell as a star-wearing force of nature, and there are many similarities with Detective Scagnetti from Natural Born Killers. Both men slowly become what they pursue until it consumes them. But while Scagnetti could be playful one moment and lethal the next, Wydell is portrayed as constantly intense. The performance, while perfectly enjoyable, might have been a bit better if Forsythe had backed off from time to time. But thats just nit-picking on my part.

The one performance I didnt care for was Leslie Easterbrook as Mother Firefly. Karen Black portrayed the character in the first Film, but reportedly wanted more money for the sequel and was dropped (like shes got people beating down her door). In the hands of Black, Mother Firefly was a wily old hag who used her fading looks to ensnare men. Easterbrook gives her an outrageous southern accent and plays her as a screaming madwoman. Personally, I was overjoyed when she finally....(OOPS, dont want to give anything away).

I imagine weve seen the last of the Firefly clan, but Rob Zombie has certainly carved out a niche for himself in the Horror landscape. Whether he moves on to more commercially appealing projects or continues to make daring low-budget Films, audiences can be certain that his imagery and stories will stick with them long after they leave the theater.

And, in the end, what more could you ask for?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Season 5) DVD Review

The brainchild of writer Joss Whedon, Buffy The Vampire Slayer originally entered American pop culture as a full-length feature film, starring Kristy Swanson, in 1992. But creator Whedon felt that the project never quite did justice to the full scope of his vision, so he managed turn the film into a television series in 1997. The result of Whedon's increased artistic freedom is a series that has enjoyed both critical acclaim and audience notoriety. Nominated for 14 Emmy's during its seven year run, the show managed to win only two (both in 1998 for Outstanding Makeup and Outstanding Music Composition in a television series). Yet, the true success for Buffy The Vampire Slayer is indicated by the massive success of the show's long run, strong DVD sales, and the overwhelming success of the series spin-off Angel

Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the title role of Buffy Anne Summers, a teenage girl who stands alone among her generation as the chosen one able to stand against va mpires, demons, and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer But Buffy is not alone in fulfilling her destiny as a slayer of vampires. She also receives help from the high school librarian, Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), who is a Watcher - the one chosen to train and guide slayers on their developmental path. In addition, new friends Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan - of American Pie fame) and Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon) quickly uncover the truth of Buffy's destiny, and they often aid her in defending the world against evil forces

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Season 5) DVD offers a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere Buffy vs. Dracula in which Giles decides to leave Sunnydale believing that Buffy no longer needs him. But when Buffy runs into a vampire who claims to be Dracula (and he exhibits powers far beyond the scope of most vampires), she and Xander are forced to work together to slay him. In so doing, Dracula reveals that Buffy' s powers derive from a source of evil, thus stoking the curiosity of Buffy who enlists Giles' help in studying the nature of the Slayer (as a result, he stays in Sunnydale) Other notable episodes from Season 5 include The Replacement in which a demon's spell splits Xander into two versions of himself (one with all his positive attributes, one with all of his negative), and Triangle in which Willow and Anya accidentally conjure a troll which runs around Sunnydale leaving a path of destruction in its wake

Good Date Movie Review: The Devil Wears Prada Starring Ann Hathaway and Meryl Streep

As far as good date Movies go, most tend to lean towards the romantic comedy genre, and some (not most) may appeal to men as well. The Devil Wears Prada is one of them simply for the sake of the vivacious Ann Hathaway in a myriad of fashionable outfits that accent her natural beauty and versatility.

There is good entertainment value in The Devil Wears Prada for both guys and girls so it fits for a good date Movie quite well. The guys will just love the leggy models in many scenes not to mention Hathaway herself who surely steals scenes with hair and makeup glamour as well as some fabulous outfits that accent her great physique. So ther e will be enough to keep the men interested and alert through the Movie if just for visuals themselves.

The Devil Wears Prada is based on the best selling novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, based on her personal experience at Vogue. A young aspiring journalist lands a job in a fashion magazine as an assistant, fully expecting to use the position as a stepping stone to a journalists job with another publication. Besides, we all have to pay the bills. Andy Sachs, the young student in question gets the job, but soon finds out that she has no style and works for a wildly eccentric and demanding boss named Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep.

