Nowadays it became popular to make thematic Movies that consist of several novels made under the scheme: 1960ies 1980ies and 2000. Such kind of events` development gives the most vivid and descriptive picture of people`s life, their moral, as well as their culture and society's values. As it's well known the events that happened in the social life at the second half of the 20th century had changed people`s values and views on lots of things and made a social revolution in most of the societies worldwide. The changes happened refer to the private, personal life, sexual freedoms and its perception by the society.
Even now when a lot have been said, discussed, published and experienced the arguments about sexual freedoms and abortions attract a lot of public attention and are of public concern.
I f these walls could talk part one and part two have different message to deliver because they cover two different topics of the biggest social concern nowadays: homosexual issues and abortions. But in general these Movies also have much in common, they give a lot of evidence to think about and to look on these issues not just by one-side look but from different perspectives as well.
If these walls could talk, directed by Cher and Nancy Savoca in 1996 (HBO Studios) shows a trilogy of episodes of abortion issues that happened in the life of three different women who lived in one house. Each of three women who lived in different time in that house finds herself in trouble because of unwanted pregnancy and all of them have to make the only decision. The first part of the Movie, featuring Demi Moore seems to be the strongest one. A widowed nurse in 1952 with limited finances and no support from others she doesn`t have many options.
The second part of the Movie shows a story of 1970s, to be more specific it`s Sissy Spacek, who is a mother with already four kids and who is trying to get a college degree to find a better job, also finds out of being pregnant. The fifth child will make her life more complicated that has a lot of problems already. And her daughter shown as influenced by feminist ideas encourages and persuades her to make an abortion, which is a serious step and decision for her.
The last part shows nowadays realities. Coll ege student, played by Anne Heche, becomes pregnant and baby`s father is her college professor who is married by the way. The decision about making an abortion is argued all the time with her best friend, played by Jada Pinkett, who is absolutely against abortion. Her situation becomes more contradictive when she watches the demonstration of pro-life activists near the abortion clinics.
By showing the decisions made by these three women and the outcomes of the abortion the Movie doesn`t want to persuade the viewer in something or prove him something. It`s more about the personal choices and conclusions that we`ll make after watching the scenes of a deep psychological, and moral meaning and context.
If these walls could talk part two (2000) covers the topic of homosexual relations and perception of them by the society. Dividing the Movie into three parts, Movie directors Martha Coolidge, Anne Heche and Jane Anderson showed how the attitude towards lesbians was changing in years from 1960ies to modern time. If in sixties it was total hostility, aggression, and cruelty, in 1980ies it was struggle for rights and activism for equality, then in the year of 2000 its basically tolerance, and neutral attitude towards the problem of homosexual marriages, and related issues. The first story of the Movie tells about a elderly lesbian couple. One of them dies and other one suffers from the death of her beloved. Their house is getting full of relatives, and it seem that they come from everywhere. Considering themselves to be the only heirs, they divide the property. None of them is really sure about the true life of their aunt, they just can hardly guess about her real life. And understandably none of them takes into consideration the interests of their aunts beloved. The hostility causes a lot of sufferings and becomes a personal tragedy for the character played by Venessa Redgrave.
The second story of the Movie is about college student feminists who are seem to be gay and struggle for their rights. One day a stranger appears in their environment. It`s a girl that imitates a young man in manners, behavior, clothing, etc. So if it`s hard for lesbians to accept other people who differ from them, than what can be said about heterosexuals?
The last part of the Movie tells about the more modern problem that lesbian couples face in their life. It`s their dream about having a baby. Sharon Stone and Ellen Degeneres, who play the main characters ask a gay couple to be donors, but natural father claims to see the baby in future. And finally everything went successful. This part of the Movie has a funny episode: having found that one of them is pregnant, another one is start hugging the nurse, but having recalled about her sexual orientation she turns to her girl friend and kisses her.
The only wick point of the Movie is that three parts were directed by three different people separately and the last part lacks psychologies and feelings. Both Movies of If these walks could talk give a lot of things to think about modern realities. If the first part will open the eyes on the realities of abortion and will make someone to think about it like a murder, then the second part will show to everyone that in majority lesbians don`t have much in common with perversion, but are the equal members of the society who have their own problems, moments of happiness, joy an d sorrow as all normal people do. These Movies that have a deep psychological and educational meaning will be very valuable for those who want to get a more objective picture on the most of hidden and banned aspects of society`s life.
