Munich (2005) is a story that pleased no one. Both the Jews and the Palestinians criticized it for not doing justice to their own cause. But in his thankless mission, Spielberg came as close to adopting an objective point of view as humanly and artistically possible by showing the pros and cons of all arguments, and above all, the futility and madness of premeditated murder for both sides. Here are the main plot points:
Starring: Eric Bana (Avner), Daniel Craig (Steve), Ciarn Hinds (Carl), Mathieu Kassovitz (Robert), Hanns Zischler (Hans), Ayelet Zurer (Daphna), Geoffrey Rush (Ephraim), Gila Almagor (Avner's Mother) Directed by: Steven Spielberg Writers: Tony Kushner and Eric Roth (Screenplay)
PROTAGONIST AVNER'S INITIAL DILEMMA: He wants to live in peace with his pregnant wife but he is the son of a national military and hero and no lesser a figure than the Israeli PM Golda Meir asks him to volunteer for a very dangerous mission to kill all of the 11 Black September terrorists that assassinated the Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics .
PROTAGONIST AVNER'S FINAL DILEMMA: All the Black September terrorists Avner and his crew killed are replaced by new ones. There is also the issue of losing the sense of righteousness that is supposed to be central to the Jewish faith. So what difference does assassinating the assassins make? But then is that perhaps the only way for the Jewish nation to survive?
PROTAGONIST'S DESIRE: To live in peace with his family.
HIS CHIEF OBSTACLE: He is given an assignment by the top leadership of Israel that as the son of a military hero and a trained Mossad agent he cannot refuse.
ESTABLISHING SHOT: Black September guerillas scaling over the security railing at the 1972 Munich Olympics village.
INCITING INCIDENT: Ambushing of the Israeli athletes at their dorm house.
PLOT POINT 1: Avner agrees to go to Europe with his team and kill all the 11 Black September members who took part in the 1972 event.
MID POINT EVENT: Avner finds Carl naked and dead in his bed, killed by the hooker both had met at the bar of the hotel they are staying.
PLOT POINT 2: The French group which provides Avner with the name of the Black September members for a huge amount of cash also provide him with the proof that he himself is now being hunted as well. Avner has a sickening sense that the French informers work for the Palestinians and perhaps for the CIA and Mossad as well to double up the cash.
3rd ACT RESOLUTION: None really. Avner has his wife and new born daughter move to Brooklyn for safety reasons, His last meeting at a desolate Brooklyn park with Mossad Chief Ephraim fails to bring any resolution to his new life filled with self-doubt and paranoia.