Andy (Andrea) Sachs becomes slowly adjusted to the fast pace of the New York City fashion magazine with the help of one of the head designers Nigel , played convincingly by Stanley Tucci. He designs a whole new wardrobe for Andy and sends her to the company hair and makeup departments only to emerge as a striking brunette compared to the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and Natalie Woods.

As the new Andy starts to excel at her position while making new connections in the industry, her personal life starts to break down causing hardship in her relationship with friends, boyfriend, and parents. At times, what may seem like insensitivity on her part is developed on screen so the viewer actually has more sympathy with what she is doing and trying to accomplish, essentially creating some inner debate as to which side is right or not.

You cant go wrong with this line up. Combine acting talent with an amusing and visually delightful array of models, clothing and New York City hustle and you have a good date Movie worth 3 hearts.

Reality TV American Idol

Not everybody is into reality TV. It's understandable. Many of the shows are just plain stupid. But for pure entertainment value, it is hard to argue that American Idol is not the cream of the crop. This show doesn't seem to lose steam, even after five seasons. If you think that's not accurate, you might like to know that more people voted in the American Idol finals this past year than in any presidential election, ever. Of course that's a sad commentary on our political and social system, but nonetheless, those are the facts.

So why is American Idol so popular? Is it that good? Are the singers that good? Is the concept itself so interesting and unique? Is there just nothing else on worth watching Tuesday and Wednesday nights? Do we love to hate Simon? Do we love to love Ryan? Or do we just love rooting for the underdog? While we may not really know the answers to any of these questions, it would be interesting to at least explore just what it is that makes American Idol such a big hit with young and old alike.

There's no doubt that there is a certain amount of suspense with American Idol, wondering who's going to get booted off the show each week. And for those who think that the losers are predictable, one only need to go back to the episode where Chris, who every one thought was going to be the new American Idol, got booted off the show. The look on his face when he got the news may have been the photographic moment of the year. So there is definitely a bit of uncertainty with this show.

What about the talent? Is any of it really that good? Is there anybody really worth caring about? Well, probably one of the greatest singers of today came out of this show. If you never had the pleasure to hear Clay Aiken sing, you have no idea what you're missing. And he wasn't even the winner that year, the award going to Rueben Stoddard in what was probably one of the most controversial Idol votes in the whole hi story of the show itself. The ratings for that last show were through the roof.

And yes, there is always rooting for the underdog. Did anyone really think that a prematurely gray haired guy by the name of Taylor Hicks could have come away with this year's title? He may have not had the greatest voice of all the contestants, but you couldn't ask for more of a showman. Yes, he was the dark horse contestant and yet, he won it all.

And then there are Simon, Paula and Randy. You can call them the 3 Musketeers or the 3 Stooges, but they are certainly entertaining. Yes, Simon is the one everyone watches to see and hear and he's going to say next to insult somebody. Heaven knows why we love that stuff. Thank goodness we have Ryan to keep the three of them in line.

Whatever the reason for American Idol's success, one thing can't be disputed. This is a show that may very well be around long after many of the careers they've spawned are dead and buried.

Entertainment Johnny Carson

Johnny Carson was a form of Entertainment all himself. When he retired and was replaced by Jay Leno, an era of television ended. When he died, an era of mankind died with him. There was never anything like Johnny Carson before him and most likely there will never be another Johnny Carson again.

Carson hosted The Tonight Show which had a long line of hosts before him, including Steve Allen, Ernie Kovacs and Jack Paar, the last regular host who Carson ultimately replaced. After he died, Carson then went on to host the show for almost 30 years, a feat that has been equalled by nobody else.

Carson's sidekick on the show was a guy by the name of Ed McMahon. McMahon was really there just to play off Carson and be his straight man. He didn't really have much talent, but he didn't have to. He played his role perfectly and the two of them formed a chemistry that rivalled the great duos of all time.

The premise of the show was very simple and pretty much set in stone. At the beginning of each show McMahon would introduce who the guests would be for that evening after announcing the star of the show and then would come out with the now famous line, Here's Johnny! Carson would then come out and do a brief monologue. In his monologue he would basically cover the current events of the day, mostly picking on the sitting President of the United States. Most would say that his monologue was the funniest part of the show.

