A Veteran Cast Propels ABC's The Nine Television Show

What attracts viewers to a new show? Is it the premise? The quality of the previews? Perhaps even the frequency of the previews? The show's name may play a factor and early reviews can influence people to tune into a new show. All of these factors contribute to a new show's popularity. However, nothing can be more attractive than a familiar face.

Established Television stars act as a magnet for new viewers. How many times have you heard: Hey! That's the guy from... or I didn't know she had a new show! People get excitied when they see familiar stars that they have enjoyed in other series. There is a level of trust and legitimacy that a star brings to a Television show.

This star-factor may be a huge asset for ABC's The Nine, debuting in the Fall of 2006. This series features not just one familiar face, but several Television veterans who have graced a multitude of former shows. Let's take a look:

Actor Tim Daly is well known for his starring role in Wings. He has appeared in several other TV shows including the short lived Fugitive remake. Daly also popped up in a lead role in the Steven King miniseries Storm of the Century.

Kim Raver has a starring role on the hugely successful Fox drama 24. But she was a regular on an even huger series than that: PBS' Sesame Street. Raver has also appeared in Third Watch and a series of feature films.

Scott Wolf is best known for his part in Party Of Five as well as the current hit Everwood. As a child, Wolf appeared on the children's show Kids Incorporated as well as Saved By The Bell.

Chi McBride has appeared in a number of Television shows such as Boston Public and House, MD. He also has a slew of feature films under his belt including: The Terminal, I, Robot, Narc, and Undercover Brother.

With such an impressive cast, The Nine stands a chance of not just surviving its first season, but blossoming into a successful series for ABC.

Along Came Polly (Movie Review)

Over the past decade, Ben Stiller has displayed a propensity for producing blockbuster comedies, and Along Came Polly is a fun and enjoyable comedy. Although not on the hilarity level of There's Something About Mary, Meet The Parents, or Zoolander - Along Came Polly is nonetheless a funny film (and it's certainly better than the horrid Duplex fiasco with Drew Barrymore). Ben Stiller again plays the role of the nice guy, but this time with a neurotic twist. As a result, the audience still likes his character, just perhaps not as much as some of Stiller's previous roles. But with some hilarious comedy sequences and good one-liners, Along Came Polly manages to keep its viewers entertained quite nicely

Ben Stiller plays the role of Reuben Feffer, an insurance man who avoids risk in every aspect of his life. Measuring everything from the probability of falling through a sidewalk grate to the odds of a piano falling on one's head, he calculates every decision he makes. Fol lowing his wedding to Lisa Kramer (Debra Messing), Reuben is devastated when (avoiding the risk of scuba diving), he catches his new bride having an affair with a scuba instructor on their honeymoon. Forced to reevaluate his life, Reuben determines that he needs to take on more risk in his life.

With the help of his friend Sandy, Reuben gets out into the public arena once again, where he runs into former junior high school classmate Polly Prince (Jennifer Aniston). Polly is the exact opposite of Reuben in almost every way, and he decides to pursue her so as to have more fun in his life. Everything goes well until Lisa returns hoping to win Reuben back, and Polly discovers that Reuben ran a risk analysis on their relationship, determining that Polly was a good risk to take. Now Reuben must decide what to do with his life

Jennifer Aniston, in her role as Polly Prince, turns in another great performance as a leading character's girlfriend (Office Space and Bruce Alm ighty). Playing a character whose attitude, demeanor, and life are the total opposite of Stiller's, the two Hollywood mainstays are able to save an otherwise adequately written screenplay. Some of the more hilarious scenes involve Reuben's has-been actor friend Sandy Lyle (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who continues to live off of his short-lived fame as the kid with the bagpipes in a 1980's Movie similar to The Breakfast Club. In one scene, Sandy also sharts (a fart that's a little bit more than a fart), forcing Reuben to leave a party prematurely.

