Al Gore's Inconvenient Infomercial: A Movie Review Part Two

The Film shows images of a nuclear reactor, a wind farm and running water. Was the blustering Al or his bewildered movie director hoping the audience would choose a solution for them? At least Ross Perot, in his infomercials, had some solution for the ills then facing America. Al has none. Zippo. Nada. Just join Als crusade and start driving a hybrid car. Or did he mean a bicycle? After all, in one scene, Al boasts about the Chinese riding their bicycles and flashes a dated photo showing this. Wake up, Al, last we heard, the Chinese were driving Beemers and Benzes, not bicycles. Bikes are reserved for environmentalist weenies who cant find a real job.

Al seems to be pro-nuclear, but claims there are problems with proliferation and waste disposal. In an interview with Australias The Age newspaper, published in November 2005, Gore told the repor ter he was not reflexively against nuclear energy. Wearing his hat as a fund manager for the Generation Fund, he told the newspaper that investing in Uranium mining comes down to sustainability. In another interview with Grist Magazines David Roberts, published in May of this year, Gore responded to questioning about the nuclear energy renaissance, saying, I doubt nuclear power will play a much larger role than it does now. Hows that for naivet in the context of dozens of countries having already announced their plans to advance their nuclear energy programs?

Perhaps, Gore will begin touting Renewables, as Hillary Clinton has done on behalf of lapdog/energy guru Amory Lovins. We asked third-term Wyoming legislator, David R. Miller, who is also president of a U.S. Uranium development company, Strathmore Minerals, about the madness over Renewables becoming a serious factor for baseload electricity generation. Miller told us, We were 100 percent renewable 300 years ago, 50 percent renewable 100 years ago and 30 percent renewable 50 years ago. Now, we are less than 10 percent renewable and shrinking fast.

About nuclear energy, Miller added, It nearly unlimited. We are learning to use better technology to make purer energy to do more for us. Millers rebuttal on Al Gores message was emphatic, Those that preach about saving the earth should practice what they speak, but the loudest voices are those that consu me the most. Miller pointed out, Only the rich and idle have time to rail against too much consumption. But they want you to stop the consuming, not them.

One could look deeper to better understand Al Gores ambiguity toward any solution. For example, is Al Gores family still a large shareholder of Occidental Petroleum? After all, his father took a consultancy with a subsidiary of the multi-national oil firm, upon leaving the U.S. Senate in 1970. Just in time to cash in on the oil embargo of 1973, Al Gores dad was paid $500,000 per year for his services. Al Gore Sr. also served as a company director. Why was Al Gores father on such great terms with Armand Hammer, the founder of Occidental Petroleum? Hammer was a good buddy of Josef Stalin and his Kremlin successors. Hammers dad introduced Little Armand to Stalin, who helped him build the Hammer Empire. All this in return for one small favor: Julius Hammer founded the U.S. Communist Party.

Have the sins of the fath er visited the son? For the past thirty or forty years, Al Gore has allegedly received a mining royalty check from Occidental Petroleum for zInc ore discovered on the Gore family property. Reportedly, Al has been paid about $20,000 annually for mining rights to the property. But, thats just chump change. Long before the Buddhist Temple fund-raising fiasco in Los Angeles, Al Gore was involved in dubious political financings.

We didnt look that much more deeply into Al Gore. Truthfully, why bother? Gores remorse appears rigged; his acting is pathetic. For example, his sister died of lung cancer, before the family stopped growing tobacco. He makes a really big deal about this in his movie (despite his own alleged chain-smoking habits as a college student). But he failed to mention he continued receiving royalties from his tobacco farm for years after his sister died.

Gore also forgot his vivid 1988 presidential election campaign speeches, defending tobacco farmers in the southern United States. Imagine Mr. Clean telling tobacco farmers about how he, himself, tilled the soil with his bare hands and picked dem dar tobacco leaves wit his own fingers! Our research shows Gore continued accepting campaign donations from tobacco companies until at least 1990. Instead of being truthful with his audience, Gore mentioned in passing that the reason he ran for President in 1988 was to give Global Warming some exposure. Hypocrisy or ambivalence? You decide.

In his Film, Gore claimed to have changed the way he performed his congressional duties after his six-year old son was hit by a car and nearly died. Throughout his movie, Gore uses every personal tragedy to play upon the audiences heart strings . What does that have to do with Global Warming? Nothing, but it aids and abets an otherwise insIncere politician to better sell his purported sIncerity concerning abrupt climate change. The message is good; the messenger needs to take up a new hobby. Like unsuccessfully running for president again so he can finally get his just deserves: Strike Three, youre outa here!

