Silk Stalkings (DVD) Review

Nominated for only one Emmy, the entertainment quality of Silk Stalkings is nevertheless evidenced by its nine season run which is one of the most enduring ever for an original cable TV series. Partly responsible for this lack of critical acclaim is that Silk Stalkings was a trailblazer in the cable genre, and handing out Emmys to original cable series didn't become fashionable until the late-1990s when Sex And The City and The Sopranos broke the cable barrier for good. Another contributing factor to the lack of peer recognition is that Silk Stalkings lasted about four seasons longer than it should have, given that nearly the entire cast and crew were replaced after the first five seasons. Regardless, this hour-long drama series set in Palm Beach, Florida contains all the necessary ingredients for a hit show - beautiful people in a beautiful setting with lots of murder, violence, and intrigue. Silk Stalkings offers everything one could ask for in a TV drama, and the show's success helped pave the way for additional original cable series such as Monk and The Shield

Silk Stalkings follows the exploits of two Palm Beach, Florida detectives who investigate murders and other high profile crimes in an elite community which is no stranger to fame and fortune. Sgt. Chris Lorenzo (Rob Estes) and Sgt. Rita Lee Lance (Mitzi Kapture) are partners on the local Palm Beach Police Department, and each episode they must investigate one or more high-profile crimes. The dynamic relationship between Chris and Rita is a focal point of the show, and the two will overturn every stone and use every tactic at their disposal to bring justice to those who, either due to fame and/or wealth, believe they are above the laws that governor average people Veteran entertainer Ben Vereen plays their boss, Capt. Hutchinson, in seasons one through three before being replaced by Charlie Brill (Capt. Harry Lipschitz) for the remainder of the series Overall, Silk Stalkings is a finely scripted investigative drama cut from the same mold as Law & Order SVU

The Silk Stalkings DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the series premiere in which Chris and Rita investigate the case of model murdered in her townhouse. The main focus of the investigation centers around the model's husband, and the couple's impending divorce proceedings only serve to place him under greater suspicion. Digging further, Chris and Rita link a cold case file to the murder, but a wrench is thrown in their investigation when the ex-cop who investigated the case is himself murdered Other notable episodes from Season 1 include Dirty Laundry in which Chris and Rita investigate the mysterious death of a congressmen found on the beach near his home, and Internal Affair in which Chris becomes embroiled in police brutality controversy when he shoots and kills a suspect during a burglary in progress

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Season 2) DVD Review

Nominated for 28 Emmys, including several for Outstanding Visual Effects, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine continues the rich tradition of the original 1960s Star Trek franchise. Created by former L.A. police officer Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek TV series morphed into a franchise famous for the unprecedented fanatical devotion of its audience. Lasting only three seasons during its original network run, Star Trek struck gold with its syndicated reruns, launching a number of motion pictures featuring the original cast as well as novels, comic books, collectibles, and reams of Star Trek-related memorabilia. Following on the heels of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), the first Star Trek series spin-off of the original, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine foreshadowed additional spin-offs - Star Trek: Voyager (1995), and Star Trek: Enterprise (2001). Sporting an entirely new cast and crew from its two predecessors, the show focuses on a particular system administered by the Federatio n instead of the usual Star Trek mission of exploring strange new worlds

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine follows the exploits of the Starfleet crew aboard an abandoned and gutted Cardassian space station orbiting the planet of Bajor. In the aftermath of Cardassian occupation, the Bajorian government invited the Starfleet to oversee the reconstruction of the space station. Deep Space Nine quickly transformed into a teeming city of commerce and a hub for travel (similar to Babylon 5) thanks to the discovery of an unknown wormhole nearby. But the wormhole leads to the Gamma Quadrant, realm of the feared Dominion alliance, which views the wormhole travelers as a threat to its totalitarian grip on power. As such, the Dominion launches an attack against the Federation and its Klingon allies. The subsequent and ongoing war is the basis for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Capt. Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) is credited with discovering the wormhole, and he oversees the crew of Dee p Space Nine as they wage battle to preserve the Federation. Ironically, his colleague, Constable Odo (Rene Auberjonois), is a Changeling - an alien race of shapeshifters who lead the Dominion's united front. Together with the rest of the crew aboard Deep Space Nine, they struggle with internal and external conflicts that threaten to destroy their very way of life

I Love Lucy (Season 2) DVD Review

Widely considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, show in television history, I Love Lucy signaled the ascendance of the prime time TV era. New Friday The 13th Film Friday the 13th The Legend

So the back and forth continues like a Maria Sharapova/Venus Williams tennis match (Yes these are the only womens tennis players I know of). We've learned today from arrow in the head that the new upcoming Friday the 13th film will officially be titled Friday the 13th The Legend. The film also will not be a prequel to or a remake of Friday the 13th, but rather will fit somewhere in the timeline between Friday the 13th:Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason Goes To Hell:The Final Friday. The scooper who informed AITH of this also gave them some more juicy bits about the upcoming new Jason movie. Read on below for more.

