Movie Review Arlington Road (1999)

ARLINGTON ROAD (Jeff Bridges, Tim Robbins) (1999) Do you know who your friendly neighbors actually are? And could they be the same folks who blew up the federal building in a large Midwestern metropolis and intending to do even worse right in the heart of the nations capital?

And can a history professor, who has lost his FBI agent wife in a bust that went very wrong a few years back, can save us from the impending disaster?

This thriller, with a script that won the prestigious Nichols screenplay competition in 1996, is a good watch. The ending is especially noteworthy. It is as good as the ending of the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Both lead actors do their jobs well. No problem there either. Supporting cast also shine.

But there is a whopper of a coincidence towards the end of the movie that enables Bridges to see and follow the white van that carry both his kidnapped son and the explosives that is hard to swallow! Too much.

What are the chances of just seeing The Van drive by when you are checking out the public phone at a shopping mall that your murdered girlfriend has last seen using? How many times in life people just happen to stumble upon such crucial evidence in broad daylight, in as busy a public domain as a shopping mall? That ruined the whole viewing experience for me.

A good thriller if you can just gloss over that kind of a gaping hole in the script. A 6 out of 10.

All In The Family (Season 4) DVD Review

The #1 Nielsen rated program from 1971 to 1976, All In The Family is quite simply one of the greatest television programs in history. Movie Review Firewall (2006)

Haven't we seen this movie before? Wasn't there another movie in which Harrison Ford was again trying to defend his family against rude intruders crashing into his home uninvited? Was it called Patriot Games (1992)?

Here we have the same idea. In Patriot Games the prime mover was politics. In this one, it is money. But it's pretty much the same song and dance.

A bunch of money-crazy hi-tech maniacs take Jack Stanfield's family hostage. Why? Because Stanfield (played by Ford) is the VP of Security at a big fat bank in Seattle (rain rain rain) controlling hundreds of millions of dollars. Since he is the guy who set up the security Firewall, he can also penetrate it if he wants to and transfer $100 million dollars to an offshore account. But to do that, he needs a little convincing. And that' s where his wife, daughter and son comes into play. They are taken hostage in their own home until Stanfield delivers the goods.

As Stanfield reports for work as though nothing has happened and tries to find a way to get out the jam, he is faced with the dilemma of not letting anyone know what's going on back at home. Because if his office mates know anything about the attack and the hostage crisis, they might call the cops. Then the bad guys can say goodbye to the $100 million while Stanfield says the same to his family.

What makes things worse is that the leader of the psychopaths, the tall and lanky blond Bill Cox (played by Paul Bettany) looks and talks just like an upper-class banker (complete with the obligatory British accent). So he visits Stanfield at his office pretending he is a colleague of his and takes a personal tour of the super secure servers inside the bank's well-protected data vault.

In one scene, Stanfield manages to capture the numbers of 10,000 accounts by a silly home-made contraption made from his daughter's iPod, believe it or not! All he needs to do next is to transfer $10,000 from each account to the offshore number.

At the end, Stanfield turns the tables around on the psychos. He hacks into the Cayman Islands bank account of the bad guys and starts to withdraw huge chunks of dineros while he has Cox on the phone. They will either let go of his family or he will deplete all they have as they watch the proceedings live on a laptop.

The final confrontation between the good and the evil takes place in the form of a hand to hand combat at a remote seaside house. (Note for the scriptWriter -- always personalize the core conflict.)

After crashing through the floors, staircases and (yes) even walls, Stanfield and Cox find themselves in a ditch outside the house, trying to gouge each other's eyes out.

In the end (of course) much older Stanfield manages to bury the sharp end of a pick ax in between the shoulder blades of the much younger and more powerful Cox. Why? Because Stanfield is the good guy and he has to win regardless of his physical condition.

A formulaic thriller that begins and ends as expected, true to all the honorable cliches known to Hollywood. Watch it if 1) there is nothing better on the tube, 2) you are a true Harrison Ford fan, or 3) you really believe that it's possible to rob a modern bank by using nothing more than the scanning rod of a fax machine and an iPod.

A yawning 6 out of 10.

Ever Wanted to be a TV Star?

Well, its not easy, but you can become a star. At least a local one.

The secret is using your local Cable Public Access. The bottom line is this: Cable operators are required by law to provide Public Access television for their franchises. Public Access is usually provided to individuals or non-profit organizations. Which means, of course, that you cant come on as a blatantly commercial program, but will need to remember our rule of thumb: you are there to provide information, and not to get sales.

None of which means you have to turn away business if it comes to you because you were on TV last week. It just means that your primary focus on your program must be informational and non-commercial.

One of the best things about doing a local Public Access program is that you will be seen as an authority on whatever subject you bring to the table. Theres also nothing that says you cant tout your program in your brochures, website, business cards, and the re -- if you have one -- in an office or retail location.