Why pay good money to get bored out of your skull with this blas movie? Save the $7 to $10 (or more) on Al Gores Inconvenient Infomercial by reading the same stuff for no charge whatsoever (and without the deep-thinking, brooding ex-politi cian who spends nearly all of his 100 minutes preaching in your face). Kevin Bambrough and Eric Sprott wrote a detailed report, covering a great deal, if not more than what the Gore movie attempted to discuss.

Bloody Mallory A Bloody Good Time

Tagline: Evil Has a New Enemy.

When I think of off-the-wall horror/comedy Films, rarely do the French spring to mind. But thats exactly where this guilty pleasure of a movie originates from. Featuring an international cast, Bloody Mallory aims for cult status with an eclectic blend of martial arts, manga attitude, and lots of girls in brightly-colored wigs.

At the dawn of the third millennium, a group of Anti-Paranormal Commandos is led by Mallory (Olivia Bonamy), a beautiful monster hunter with hot red hair and an equally hot pink hearse. Rounding out her group is Vena Cava (Jeffrey Ribier), a towering transvestite who also happens to be an explosives specialist, and Talking Tina (Thylda Bares), a blue-haired pre-teen whos mute, telepathic, and has a 360 IQ. When Pope Hieronymus I (Laurent Spielvogel) is kidnapped, Mallory and her g ang must team up with a Vatican bodyguard, Father Carras (Adria Collado), to battle ghouls, fallen angels, succubi, and a vampire of the French aristocracy named Lady Valentine (Valentina Vargas). If they succeed, the world is saved. But if they fail, an ancient prophecy will be fulfilled and mankind will disappear from the earth forever. Sound funky? Well, thats because it is.

While Ill certainly give screenwriters Stephane Kazandjian and Julien Magnat (who also directed) credit for originality of plot, much of the script is flat, uneven, and fails to elevate the Film beyond simple low-budget fare. There are times that Mallory looks and sounds like a really well-made porno (without the Sex, of course), but its still h ard to hate a movie which includes lines like The Popemobile is waiting downstairs or Vena Cava and Talking Tina, stay with the Pope. Its so absurd that it has a certain charm all its own. What a shame that so many of the interesting ideas are never full realized.

The look of the Film, although obviously low-budget, is still one of its strongest points, and the manga influence is obvious throughout. Right from the beginning, were treated to two very nice shots. The first is Mallory chasing down her demonic husband (Julien Boisselier) with an axe (seems she unknowingly married a demon and he wanted to sacrifice her on their wedding night), and the second is a beautifully rendered shot of the Paris skyline with gargoyles prominently displayed in the foreground. These two moments really set the tone early and give viewers a taste of things to come.

The costuming is top-notch, with each outfit adding to the wearers personality and attitude. Theres also the fact that none of the main characters go with their natural hair color. From bright red to neon blue, we can once again see the heavy influence of Japanese animation on the look and feel of the Film. One cant help but wonder if the director would have cast actors with unusually large eyes if they had been available.

But while the trippy mish-mash of styles and colors may work in the visual department, it proves to be an impediment in other areas. Just when you think the movie is going to get all dark and heavy-handed, something completely absurd happens. Then, when you start digging the comedic aspect of Mallory, it throws you another curve ball and changes tone again. Director Julien Magnat described his Film as a gothic comedy. I prefer to call it a mess. The lack of a consistent tone hurts the picture in the long run, never allowing the audience to settle into a comfortable rhythm. While it still has its moments, I only wish that they would have picked a genre and stuck with it. I guess they were trying to do what Buffy the Vampire Slayer or From Dusk Till Dawn did. Unfortunately, viewers of Mallory will quickly realize that those Films did it far better.

One notable exception is the relationship between Mallory and her dead husband, which is played out over the course of the Film. Even though she chopped him up with an axe and consigned his soul to limbo, Mallory continues to contact him via ritual for critical information. These scenes are nicely done, and the audience can tell that this couple still grudgingly cares for one another, despite their history of violence and betrayal. This culminates when Mallory is near death and her ex-husband holds the key to her salvation.

The action sequences are about what youd expect from a low-budget Film, although there are some respectable special effects and computer animation. But the action is usually brief, and theres not as much of it as one might hope. And if youre looking for a lot of gore, look elsewhere. With the exception of a few interesting moments (exploding nuns), the blood and guts are kept to a minimum.

