Dancing With The Stars: Season 3 Episode 2

Last night on ABC's Dancing with the Stars, Edyta Sliwinska and Joey Lawrence delivered the best performance of the night. Light on his feet and graceful, Joey is a natural dancer. His childhood tap dancing experience has helped him tremendously, particularly in the quickstep where being light, swift and spritely on one's feet is key.

Karina Smirnoff and Mario Lopez were my second favorite couple of the evening. Like Joey, Mario benefits in the quickstep from being smooth and light on his feet. It is clear to any trained dancer's eye that he, too, has had childhood dance experience. A true adult non-dancer, no matter how naturally talented he or she may be, does not have the same leg extensions, grace, speed, turn out, flexilibility and clean lines that Mario has. He may not have had formal training, but honestly, from my perspective and personal experience as a dancer, any kind of dance experience early on in life helps, whether it is tap, break dancing or even gymn astics.

What a pity Karina and Mario did not stick to the dance's standards and remain in closed position longer for the quickstep. Unlike foxtrot or waltz, quickstep is strictly an International Style dance; in competition, the couples do not open up and separate as they do in American Style Smooth. Furthermore, spicing up their dance number with Latin flavor hurt them in the end. Quickstep is supposed to be glamorous, elegant and lively, not hot and sexy. I still love them, though; they're always a pleasure to watch.

Other than Louis van Amstel and Monique Coleman who burned up the dance floor with their fantastic mambo choreography and their newly sizzling chemistry, the other couples failed to impress me. Vivica A. Fox, Shanna Moakler and Sara Evans appeared heavy and sluggish next to the energy-filled hip action and nimble footwork of their respective professional partners.

Jerry Springer was his usual awkward and slow self - the man himself is convinc ed he won't make it far and I don't blame him. As far as Emitt Smith goes, I can't see what the hype was all about. Despite of the infusion of pizzazz into the open work, his actual quickstep (in closed position) looked chunky and lacked dynamism.

Who should go this week? Jerry. Give the old man some rest.

Who's likely to end up going? Shanna. Former beauty queen is a total bore.
