Jack LaLanne The Godfather of Fitness

Jack LaLanne recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Known to millions of TV viewers as The Godfather of Fitness, Jack is still looking good, going strong and a great inspiration. Youve got to work at living, Jack says. 99.9% of Americans work at dying! Youve got to eat right, exercise and have goals and challenges.

Jack didnt always lead a healthy lifestyle. As a kid, he says, I was a sugarholic. I was a junk food junkie. It made me weak and it made me mean. But at a lecture in 1929, pioneering nutritionist Paul Bragg called 15 year old Lalanne a human garbage can. Ever since then Jack has been following Braggs philosophy If you obey natures laws, youll be born again.

And Jack certainly was born again. He immediately changed his diet no white flour, no sugar, no meat and lots of fish, fruits, vegetables and nutritional supplements. He also started lifting weights and became a bodybuilder, eventually being named Professional Mr. America in 1955 when he was in his 40s.

LaLanne also became a hard working businessman. At 18, he ran his own bakery selling healthy breads. At 21, he opened the first health club in the country with a gym, health food store and juice bar in downtown Oakland, California. His club became the prototype of all modern health spas. Today more than 200 clubs still bear the Jack LaLanne name.

But it was on TV that Jack became famous all over the world. In 1951, he started the first exercise show. Critics thought hed be off the air in six weeks, but The Jack LaLanne Show ran for an amazing 34 years. Black and white reruns of the jump-suited LaLanne can still be seen twice each weekday morning on ESPN Classic.

Jack loves the limelight and over his seventy year career, he always used it effectively to promote himself, his show and his gyms. Hes written books, produced exercise videos and acted in dozens of TV shows and films, usually playing himself. But hes probably best known for his amazing fea ts of strength.

At 41, he swam from Alcatraz to Fishermens Wharf in San Francisco wearing handcuffs. At 45, he performed a thousand push-ups and a thousand chin-ups in an hour. And once on an old TV show, he did 1,033 sit-ups in 23 minutes. At 60, he repeated his Alcatraz swim, but this time he did it handcuffed, shackled and towing a thousand-pound boat. And at 70, handcuffed and shackled, LaLanne towed 70 boats holding 70 people for a mile and a half across Long Beach harbor.

Jack LaLanne is definitely one of a kind. At 90, even though his hair is thinner and grayer and his walk a little slower, Jack still maintains his strict diet and exercises daily, including lifting weights and an hour of swimming. He claims to feel better than ever. Ive got no aches and no pains. If I get a sniffle, its gone the next day. Everythings working. Just look at my wife. Shes smiling.

LaLanne believes a half hour of exercise four or five times a week is more than enough for the average person. You dont have to work out seven days a week like I do. he said. Im a nut. I just want to see how long I can keep this up.

For years LaLanne talked about swimming the 26 miles from Catalina Island to Los Angeles underwater to celebrate his 90th birthday. Elaine, his wife and partner for fifty years threatened to divorce him if he tried such a stunt. When asked what he would do instead, Jack answered with a grin, Tow my wife across the bathtub.

I was 40 years ahead of my time, La Lanne says. People thought I was a charlatan and a nut. Doctors were against me. Id be 6 foot 2 if the medical profession hadnt beaten me down. (Jack is 5 foot 6.) They said that working out with weights would give people heart attacks and they would lose their sex drive; women would look like men. And today all the world class athletes work out with weights.

When asked about the difference between public attitude when he opened his first gym in 1935 and now, Jac k laughs and answers with a gleam in his eye, Back then I was a crackpot. Today Im an authority. And believe me, I cant die. It would ruin my image.

Rent Movies on the Web

Renting Movies on the web can be a huge time saver for most rural living individuals who have to commute a fairly large distance to rent their favorite Movies. Today, we will be examining why Movie rentals online are gaining so much popularity.