Overall, Along Came Polly is a fun and entertaining film that's well worth the time spent. Although Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston have both made better films, it does have its high points. Movie-goers will find this to be a good, light-hearted romantic comedy with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller stealing the show. Because of its headline talent and some good one-liners, Along Came Polly makes the cut as a highly recommended, must-see Movie

Titanic (DVD) Review

Nominated for 14 Academy Awards and winner of 11 including Best Picture, Titanic became a worldwide phenomenon upon its release in 1997. Written and directed by James Cameron, the producer behind such hits as Terminator 2 and True Lies, the film chronicles the tragic 1912 sinking of the Titanic on its maiden voyage while interweaving a classic love story. At 194 minutes, its probably the longest commercial blockbuster in recent memory. Apparently, the sinking of the ship mirrors the real life timeline of the original sinking of the Titanic and thats the reason for the three-hour plus running time (or at least, thats what Ive heard). Nevertheless, unless youre absolutely disgusted by overly idealistic love stories, its a film well worth watching.

Titanic centers around the life of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), a young woman onboard the celebrated launch of Titanic, the worlds largest luxury ship and a vessel believed to be indestructible. Accompanied by her soci al-climbing mother Ruth (Frances Fisher) and her arrogantly wealthy fianc Caledon Hockley (Billy Zane), Rose is bound for the beauty and sophistication of Continental Europe. But her trip, and her life, take an unexpected turn when she encounters Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a vagabond artist with no money, zero social status, and a zest for life. Against the wishes of Ruth, Rose and Jack fall in love, incurring the wrathful vengeance of Caledon. But, in the end, only a disaster of epic proportions can break the couple apart.

With a number of standout performances by a star-studding cast, including previous Academy Award winner Kathy Bates in the role of new money heiress Molly Brown, Titanic is a truly memorable film. The scope and opulence of the fabled ship is simply breathtaking, and the costumes and props form a brilliant kaleidoscope of images from the past. Although an overblown and idealistic teenage love story was the true focus of the film, Titanic create d enough action and suspense during the sinking to keep viewers who arent interested in such plots interested. Inevitably, most viewers will envision themselves in the midst of such circumstances, wondering how they would react. Parts of the film are narrated from the perspective of a present day speaker, and the flashback sequences are combined to good effect. Overall, it makes for an outstanding film.

James Horner composed the musical score for Titanic, and his efforts are one reason the film experienced such widespread success. With a number of brilliant and original scores already to his credit Field Of Dreams (1989), Legends Of The Fall (1994), and Braveheart (1995) all come to mind Horner expands upon his unique voice by creating a soundtrack that combines the lazy breeze of an Iowa cornfield with the majestic plains of Scotland. In addition, Celine Dion provides the breakout performance of her career with the hit single My Heart Will Go On, which in the Movie is paired with the most famous scene from the film in which Jack and Rose stand on the bow of the Titanic and pretend to fly. Not surprisingly, Ive learned that in the years since, many tourists have lost their lives trying to mimic them. So I dont recommend you try that! But I do advise watching Titanic. If you can sit through the sappy, melodramatic love scenes and the accompanying dialogue, youll be blown away by the special effects, the costumes, the set, and the soundtrack.

NYPD Blue (DVD) Review

Nominated for 84 Emmys and 13 Golden Globes, including 5 for Best TV Series - Drama in its first five years, NYPD Blue is one of the best prime time dramas in television history. It's also one of the most talked about and controversial as well. Prior to its series premiere in Fall 1993, NYPD Blue found itself embroiled in a nationwide controversy surrounding proper TV programming and calls for government censorship. Its opening tagline This police drama contains adult language and scenes with partial nudity. Viewer discretion is advised, caused a quite a stir before the public had even seen the first episode. Family rights groups maligned the ABC network for airing the show, but when NYPD Blue turned out to be a mild show by conventional standards, the massive publicity only served to instantly propel the police drama to the top of the Nielsen ratings, where it lived out 12 successful seasons

NYPD Blue follows the exploits of a New York City Police Department unit as they deal with the high-stress trials and travails indicative of the world's most demanding police work. During the show's 12 seasons, a number of characters transferred in and out of the department, but Det. Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) was the one constant. The brash, steel-gut demeanor of Sipowicz set the tone for the show, and most episodes revolve around Sipowicz and his various partners (whose mild-mannered temperaments help soften his oftentimes brash methods). Det. John Kelley (David Caruso) was the first of these partners, followed by Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) The brainchild of Steven Bochco (former writer for Columbo and creator of such hit series as Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, and Doogie Howser, M.D.), NYPD Blue raised the bar for prime-time police dramas, and along with contemporary peer Law & Order, the show defined the genre during the decade of the 1990s