Lets consider an example. Lets say youre a lawyer, and you specialize in bankruptcy cases. Do you think you could come up with a 15 minute informational program every week, dealing with different aspects of the bankruptcy code and laws? Or if youre a nurse who specializes in foot care? Could you provide 15 minutes worth of educational programming dealing with foot pain, foot care, and therapies for the feet?

Of course you can. The reality is that most professionals imagine that the Public knows as much as the professional does about his area of expertise. But they dont. And this is your chance to educate them, as well as letting your name and face get better known to the Public. Youll also want to have a well-done website to provide further information. Mention the URL for your site whenever you can work it in.

TV is different from Radio, of course. You can do Radio interviews in your pajamas. I dont recommend that for TV.

You will want to be well-dressed, preferably (and this depends on the nature of what youre teaching about) in a dark suit. Dark because TV will tend to make you look 10 pounds heavier than what you are. Also because a dark suit -- for men or women -- gives an air of authority. Because of the weight issue, you may also want to lose a few pounds before you begin recording.

Most local Cable authorities provide orientation sessions for prospective broadcasters, and most of them require your attendance. But whether they require it or not, you will definitely want to go, so you can become familiar w ith the process. You should know, as well, that most local Cable systems require that you live within the Cable area they cover.

MacGyver (DVD) Review

A unique and different kind of TV action series, MacGyver made its television premiere in the Fall of 1985 to widespread fanfare. Audiences immediately responded to the title character and his unusual penchant for turning everyday items like chewing gum and paperclips into elaborate life-saving contraptions. In this way, it maintained a slight resemblance to The A-Team, and this recurring plot device helped MacGyver build a strong cult following

Richard Dean Anderson plays the title role of MacGyver, an energetic employee of the fictional Phoenix Foundation for Research. An unorthodox hero by action series standards, MacGyver has a deadly fear of heights. A pacifist who refuses to use weapons, he relies heavily on his ability to use his brain and tinker with the various materials at his disposal. MacGyver's best friend, and the director of the Phoenix Foundation, is Pete Thornton (Dana Elcar). Pete often sends MacGyver on Foundation missions and sometimes comes to hi s aid (usually after MacGyver has saved the day). In addition, MacGyver is joined on a regular basis by his airplane pilot friend Jack Dalton (Bruce McGill), a man who constantly entangles himself in illegal activities and other troublesome situations. Between the usual slew of bad guys, the vendetta of archenemy Murdoc (Michael Des Barres), and his multitude of troublesome friends, MacGyver is always in the midst of interesting and dangerous events, and the show's true entertainment value derives from watching MacGyver's distinctive method of dealing with each one

The MacGyver DVD features a number of action-packed episodes including the series pilot in which MacGyver is forced to race against the clock when a team of scientists are trapped underground after a lab experiment goes awry. Wanting to contain the leak, the Army allots a small time window for MacGyver to pull off his mission before they destroy the facility Fans will make note of some interesting aspects of the pilot episode such as Dana Elcar's role as another character, MacGyver's use of a gun, and MacGyver's boss is a man named Gantner (Michael Lerner) Other notable episodes from Season 1 include Trumbo's World in which MacGyver, while on expedition in Brazil, encounters and wages war with a mile-wide column of army ants, and Every Time She Smiles in which MacGyver meets up with a beautiful, yet talkative, artist named Penny Parker (Teri Hatcher) and the two must escape the clutches of the KGB

I Am Not Speaking Politically Correctly About The Movie Memoirs Of A Geisha

Growing up in Korea, I was simply a woman. However, in the US, most Americans I meet immediately categorize me as an Asian woman. Then often ask me upon first meeting, Where are you from? How long have been in the US? Do you speak English? I get all of these questions due to my Asian look. People even think Im nice or non-confrontational because thats how Asian women are, not because thats how I am as an individual.

The movie Memoirs of a Geisha, based on Arthur Goldens best-selling book, might have teased non-Asian women, making them curious and then mystified, wanting to know more about the secrets of attraction that Asian women possess. The movie also might have boosted or encouraged the stereotype of the Asian womans exotic and erotic beauty.

I took this as a positive stereotype, one that inspired me as an Asian woman (or simply as a woman), to try to somewhat live up to the standard, whether it is fully a true reflection of most Asian women or not. I want to be exotic and at least a bit erotic; and beautiful too. If youre a woman, dont you want at least a little bit of this, as well?

The attraction to Asian women can be so strong that some American men develop a female Asian fetish or yellow fever, the viral cause of this increase in male body temperature and heart rate thought to be the womans great femininity and mysterious Asian look. Of course, there can be negative Asian female stereotypes such as materialistic or haughty that I do not feel either fit me or inspire me to emulate them. Aware of these specific negative generalizations, perhaps Ill be inspired to guard against any excessive materialism or unapproachable behavior.

I am not speaking politically correctly here, am I?