The cast does an adequate job considering the level of Film theyre in, although most seem doomed to toil in B-Movies for the duration of their careers. The standout is the Films star, Olivia Bonamy. Clad in red leather and sporting a variety of weapons, Bonamy is able to look action-ready while still maintaining a ton of Sex appeal. She also does a respectable job in the action sequences (unlike, say, Kristy Swanson in Buffy) and seems to be having a campy good time. Its hard to gauge how much acting talent she actually has, as the Film simply doesnt require that much from its lead. But she does have a strong screen presence and knockout looks, so shes already ahead of the game.

Overall, Mallory will most likely be a disappointment for those looking for high art or a top-flight genre Film. But if youve lowered your expectations and simply want a few laughs and something to watch while you eat a bag of popcorn, then this may be the movie for you.

UFO: I Chat with the Real King Kong

Cant you ever get off that antique you call a computer?

It wasnt my wife it was Xrytspet. My wife says that my computer is too up-to-date, too expensive, and too available. She never calls it an antique.

I didnt turn my head. I said, Scram, Xrytspet!

She said, Writing about King Kong?

Scram!

I can take you to Skull Island.

I said, There is no Skull Island. There is no King Kong. Scram!

She said, I can get you there in a minute.

The next thing I knew we were on the beach at Skull Island. A heavy fog hovered over us and the surf was swishing up over my feet. I said, Couldnt you at least get us on land, Xrytspet?

Sorry! she said. A few steps and youll be out of the water.

I said, Now what? I cant see a thing.

A bearded man came out of the fog. He wore a Panama hat, a scraggly red shirt, and torn britches that were faded by the sun from a deep blue to a dull gray. I said, Who are you?

Xrytspet said, This is Jonathan Hawthorne. He is our interpreter.

Interpreter? Why do we need an interpreter, Xrytspet?

So that you can talk with King Kong. My language module does not include the animal dialects. I didnt think I would need it. I can shoot back to Fenton and get it but that would take me a second but you would have to wait for eons. By the time I got back, you would be long gone with that short meaningless lifetime of yours.

I said, You watched Men in Black didnt you, Xrytspet?

What else is there to do at your place? So I watched it. But the Bug was right.

I shook hands with Jonathan Hawthorne. I said, Im sorry we disturbed you. She thinks that King Kong is real.

He said, And you think that creature is real? He pointed at Xrytspet.

I said, Youll get use to her. If you want her to change her appearance, just ask her. You know how women are.

He said, Over the years Ive learned to leave things as they are. They can get worse, you know.

Gradually the sun cleared the fog and we co uld see the jungle. I said, I thought there was a big stockade here to keep Kong out of the village.

Jonathan said, Youve seen the movie. But think about it, Jarhead. If King Kong can climb the Empire State building, holding a girl in one hand and swinging his fist at airplanes with the other, dont you think he could climb a 30 foot wall.

Xrytspet said, Jonathan, you are getting to know Taylor Jones, the hack writer.

Ignoring the insults I said, So, where is he?

Jonathan pointed towards the mountains. Up there!

I said Lets go home, Xrytspet. Im not much for climbing.

Zap! We all three are in the mountains and there is King Kong sitting on a log, his big rump hanging over the e dge like a down pillow. Our size was so small that he didnt even notice we were there.

Jonathan took a big stick and smashed it down on King Kongs toe. Kong looked down, offered Jonathan a finger, and lifted him up to eye level. Jonathan yelled down, Shoot!

With what? I didnt bring a canon.

Xrytspet said, Idiot! Ask your questions.

I yelled, King Kong! I would like to meet your family.

Jonathan translated and King Kong answered in a voice not proportional to his size. I took my hands off my ears and heard him say, Kala Topa rak rakka rotofock.

Xrytspet said, They are on vacation on an Island called Kala Topa.

I said, Why did we hire an interpreter if you can speak Kong?< /p>

She said, I didnt know I could until he spoke. I think that one of my modules practiced on the way out here. You can never trust a module. Next question.

I said, Xrytspet, ask him how old he is.

She did and he answered, Kina lacka knowatol.

Xrytspet said, He doesnt know. But he is 320 earth years old and is still in his teens relative to earthlings like you.

I said, Now we are getting somewhere. Here we have something for all mankind. Its like the fountain of youth. All we need to find out is what he has for breakfast that makes him live so long. This is a worthwhile trip. Im grateful to you, Xrytspet.

Xrytspet said, You dont want to know what he eats. Now lets get out of here before he finishes that snack I brought him.

A piece of Jonathans foot fell right next to me. Kong picked it up with two fingers and delicately dropped it into his mouth. That was the last bit of Jonathan.

We ran.