CONVIENANCE

Convenience is truly a luxury worth having these days. People are looking for ways to save time and effort. Everything these days has to be fast and easy. Movie rental companies on the web provide that and much more. First of all and most important they deliver the Movie right to your front door. No more wasting your gas going to your favorite rental store, only to find out that the Movie you wanted is no longer available and wont be available until you make that drive again. Gas is too expensive these day, who wants to spend all that money driving to a Movie store when you can easily accomplish the same task on your home computer?

CHEAP AND EASY

The average Movie store charges from $3.00 to $6.00 dollars per Movie rental. As you can see, this could get very expensive, especially if youre renting numerous titles per week. Most of the well known Movie rental clubs like Netflix, Blockbuster Online, Intelliflix and DVD Avenue only charge $12.95 to $19.95 per month for unlimited Movie rentals. So lets say you rent 2 titles per week at the local Movie store. That equal around $30.00 dollars per month compared to $12 to $13 dollars per month with the online alternative. This is a large savings at the end of the month.

Not only does this become very cost affective for you in the long run, but you also get a larger selection of Movies to watch from the web as well, which brings us to the next point.

MOVIE RENTAL SELECTIONS

If you thought that the selection of Movie titles was incredible at your local Blockbuster or Hollywood Video, you aint seen nothing yet. When you rent Movies on the web, your not only renting some of the newer release titles, but you also get a choice of classic selections as well. Due to the fact that most of these online rental clubs have many warehouses all over the nation that can be shipped to your address at the drop of a dime, you get a massive selection of Movies at the snap of a finger. Now, not all Movie rental clubs were created equal in this world of Movie rentals on the web, so if your looking for selection, I would personally stick to the top rental clubs. At this point in time, Netflix, Blockbuster Online, and Intelliflix have a great selection of titles at prices you just cant beat locally.

With all the advantages mentioned above, you should definately look into signing up for an rental Movie club on the web. There are a few places on the interne t where you will find detailed reviews of the top online Movie rental clubs in the US. For more information, please read below.

Movie Review L.A. Story

L.A. STORY (1991) is a somewhat disappointing piece of lazy reverie for a true genius like Steve Martin only because we all know how great he can be when he wants to (The Jerk, Three Amigos, Roxanne, etc.).

Martin, who has recently received the nation's highest comedy award Twain in 2005, plays Harris K. Telemacher, the whacky LA weatherman who falls in love with the British reporter Sara McDowel (Victoria Tenant who has been his wife in real life as well).

However, to be with the one he truly loves, Telemacher must get rid of the fake loves in his life and concentrate on what is true and pure.

In this pursuit, his mentor and guru proves to be none other than an LA freeway billboard which communicates with him through its lighted board in scenes shamelessly lifted off from the Steven Spielberg movie The Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).

It's thanks to the billboard's magical wisdom that the hapless Telemacher finds salvation at the end. I f elt that was a rather sad commentary on the state of human affairs in the City of Angels.

As a catalog of the quirky characters and settings (parking lot reserved for Capricorns, for example) the film does have a certain archival value. But as a dramatic narrative it is contrived and forced.

For those who'd like to be exposed to the best Steve Martin's wonderful writing I heartily recommend SHOPGIRL, the book. L.A. STORY is a film which proves that comedy is hard indeed.

This supposed comedy rates a mournful 5 out of 10.

Review of Must Have Dogs

Plot: A forty-something preschool teacher looks to the personals for a change of pace and a relationship, with hilarious results.

Cast: Diane Lane, John Cusack, Elizabeth Perkins, Christopher Plummer, Dermot Mulroney, Stockard Channing, and more.

Rating: Rated PG-13 for sexual content.

My Thoughts: The Movie was a very different type of love story. It was definitely entertaining, but there were times when I thought it was predictable. However, if you are looking for a Movie that doesn't require too much thought to enjoy, this is a good Movie to see. It is a comedy so the Movie often makes fun of situations that you or someone you know could be facing. However, sometimes this is exactly what is needed to get someone out of their slump and moving forward.

