Is Tom Cruise the Victim of Celebrity Blackballing?

OK, granted Tom Cruise isn't really TwentySomething, but he's dating Katie Holmes and I want to write this article, so let's take the stretch. Despite claims made to the contrary by the star's business partner, Paula Wagner, the word is that Cruise got canned for his recently outlandish conduct. Tom had a Rick James moment on Oprah's couch, as he professed his love for the lovely and much younger Holmes last year. But, while this and many other Cruise moments admittedly seem out of character, strange behavior has never been an entertainment taboo. So, why is Paramount parting with 'Ethan Hawk,' its biggest money maker?

Despite opening at almost $48 million Mission Impossible III was ultimately not as profitable as Paramount would have liked. While many cite Cruise's behavior as the reason, I'd say it was the anticlimactic, disappointing ending drafted for War of the Worlds. I guess anything sounds better with Morgan Freeman narrating but, come on- the aliens catch a cold? Cruise undoubtedly made enemies in Hollywood when his profession of faith in Scientology led him to publicly shun the use of psychiatrics; with it stars like Brooke Shields and probably half the Hollywood Hills who use drugs to treat emotional or psychological problems. Also some people probably don't know what to make of his public appearance on BET doing a popular hip hop dance.

Cruise's comments have likely left many in the entertainment industry offended and Paramount seems to be threatened by Tom's unapologetically open and overjoyed antics as of late, but there is nothing, so far, to suggest that Cruise is any weirder than other celebrities. Stars with levels of success like Cruise are entitled to their little eccentricities; practicing an obscure Religion and having a crazy in l ove relationship hardly seems to warrant concern.