After the monologue, the show would take a commercial break and upon return Johnny would be seated behind his desk. The rest of the show would focus mostly on bringing on the various guests. This was a chance for up and coming stars to shine. Getting onto the show was almost a free ride to success if you were good. Many gre at stars got their start on Carson's showcase. Who could forget the first time that George Carlin first appeared on the show?

After the guests would perform, they'd sit down with Carson and chat. Some of the guests, like Carlin and Robin Williams, were outrageous and provided some of the most memorable moments on the show. Carson was a master at interviewing people as he made them feel so at ease.

But the show wasn't just about guests. Carson also had his cast of characters whom he played on the show, like Karnac the Magnificent. This is where Carson would put on his little turban and pretend to be able to guess what the contents of individual envelopes were. Whenever McMahon would get to the last envelope he would announce this, bringing on great cheers from the studio audience, as the jokes were really pretty bad. To these cheers, Carson would make some kind of remark like, May the fleas from a thousand camels infest your arm pits. The laughs were some o f the greatest on television.

Carson filled our homes with some of the greatest TV moments ever. And for that we will always be thankful.

CSI: NY Back to the Big Apple

Easily the darkest, most hard-bitten member of the CSI family, CSI:NY returns this fall for a third season: a season that opens following the violent murder of a former CSI, with another recovering from a coma.

We left the second season of CSI in turmoil. In the penultimate episode of the season, Heroes, the charred remains of former CSI Aiden Burn were discovered in a stolen car. While the identity of the murderer seemed obvious to Detective Mac Taylor and his team, they had to find to establish enough evidence to bring in JD Pratt, the unconvicted rapist whose case cost Aiden her job six months earlier.

Since leaving the department, Aiden had devoted herself to gathering evidence to finally put Pratt behind bars, and her final act did just that. Realising she would be killed, Aiden left enough evidence to pin the murder on Pratt, knowing that the CSIs would be able to use it to finish the job she promised to do.

The final episode finished the season w ith a bang. While surveying a murder scene in a multi-storey office building with Mac Taylor, Detective Flack finds a duffel bag containing a bomb. During the evacuation of the building the bomb is triggered and Mac, Flack and another man are caught in the blast. While the three survive, Flack is badly injured. After performing life-saving first aid, Mac safely gets Detective Flack out of the collapsed building - but he slips into a coma.

It emerges that the bomber is an unmedicated schizophrenic who believes that he is performing a public service to his country, warning them that they are not prepared for possible terrorist attacks. The bomber's cellphone is tracked to the library of Chelsea University, where a second device is discovered and disarmed.

With a warning that a third bomb will be detonated within the hour, Mac is struggling against the clock to track down the bomber when he realises that the culprit is OHS Tech Specialist Dean Lessing, a man wh o appeared on the scene of the first explosion. Mac tracks him to the Goodmanson Theatre, the location of the third bomb, where Lessing takes Bomb Tech Crew leader Agent Fielding hostage. It's only when Mac, knowing that the mentally ill Lessing wants nothing more than to serve as a US Marine, barks an order for him to secure his weapon that Lessing complies, giving himself up.

The season closes on the image of Flack lying unconscious in his hospital bed, surrounded by his friends and colleagues.

CSI: NY - Third Season

Details of the third season are being kept tightly under wraps by CBS. However, we do know that the CSIs will be joined by one or two famous faces throughout the season. Clare Forlani (Meet Joe Black, Mystery Men) will be joining the team as the new medical examiner, Dr Peyton Driscoll. Driscoll is believed to be playing the part of Mac Taylor's new love interest in the show. Also appearing will be Emmanuelle Vaugier (Two and a Half Me n) as CSI detective Jennifer Angell, and Edward Furlong (Terminator 2, American History X) in his first TV role.

CSI:NY has consistently come third in viewer figures behind CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and its spectacularly popular spin-off, CSI: Miami. So what does the future hold for the New York story? Will this third season see the black sheep of the family triumph? Well, we'll have to wait and see.