Parts parents might want to know about:

1. The search for a condom: Safe sex vs. casual sex

2. Multiple partners: The father in this Movie has several at the same time

3. Online dating sites: Are they safe? Who might you meet on these sites? How truthful are the profiles found there?

4. Divorce can be painful, even wh en no children are involved.

5. The entire Movie focuses on dating. Sex is talked about frequently and there are a couple sexual scenes.

What stood out to me: The Movie shows the world of online dating. Meeting someone online can be dangerous at times and parents may want to watch this Movie with their children to help them understand that online dating doesn't always turn out with the perfect partner. It also shows how difficult it can be to move on after a divorce and how one's family needs to be supportive of the individual.

The above review is meant only as a guide. It shows my observations of the Movie. The review comes with no warranty whatever.

The Disney Channel

The Disney Channel owes much of its success to its new stable of young stars and the successful writers that produce such kid-savvy programming. Youll find many of the Disney Stars featured at DisneyChannelStars.info. Although not associated with the Disney Empire, DisneyChannelStars.info was created in the best traditions of Disney.

DisneyChannelStars will take you to visit a site dedicated to Miley Cyrus, star of the Disney hit, Hanna Montana, which follows the adventures of Hanna Montana, a teenager who leads another life as a Pop Star. Kids just love this stuff.

Youll also find a site for Zac Efron, star of the Disney movie turned series, High School Musical. Zac stars with Vanessa Anne Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale in a wonderful comedy about their auditions for the High School Musical. And all these Disney marketing machine parts have the Disney brand, known, loved & followed by billions around the world.

So Mr. Jobs, put your pride & greed aside and consider what you would really be giving up if you left Disney. If you need more ammunition for your stockholders note the following:

Even the mighty Steven Spielberg, David Geffen & former Disney chief Jeffery Katzenberg have not been able to beat the Disney machine. This despite the fact that Steven Spielberg is perhaps one of the greatest creative talents to ever walk the face of the earth and has a genuine Midas touch with Films. Even with this superior talent, the SKG combo has not been able to beat the Disney machine.

And lets not forget the tanking of the Antz and Chicken Run movies, their spectacular casts notwithstanding (Mel Gibson, Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone, Danny Glover). Plus their merchandising (area of great and essential profits) performed even worse.

Please feel free to reprint this article, just be sure that my signature file remains in tact and the link inside of it is clickable to the proper destination. To learn more about what Disn ey Channel Stars does visit his site at Miley Cyrus.

Al Gore's Inconvenient Infomercial: A Movie Review Part Two

The Film shows images of a nuclear reactor, a wind farm and running water. Was the blustering Al or his bewildered movie director hoping the audience would choose a solution for them? At least Ross Perot, in his infomercials, had some solution for the ills then facing America. Al has none. Zippo. Nada. Just join Als crusade and start driving a hybrid car. Or did he mean a bicycle? After all, in one scene, Al boasts about the Chinese riding their bicycles and flashes a dated photo showing this. Wake up, Al, last we heard, the Chinese were driving Beemers and Benzes, not bicycles. Bikes are reserved for environmentalist weenies who cant find a real job.

Al seems to be pro-nuclear, but claims there are problems with proliferation and waste disposal. In an interview with Australias The Age newspaper, published in November 2005, Gore told the repor ter he was not reflexively against nuclear energy. Wearing his hat as a fund manager for the Generation Fund, he told the newspaper that investing in Uranium mining comes down to sustainability. In another interview with Grist Magazines David Roberts, published in May of this year, Gore responded to questioning about the nuclear energy renaissance, saying, I doubt nuclear power will play a much larger role than it does now. Hows that for naivet in the context of dozens of countries having already announced their plans to advance their nuclear energy programs?

Perhaps, Gore will begin touting Renewables, as Hillary Clinton has done on behalf of lapdog/energy guru Amory Lovins. We asked third-term Wyoming legislator, David R. Miller, who is also president of a U.S. Uranium development company, Strathmore Minerals, about the madness over Renewables becoming a serious factor for baseload electricity generation. Miller told us, We were 100 percent renewable 300 years ago, 50 percent renewable 100 years ago and 30 percent renewable 50 years ago. Now, we are less than 10 percent renewable and shrinking fast.

