Three's Company (Season 4) DVD Review

Bursting onto the television landscape in Spring 1977, Three's Company quickly skyrocketed in the ratings - cracking the top 8 every season except its last. Sporting a plethora of quirky characters and fresh writing talent that explored modern day issues, the show held its own as one of the funniest programs on TV. Picking up where All In The Family left off, Three's Company delved into the social taboos of its day, dealing with subjects such as homosexuality, racism, sexual harassment, and of course, unmarried men and women living together But the true success of Three's Company stemmed from the comic talents of John Ritter and Suzanne Somers who became instant stars as a result of their respective roles on the show

In Three's Company, John Ritter plays the role of Jack Tripper, a young cooking student in San Diego who wants to move into an apartment with his two female friends - the far more mature Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt) and the blonde and ditsy Chrissy Snow (Su zanne Somers). But the three friends face the possible wrath of landlord Stanley Roper (Norman Fell), an old-fashioned guy who would never allow such an arrangement. With the aid of Roper's wife Helen (Audra Lindley), the three manage to convince Stanley that Jack is gay (when he is, in fact, a notorious ladies man). Jack's friend Larry (Richard Kline) also fashions himself a player on the local singles scene, and he makes regular appearances on the show. Following Season 3, Stanley and Helen left the show in pursuit of their own spin-off titled The Ropers. Don Knotts (of Andy Griffith Show fame) was brought in to play the new landlord, Mr. Furley - a nave, loud-mouthed ditz who tripled the hilarity of every scene in which he appeared

The Three's Company (Season 4) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere Jack on the Lam in which the FBI, in the process of doing a background check on one of Jack's old navy buddies, interviews Jack. Jack mistakes the interview for a government conspiracy to get him. Meanwhile, Mr. Furley has yet to appear even though Don Knotts is credited in the opening scenes Other notable episodes from Season 4 include The New Landlord in which Larry, Jack, Janet, and Chrissy meet their new landlord, Mr. Furley, (after selling off his furniture, having believed the Ropers left it behind for the trash man), and A Camping We Will Go in which Larry tells his actress girlfriend that Jack is a famous commercial producer

An Appreciation of Fawlty Towers

Fawlty towers has often been voted the most popular sitcom. Its appeal is timeless and spreads across the spectrum. Only 12 episodes were ever made, the producers wished to put as much energy as they could into making each episode as good as they could.

At the heart of all Fawlty Towers episodes is Basil Fawlty. Basil superbly played by John Cleese brings out the best in the other characters and brings a touch of craziness and at times insanity.

Basil Fawlty is at once both a clown with capacity for self destruction but also comes across as a rather pompous figure who aspires to higher society. It is this paradox in his nature that makes his incompetence even more Funny. A classic example is the episode in which he is taken in by a confidence trickster who pretends to be a Lord. Basil responds by fawning almost embarrassingly on this Lord Inevitably the Lord is revealed as a fraud, much to the complete rage of Basil. Basil Fawltys relationship with his wife Sy bil plays upto many stereotypes of painful marriages. The relationship is always taut with constant friction between the two, being a constant source of humour. At times we can start to feel sympathy for Basil at other times we feel sympathy for Sybil.

With Manuel on the other hand Basil is definitely the boss. But he is constantly exasperated by Manuels failure to comprehend the instructions of his boss. Manuels favourite phrase Que? becomes a repeated joke. Made particularly Funny by the exaggerated frustration as to how Basil always responds.

Whilst there are these recurring relationships throughout the series, each episode provides a new character for Basil to create problems. The episode with Mrs Richards is a good example of Basils difficulty with dealing with awkward customers. At the same time Mrs Richards is a real handful. The characters are so strong that it becomes easy to create a Funny episode. The series does not rely on jokes so much as peoples re actions and interactions. Another episode where Basil disastrously deals with his own customers is epitomised in Waldorf Salad Here visiting American tourists request a late dinner and pay Basil to stay open late. Rather than pay the chef he pockets the 5 but then is completely unable to make a simple Waldorf Salad. There is something in the character of Basil Fawlty which makes him incapable of apologising or admitting he is wrong. Rather than take an easy way out he will create an elaborate tale of explanation. Yet no matter how elaborate it usually fails. And in the Waldorf Salad Basil gets his comeuppance from the aggrieved American who then reduces Basil Fawlty to a whimpering wreck.