A Scooper tells AITH...

This past weekend, screenwriter Mark Wheaton turned in a ninety-six page draft regarding his plans for the newly announced Friday the 13th re-imagining. After spending much of my Saturday afternoon Xeroxing copies for studio heads (including producer Brad Fuller and the now-directing John Liebesman), I was able to take an hour bre ak and skim through Jason's newest slay-fest. Each day I'll give you a taste of some of the more interesting sequences of the script, starting with the opening.

FIRST OFF: There is not a single reference to JASON X or FREDDY VS. JASON to be found within the story. Although the exact date for the sequence of events that are occurring is never mentioned, the film takes place somewhere between the events of JASON TAKES MANHATTAN and JASON GOES TO HELL.

This film, titled Friday the 13th: The Legend, opens in the style of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter with a group of just arrived Crystal Lake camp counselors sharing tales of the infamous Jason Voorhees among a campfire. I'm interested to see how this will play out, because they make reference to several of the more stand-out kills of the first eight films (i.e. sleeping bag pounding, wheelchair victim, cracking of the Sheriff in pt. 6) as wells as some of the deaths that Jason endured (particularly the butchering in pt. 4's finale).

It sounds like New Line just wanted to do a back to basics, balls to the wall, new Jason flick set at Camp Crystal Lake. It also sounds like they are fully aware of how bad Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason Goes to Hell were and this might be some sort of attempt to make up for both movies. Either way, Friday the 13th:The Legend is expected out in 2007.

Where Have All The Greats Gone?

Where have characters like steely faced Humphrey Bogart standing in the doorway with a cigarette in one hand and a revolver in the other gone? Where has the likes of John Wayne, Gary Cooper, James Cagney, and Robert Mitchum gone? The fact is that these actors are no longer in the land of the living, but they had such character and screen power. The women of the era were also tough cookies themselves, such as Betty Davis, Audrey Hepburn, and Lauren Becall. These women had moxie and a sexiness that jumped out through the screen.

Todays actors seem to not have the presence that the actors of yesterday possess. There are many very good actors today. Robert DeNiro is a great example of this but they are few and far between. Could it be the type of movies the actors today are given? Movies today are relying more upon the remake and that could have an effect on the acting quality in Hollywood, but even the original productions today do not have punch they once did. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, such as The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, Shindlers List, which are exceptional movies with great acting.

The discussion often rages about comparing eras in any genre, but todays actors generally have a lot of catch up to do. As more and more movies are made the balance may swing back to todays actor, but for the moment the greats still have the upper hand.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Season 6) DVD Review

The brainchild of writer Joss Whedon, Buffy The Vampire Slayer originally entered American pop culture as a full-length feature film, starring Kristy Swanson, in 1992. But creator Whedon felt that the project never quite did justice to the full scope of his vision, so he managed turn the film into a television series in 1997. The result of Whedon's increased artistic freedom is a series that has enjoyed both critical acclaim and audience notoriety. Nominated for 14 Emmy's during its seven year run, the show managed to win only two (both in 1998 for Outstanding Makeup and Outstanding Music Composition in a television series). Yet, the true success for Buffy The Vampire Slayer is indicated by the massive success of the show's long run, strong DVD sales, and the overwhelming success of the series spin-off Angel

Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the title role of Buffy Anne Summers, a teenage girl who stands alone among her generation as the chosen one able to stand against va mpires, demons, and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer But Buffy is not alone in fulfilling her destiny as a slayer of vampires. She also receives help from the high school librarian, Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), who is a Watcher - the one chosen to train and guide slayers on their developmental path. In addition, new friends Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan - of American Pie fame) and Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon) quickly uncover the truth of Buffy's destiny, and they often aid her in defending the world against evil forces

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Season 6) DVD offers a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere Bargaining: Part 1 in which the Slayerettes continue to chase after vampires in the aftermath of Buffy's death. Despite Willow's attempts to cover up the Slayer's death, a vampire discovers the truth and tells his friends. While Giles prepares to move away, Willow, Tara, Xander, and Anya perform a spell with the hope of resurrecting Buffy, but when vampires arrive, they must flee before learning if the spell worked or not Other notable episodes from Season 6 include After Life in which Buffy, now resurrected by the spell, finds herself craving the peace and solitude of the after life, and Wrecked in which a spaced out Willow crashes her car while driving via the use of magic instead of her hands

Friends (Season 10) DVD Review

Along with Seinfeld and Frasier, Friends dominated the must-see TV of the 1990's. Winner of innumerable television awards, the show features the lives of six friends in their late-twenties/early-thirties living in New York City - Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), and Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry). The six friends spend the majority of their time in a coffee house named Central Perk or in either Monica's apartment or Joey and Chandler's apartment.

The Friends (Season 10) DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere The One After Joey and Rachel Kiss in which Joey and Rachel & Ross and Charlie decide to wait until Ross and Joey talk to each other before moving forward with their respective relationships. Joey is reluctant to bring up the subject, and Ross walks in on Joey and Rachel kissing.