About nuclear energy, Miller added, It nearly unlimited. We are learning to use better technology to make purer energy to do more for us. Millers rebuttal on Al Gores message was emphatic, Those that preach about saving the earth should practice what they speak, but the loudest voices are those that consu me the most. Miller pointed out, Only the rich and idle have time to rail against too much consumption. But they want you to stop the consuming, not them.

One could look deeper to better understand Al Gores ambiguity toward any solution. For example, is Al Gores family still a large shareholder of Occidental Petroleum? After all, his father took a consultancy with a subsidiary of the multi-national oil firm, upon leaving the U.S. Senate in 1970. Just in time to cash in on the oil embargo of 1973, Al Gores dad was paid $500,000 per year for his services. Al Gore Sr. also served as a company director. Why was Al Gores father on such great terms with Armand Hammer, the founder of Occidental Petroleum? Hammer was a good buddy of Josef Stalin and his Kremlin successors. Hammers dad introduced Little Armand to Stalin, who helped him build the Hammer Empire. All this in return for one small favor: Julius Hammer founded the U.S. Communist Party.

Have the sins of the fath er visited the son? For the past thirty or forty years, Al Gore has allegedly received a mining royalty check from Occidental Petroleum for zInc ore discovered on the Gore family property. Reportedly, Al has been paid about $20,000 annually for mining rights to the property. But, thats just chump change. Long before the Buddhist Temple fund-raising fiasco in Los Angeles, Al Gore was involved in dubious political financings.

We didnt look that much more deeply into Al Gore. Truthfully, why bother? Gores remorse appears rigged; his acting is pathetic. For example, his sister died of lung cancer, before the family stopped growing tobacco. He makes a really big deal about this in his movie (despite his own alleged chain-smoking habits as a college student). But he failed to mention he continued receiving royalties from his tobacco farm for years after his sister died.

Gore also forgot his vivid 1988 presidential election campaign speeches, defending tobacco farmers in the southern United States. Imagine Mr. Clean telling tobacco farmers about how he, himself, tilled the soil with his bare hands and picked dem dar tobacco leaves wit his own fingers! Our research shows Gore continued accepting campaign donations from tobacco companies until at least 1990. Instead of being truthful with his audience, Gore mentioned in passing that the reason he ran for President in 1988 was to give Global Warming some exposure. Hypocrisy or ambivalence? You decide.

In his Film, Gore claimed to have changed the way he performed his congressional duties after his six-year old son was hit by a car and nearly died. Throughout his movie, Gore uses every personal tragedy to play upon the audiences heart strings . What does that have to do with Global Warming? Nothing, but it aids and abets an otherwise insIncere politician to better sell his purported sIncerity concerning abrupt climate change. The message is good; the messenger needs to take up a new hobby. Like unsuccessfully running for president again so he can finally get his just deserves: Strike Three, youre outa here!

Why pay good money to get bored out of your skull with this blas movie? Save the $7 to $10 (or more) on Al Gores Inconvenient Infomercial by reading the same stuff for no charge whatsoever (and without the deep-thinking, brooding ex-politi cian who spends nearly all of his 100 minutes preaching in your face). Kevin Bambrough and Eric Sprott wrote a detailed report, covering a great deal, if not more than what the Gore movie attempted to discuss.

Bloody Mallory A Bloody Good Time

Tagline: Evil Has a New Enemy.

When I think of off-the-wall horror/comedy Films, rarely do the French spring to mind. But thats exactly where this guilty pleasure of a movie originates from. Featuring an international cast, Bloody Mallory aims for cult status with an eclectic blend of martial arts, manga attitude, and lots of girls in brightly-colored wigs.