The West Wing (DVD) Review

Premiering in September 1999, the original NBC series The West Wing built an instant cult following with its seemingly realistic weekly excursions into the inner sanctums of the White House. The series became such a hit that some pollsters claimed that certain people actually believed Jed Bartlet was the real president (although, if true, this is more of a negative reflection on the intelligence of the electorate, and not necessarily an indication of West Wing's realism). But regardless, the truth of the matter is that West Wing definitely strikes a chord with certain audiences, providing entertaining brew of action, suspense, and drama on a weekly basis

Seasoned Hollywood actor Martin Sheen plays the lead role of President Jed Bartlet. The day-to-day affairs of Bartlet's administration are run by a number of individuals who surround him, among them are: Claudia C.J. Cregg (Allison Janney), Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Leo McGarry (John Spencer), and Charlie Young (Dule Hill). West Wing follows these dedicated staffers as they work extended hours behind-the-scenes to help keep the White House running smoothly. Along the way, the stress of the job and the characters' personal lives make for an interesting glimpse into what many believe is an accurate portrayal of a real-life White House administration

The West Wing DVD offers a number of dramatic episodes including the series premiere in which we meet each of the recurring characters for the first time. The White House has their daily routine interrupted when President Bartlet falls off his bike, and Sam realizes the girl he picked in a bar the previous evening was a high-priced prostitute. Meanwhile, several members of the administration become embroiled in an ongoing feud with the religious right, prompting President Bartlet to personally condemn a group of fundamentalists known as The Lambs of God Other notable episodes fr om Season 1 include The Crackpots and These Women in which administration staffers spend their day listening to a number of crackpot, single-issue groups lobbying for federal favors, and Take This Sabbath Day in which President Bartlet grapples with the decision to commute the death sentence of a convicted killer following a Supreme Court ruling upholding his sentence

Cheers (Season 3) DVD Review

One of the greatest television comedies in history, Cheers is an absolute must see for anyone who's ever had a regular hangout where everybody knows your name. The shows centers itself around the friendly neighborhood Boston bar named Cheers. The bar is owned by former Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Sam Malone (Ted Danson). Sam has three employees - bartender Ernie Coach Pantusso (Nicholas Colasanto) and waitresses Carla Tortelli (Rhea Pearlman) and Diane Chambers (Shelley Long). Season 3 witnesses the edition of popular cast member Kelsey Grammar as Dr. Frasier Crane (who would later spawn his own series spin-off, Frasier). Regular barflies Norm Peterson (George Wendt) and Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger) round out a strong supporting cast.

The Cheers (Season 3) DVD offers a number of hilarious episodes and begins the ascent of Dr. Frasier Crane, imminent psychologist, as a television icon. Notably, Dr. Crane's stint on Cheers was originally intended to last for only a few episodes until his character became a regular cast member (similar to John Ratzenberger's ascent on the show). Michael Richards (Kramer from the hit show Seinfeld) makes a notable guest appearance in episode # 62. Following her breakup with Sam and abandonment of Cheers, Diane returns to the bar at the request of Coach who feels it will help Sam end his problem drinking. The Sam-Diane-Frasier love triangle lasts for the entirety of the season, culminating in the final episode where Frasier proposes to Diane while the two are on a trip across the European continent

Unbreakable (Movie Review)

One of the best thrillers of 2000, Unbreakable is writer/director M. Knight Shyamalan's follow up production to the 1998 blockbuster The Sixth Sense. Although not as phenomenally successful as that film, Unbreakable is nonetheless a memorable and suspense ridden picture certain to entertain. Shyamalan uses a unique comic book format to weave a tale of a superhero who fails to realize his own powers. But audiences won't confuse Unbreakable with Spiderman or Superman. The film isn't as one-dimensional with its characters, and the employment of special effects is not a focal point of the film. Instead, Unbreakable remains more of a mystery, thriller combination, and one that works well

Security Guard David Dunn (Bruce Willis) makes headlines as the sole survivor of a massive train wreck which kills 130+ passengers. But not only does David survive the wreck, he emerges from the wreckage without a single scratch. Soon after, David is approached by Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), owner of a comic book art gallery and expert on the world of comics. Elijah suffers from a genetic disease which causes his bones to be extremely brittle. Confined in his home, Elijah's mother bought him comic books throughout his youth. Believing the comics to be a modern form of ancient storytelling describing the lives of real people of super-human abilities, Elijah postulates that David is one such person.

The fanatical comic book lover produces evidence of David's survival of a car wreck twenty years earlier, his survival on the train, and his injury-free days as a star football player. As the polar-opposite of David, Elijah has been in search of such a person for his entire life. Now, he must convince David that he holds the aforementioned powers. As David comes to believe he holds the power of the 'unbreakable', he also develops an awareness of a special sense which gives him the ability to tell if someone has done, or is about to do, something siniste r. As David comes to appreciate his special powers, the world around him crystallizes with a terrifying clarity

Featuring one of the better surprise endings of the decade, Unbreakable is one of the reasons Shyamalan's reputation has risen to such a lofty position in the world of film. Well-written and well-directed, M. Knight Shyamalan creates a brilliant follow up to The Sixth Sense with the dark and mysterious Unbreakable. Samuel L. Jackson plays his part well, employing the use of his penetrating stare and authoritative voice for maximum effect. Bruce Willis stars again in a role he knows well - that of the hero.