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Movie Review)

Jim Carrey's breakout role, Ace Ventura is one of the funniest films of the 1990s. Written by the former In Living Color writer himself, the film centers around an oddball kook of a lead character who investigates missing pets. If you enjoy Jim Carrey's brand of humor (and it's not for everyone), then you'll love Ace Ventura. A bit more mainstream than Dumb And Dumber, it's less ridiculous in concept (with the exception of a man employed as a pet detective). If you know how to laugh, then you'll be hard-pressed to avoid doing so while watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Jim Carrey stars in the role of Ace Ventura, a Miami-based pet detective who has an unusual ability to relate to animals of every kind. For the most part, Carrey spends his days searching for lost and stolen pets. But when the Miami Dolphin mascot turns up missing, the Dolphin front office enlists Ventura's aid in finding the culprit.

With the help of Dolphins employee Melissa Robinson (Courtene y Cox) and law enforcement buddy Emilio (Tone Loc), Ace searches the whole of Miami in an effort to recapture the kidnapped dolphin. But along the way, he butts heads with Miami PD Lt. Lois Einhorn (Sean Young). When Ace discovers that the master criminal is a former member of the last Dolphins championship team, he must uncover the person's identity if he hopes to find the mascot (leading to one of the more hilarious sequences in the film, when Carrey follows around the former players, searching for a ring with a missing stone). However, the stakes of the investigation are raised when the same perpetrator kidnaps Dan Marino before the Super Bowl. Now, it's up to Ace Ventura to save the football season for the Miami Dolphins

Long before his other starring roles, Jim Carrey burst onto the Hollywood radar with this cult classic smash hit. Ace Ventura is utterly ridiculous, but the Movie thrives on the back of Carrey's unique talents. Not since Robin Williams has a comedian of such limitless energy and ability hit the big screen. Ace Ventura showcases the best of Carrey's talents and accurately embodies (he wrote it) his realm of humor. The constant antics of the film's hero make for good comedic exchange between Carrey and Young as their two characters battle against each other.

Strange and over-the-top, Ace Ventura hit the big screen as a unique oddity that many have since attempted to replicate. But few actors have the multi-faceted talents of Jim Carrey, and that makes Ace Ventura a rare film indeed. Unlike Wayne's World, this is one 1990s comedy that hasn't lost its comedic luster with the passing of time. It's just as funny today as when first released - if not more hilarious. It's this timeless quality of its comedy that makes Ace Ventura: Pet Detective a definite must-see film

Dawson's Creek (Season 5) DVD Review

Nominated for 12 Teen Choice Awards in its five-year (six season) run, including Best Drama Series, Dawson's Creek quickly built an extensive cult following. A surprise smash hit for the enterprising WB network, the show initiated a successful string of numerous original series for WB such as Angel (1999), Gilmore Girls (2000), and Smallville (2001). Set in the fictional township of Capeside, Massachusetts, the series was nonetheless filmed almost entirely on location in Wilmington, North Carolina (although the opening theme song, I Don't Want To Wait, is written and performed by Massachusetts native Paula Cole). Mutual friend Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson) is part of their clique, as are newcomers Jennifer Jen Lindley (Michelle Williams), Andrea Andie McPhee (Meredith Monroe), and Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith). Together, the friends form the basis of a teen soap opera, complete with high drama, curiosity, and bits of comic relief. Know for its intelligent subject matter, clever dialogue, and no-holds-barred tackling of issues, Dawson's Creek made most of its cast overnight celebrities

The Dawson's Creek (Season 5) DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere The Bostonians in which Joey begins her first semester at Wor thington. Taking a writing class, she writes her first essay about her relationship with Dawson, prompting the professor to tell her the two have a great future ahead of them. The Top 10 Sports Movies of All Time

There have been thousands of sports movies throughout the years. Some have been absolute crap and most are mediocre at best, but there are that select few that remain deep-seated in our memories. Those movies not only invoke our passion of sports, they manage to cross over and teach us greater life lessons. They teach us the importance of hard work and learning from our mistakes. They teach us that the impossible can come true. Thats what I consider a great sports movie. Well, either that or it has to be really funny.

Below are my Top 10 sports movies of all time. There are some popular movies missing either because I dont think they are as good as everyone else, or because I havent seen them.

10. Major League - This one falls under the comedy category. Willie Mays Hays, Jake Taylor, Pedro Cerano, Rick Vaughn, and Jake Taylor somehow manage to band together to win the pennant in spite of their owner. Its not the best comedy ever, but its certainly th e best sports comedy ever. Major League 2 is equally as good. Lets pretend that Major League 3 was never made.