At the dawn of the third millennium, a group of Anti-Paranormal Commandos is led by Mallory (Olivia Bonamy), a beautiful monster hunter with hot red hair and an equally hot pink hearse. Rounding out her group is Vena Cava (Jeffrey Ribier), a towering transvestite who also happens to be an explosives specialist, and Talking Tina (Thylda Bares), a blue-haired pre-teen whos mute, telepathic, and has a 360 IQ. When Pope Hieronymus I (Laurent Spielvogel) is kidnapped, Mallory and her g ang must team up with a Vatican bodyguard, Father Carras (Adria Collado), to battle ghouls, fallen angels, succubi, and a vampire of the French aristocracy named Lady Valentine (Valentina Vargas). If they succeed, the world is saved. But if they fail, an ancient prophecy will be fulfilled and mankind will disappear from the earth forever. Sound funky? Well, thats because it is.

While Ill certainly give screenwriters Stephane Kazandjian and Julien Magnat (who also directed) credit for originality of plot, much of the script is flat, uneven, and fails to elevate the Film beyond simple low-budget fare. There are times that Mallory looks and sounds like a really well-made porno (without the Sex, of course), but its still h ard to hate a movie which includes lines like The Popemobile is waiting downstairs or Vena Cava and Talking Tina, stay with the Pope. Its so absurd that it has a certain charm all its own. What a shame that so many of the interesting ideas are never full realized.

The look of the Film, although obviously low-budget, is still one of its strongest points, and the manga influence is obvious throughout. Right from the beginning, were treated to two very nice shots. The first is Mallory chasing down her demonic husband (Julien Boisselier) with an axe (seems she unknowingly married a demon and he wanted to sacrifice her on their wedding night), and the second is a beautifully rendered shot of the Paris skyline with gargoyles prominently displayed in the foreground. These two moments really set the tone early and give viewers a taste of things to come.

The costuming is top-notch, with each outfit adding to the wearers personality and attitude. Theres also the fact that none of the main characters go with their natural hair color. From bright red to neon blue, we can once again see the heavy influence of Japanese animation on the look and feel of the Film. One cant help but wonder if the director would have cast actors with unusually large eyes if they had been available.

But while the trippy mish-mash of styles and colors may work in the visual department, it proves to be an impediment in other areas. Just when you think the movie is going to get all dark and heavy-handed, something completely absurd happens. Then, when you start digging the comedic aspect of Mallory, it throws you another curve ball and changes tone again. Director Julien Magnat described his Film as a gothic comedy. I prefer to call it a mess. The lack of a consistent tone hurts the picture in the long run, never allowing the audience to settle into a comfortable rhythm. While it still has its moments, I only wish that they would have picked a genre and stuck with it. I guess they were trying to do what Buffy the Vampire Slayer or From Dusk Till Dawn did. Unfortunately, viewers of Mallory will quickly realize that those Films did it far better.

One notable exception is the relationship between Mallory and her dead husband, which is played out over the course of the Film. Even though she chopped him up with an axe and consigned his soul to limbo, Mallory continues to contact him via ritual for critical information. These scenes are nicely done, and the audience can tell that this couple still grudgingly cares for one another, despite their history of violence and betrayal. This culminates when Mallory is near death and her ex-husband holds the key to her salvation.

The action sequences are about what youd expect from a low-budget Film, although there are some respectable special effects and computer animation. But the action is usually brief, and theres not as much of it as one might hope. And if youre looking for a lot of gore, look elsewhere. With the exception of a few interesting moments (exploding nuns), the blood and guts are kept to a minimum.

The cast does an adequate job considering the level of Film theyre in, although most seem doomed to toil in B-Movies for the duration of their careers. The standout is the Films star, Olivia Bonamy. Clad in red leather and sporting a variety of weapons, Bonamy is able to look action-ready while still maintaining a ton of Sex appeal. She also does a respectable job in the action sequences (unlike, say, Kristy Swanson in Buffy) and seems to be having a campy good time. Its hard to gauge how much acting talent she actually has, as the Film simply doesnt require that much from its lead. But she does have a strong screen presence and knockout looks, so shes already ahead of the game.

Overall, Mallory will most likely be a disappointment for those looking for high art or a top-flight genre Film. But if youve lowered your expectations and simply want a few laughs and something to watch while you eat a bag of popcorn, then this may be the movie for you.