Although it lacked the commercial success and Academy Award speculation of its forerunner, Unbreakable is nevertheless an entertaining film. Weaving a strange and exotic tale of two men who lead opposite lives in the physical realm, it makes deft use of cinematography and dripping suspense to leave its audience perched on the edge of curiosity. As a r esult, Unbreakable made a place for itself among the best films of 2000, and it definitely ranks as a must-see film

Silk Stalkings (DVD) Review

Nominated for only one Emmy, the entertainment quality of Silk Stalkings is nevertheless evidenced by its nine season run which is one of the most enduring ever for an original cable TV series. Partly responsible for this lack of critical acclaim is that Silk Stalkings was a trailblazer in the cable genre, and handing out Emmys to original cable series didn't become fashionable until the late-1990s when Sex And The City and The Sopranos broke the cable barrier for good. Another contributing factor to the lack of peer recognition is that Silk Stalkings lasted about four seasons longer than it should have, given that nearly the entire cast and crew were replaced after the first five seasons. Regardless, this hour-long drama series set in Palm Beach, Florida contains all the necessary ingredients for a hit show - beautiful people in a beautiful setting with lots of murder, violence, and intrigue. Silk Stalkings offers everything one could ask for in a TV drama, and the show's success helped pave the way for additional original cable series such as Monk and The Shield

Silk Stalkings follows the exploits of two Palm Beach, Florida detectives who investigate murders and other high profile crimes in an elite community which is no stranger to fame and fortune. Sgt. Chris Lorenzo (Rob Estes) and Sgt. Rita Lee Lance (Mitzi Kapture) are partners on the local Palm Beach Police Department, and each episode they must investigate one or more high-profile crimes. The dynamic relationship between Chris and Rita is a focal point of the show, and the two will overturn every stone and use every tactic at their disposal to bring justice to those who, either due to fame and/or wealth, believe they are above the laws that governor average people Veteran entertainer Ben Vereen plays their boss, Capt. Hutchinson, in seasons one through three before being replaced by Charlie Brill (Capt. Harry Lipschitz) for the remainder of the series Overall, Silk Stalkings is a finely scripted investigative drama cut from the same mold as Law & Order SVU

The Silk Stalkings DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the series premiere in which Chris and Rita investigate the case of model murdered in her townhouse. The main focus of the investigation centers around the model's husband, and the couple's impending divorce proceedings only serve to place him under greater suspicion. Digging further, Chris and Rita link a cold case file to the murder, but a wrench is thrown in their investigation when the ex-cop who investigated the case is himself murdered Other notable episodes from Season 1 include Dirty Laundry in which Chris and Rita investigate the mysterious death of a congressmen found on the beach near his home, and Internal Affair in which Chris becomes embroiled in police brutality controversy when he shoots and kills a suspect during a burglary in progress

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Season 2) DVD Review

Nominated for 28 Emmys, including several for Outstanding Visual Effects, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine continues the rich tradition of the original 1960s Star Trek franchise. Created by former L.A. police officer Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek TV series morphed into a franchise famous for the unprecedented fanatical devotion of its audience. Lasting only three seasons during its original network run, Star Trek struck gold with its syndicated reruns, launching a number of motion pictures featuring the original cast as well as novels, comic books, collectibles, and reams of Star Trek-related memorabilia. Following on the heels of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), the first Star Trek series spin-off of the original, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine foreshadowed additional spin-offs - Star Trek: Voyager (1995), and Star Trek: Enterprise (2001). Sporting an entirely new cast and crew from its two predecessors, the show focuses on a particular system administered by the Federatio n instead of the usual Star Trek mission of exploring strange new worlds

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine follows the exploits of the Starfleet crew aboard an abandoned and gutted Cardassian space station orbiting the planet of Bajor. In the aftermath of Cardassian occupation, the Bajorian government invited the Starfleet to oversee the reconstruction of the space station. Deep Space Nine quickly transformed into a teeming city of commerce and a hub for travel (similar to Babylon 5) thanks to the discovery of an unknown wormhole nearby. But the wormhole leads to the Gamma Quadrant, realm of the feared Dominion alliance, which views the wormhole travelers as a threat to its totalitarian grip on power. As such, the Dominion launches an attack against the Federation and its Klingon allies. The subsequent and ongoing war is the basis for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Capt. Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) is credited with discovering the wormhole, and he oversees the crew of Dee p Space Nine as they wage battle to preserve the Federation. Ironically, his colleague, Constable Odo (Rene Auberjonois), is a Changeling - an alien race of shapeshifters who lead the Dominion's united front. Together with the rest of the crew aboard Deep Space Nine, they struggle with internal and external conflicts that threaten to destroy their very way of life

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Season 2) DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere The Homecoming in which, in an attempt to bring peace to the warring factions of the Bajorian people, Miles and Kira make a bold attempt to rescue a revered Bajorian resistance figure from a Cardassian slave labor camp Other notable episodes from Season 2 include Second Sight in which Ben falls in love for the first time since his wife passed away, and The Wire in which Dr. Bashir attempts to cure Garak of a strange affliction