9. Remember the Titans The best part about this flick is that it shows how sports can transcend society. The unification of the black and white high school is successful only because of the bonds formed between the two schools on the football field.

8. Rudy How can you not be inspired watching this? No one believed in this kid and he not only got into ND, he made the football team. Most people would have given up long before Rudy, and it is a testament to his character for enduring and being able to live his dream.

7. Miracle I am a huge Miracle on Ice fan so I was a bit skeptical about the movie. Usually they find a way to screw up history. But amazingly, Disney stuck to the story nearly perfectly. By involving everyone from the original team in the making of the movie, including the late Herb Brooks, they made sure the movie was accurate. I love having Al Michaels call the action; it feels like I'm actually watching the real game!

6. He Got Game This film chronicles high school senior Jesus Shuttlesworth, the best college basketball prospect in the country, as he deals with pressures from his father and girlfriend who are trying to influence his decision for their own benefit. Ray Allen is the perfect choice for Shuttlesworth because Allen WAS Shuttlesworth in real life a few years before that. How many actors can make that claim?

5. Eight Men Out The best part of the movie was that they didn't try to dumb it down for Hollywood - they made a point to follow the story as it was told in the book. This meant that it had the feel of a documentary, which is probably why this movie isn't that popular, but true sports fans will appreciate that what they are getting is close to the truth.

4. Field of Dreams - This movie will appeal to sports fans and non sports fans alike. Sports fans will lo ve how they work in Shoeless Joe and other classic greats. Non sports fans will appreciate the fantastic journey that Ray takes to build the field of his dreams. If you build it, he will come is one of the great movie quotes of all time.

3. When We Were Kings I'm too young to remember Ali as a fighter, but this movie truly shows his greatness. Forman is the superior fighter, but Ali uses his wit to defeat Forman in The Rumble in the Jungle, one of the greatest fights ever.

2. Hoosiers If you ever need to get pumped up, watch this movie. Nothing seems impossible after seeing Coach Norman Dale lead his team to the Indiana state championship.

1. The Natural I own the DVD of The Natural and Ive seen it more times than I can remember. Yet, anytime I see it on TV I immediately freeze and watch. It captivates me like few movies do. Roy Hobbs gets that second chance that we all want. He had the talent to be the best pitcher ever, but had it taken away by a mysterious shooter. Years later, he reappears as an outfielder and leads his team to the top of the league with his famous Wonder Boy bat.

Free Movies

In life, there is no such thing as a free lunch, but amazingly one can watch free Movies. Free Movies are those Movies that are made for free distribution or have entered the public domain. Sometimes free Movies may be downloaded from the Internet, which may be done legally or illegally.

Initially, this business started with free Movie clips. Movie clips may be screened in a theatre before or after a full-length feature or advertised on certain sites on the Internet, but technology has changed. Movie players can now be downloaded free of charge over the Internet, including the Apple Quick Time Player, The Windows Media Player and The Real Media Player.

Such software can be used to play free Movies from the Internet. There are hundreds of sites that offer Movies for a small fee. Why spend a fortune on Movie tickets when one can watch their favorite Movies at a fraction of the price from the comfort of your personal computer? Film directories like Scour and Ifilm are like virtual multiplexes. The advent of free Movie sites have made online Movie watching a popular activity.

A good place to down load free Movies is at ibiblio.org and archive.org. Both these sites have a growing collection of public domain Movies that can be easily downloaded. It is legal to down load these Movies as their copyrights have expired and hence they are in the public domain. An example is the classic Frank Capra film, Its a Wonderful Life, which was termed as a free Movie in the public domain for the last several years since its copyright had not been renewed.

Some of the popular free Movie sites are Watch Free Movies Online, Shared Movies, Free Movies Now, Movie Download World, 123 Movie Download, Cinema Download, Netbroadcaster.com, and Singingfish. Some low fees sites include CinemaNow.com and Movie Flix.com. Downloading a Movie with a broadband connection requires only a few minutes. The flipside to the free Movie phenomenon is that it has made Movie piracy easy.

The Napster experience of music piracy is threatening the motion picture industry in what is known as the Wrapster phenomenon. Microsofts new operating system will have strong anti-Movie< /a> -piracy features to prevent illegal downloads.

There are a lot of sites on the market offering free downloads. The burden is on the customer to determine whether the Movie is a legal or pirated copy. Sometimes, claims on the Internet maybe false. Most DVDs cannot be downloaded from the net without paying a fee. Only those Movies released into the public domain such as when a director has not sought a copyright can be actually downloaded free of cost.