The NYPD Blue DVD features a number of dramatic episodes including the series premiere in which De t. Sipowicz is brought up before Internal Affairs due to harassing conduct toward Alfonse Giardella. Meanwhile, his wife is pushing to finalize their divorce, but Sipowicz gets shot by Giardella in the process. Now, Det. Kelley must apply pressure to the local mafia to help him catch the perpetrator Other notable episodes from Season 1 include Oscar, Meyer, Weiner in which Sipowicz and Kelley investigate the murder of an entire family of wealthy elites as well as a stolen Academy Award, and Serge the Concierge in which the two detectives find a dead body in a dumpster and trace it back to a conspiracy hatched by a hotel owner and her concierge employee

First ever images from ResidentEvil:Extinction, which hits theaters next year have surfaced. Resident Evil:Extinction also stars Mike Epps, Sienna Guillory, Iain Glen, Oded Fehr, Ashanti Douglas, Debra Marshall, Ali Larter, and Chris Egan. In the film...Milla Jovovich is back as Alice, and she's running with a new pack of humans, leading a caravan that's cutting through the Nevada desert on a long trek to Alaska. Hunted by the minions of the perpetually scheming Dr. Isaacs, Alice has zombies hungry for her flesh, and lab rats hungry for her blood...while Alice is hungry for only one thing...Revenge.

Resident:Evil Extinction is current shooting in New Mexico and is expected to wrap within the next few months. A fourth Resident Evil film is expected to follow the upcoming third movie titled Resident Evil:Extinction. No official title has been leaked as of yet regarding the fourth film, but it is expected to be set in Toyko Japan and will possibly be the finale of the s eries, even though rumors persist the Resident Evil film series might possibly stretch as long as 7 films. The characters of Albert Wesker and Chris Redfield have also been rumored to possibly be in the third film.

Movie Review The Grass Is Greener (1960)

As aristocratic a romantic comedy as it gets in which Cary Grant, raised dirt poor as Archie Leach in Bristol, England, plays Earl Victor Rhyall, a British nobleman living in a salmon pink castle with his wife Lady Hilary Rhyall (played by Deborah Kerr). The palpable Grant-Kerr chemistry that made AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957) such a success is here at play too and probably the chief factor that somewhat salvages this otherwise forgettable flick.

The Rhyalls are a part of the British nobility but their finances could be better. In order to make ends meet, Hilary is raising mushrooms to sell and they allow bus loads of tourists to visit their castle for a fee.

The unbelievable Plot Point 1 comes early in the film when Robert Mitchum (playing the brash American oil millionaire Charles Delacro), pretending he is a tourist who lost his way around the castle, walks into the private residence of the Rhyalls to express his adoration for Hilary. And surprisingly enough , Hilary returns his advances on the spot and within fifteen minutes of their first hello they are kissing in front of the Rhyall fireplace. Seconds later Victor walks into the room, thinking Charles is a photographer sent by a magazine. But soon he is up to speed with this unwanted intrusion to their privacy.

Hilary-Charles romance charges full speed ahead when Hilary travels to London on the pretense of a hairdresser appointment. That's when Victor's old flame Hattie Durant (played by Jean Simmons) steps in trying to win Victor back. The tangled up cat's cradle of commitments, lies and betrayal among the fabulous four reaches its crescendo when Victor, instead of divorcing Hilary, decides to stand by his woman and invites Charles to an old fashioned duel.

Victor gets wounded in the gun duel but later on it turns out he had instructed his butler Sellers to shoot him in the arm for some dramatic effect. Yet having proved the desperate extend to which he is ready to go to defend her wife, Victory wins back Hilary's heart.

A harmless little rom-com with great acting by all four prominent stars and a story line that is not easy to believe in. Like many Films which were adapted straight from successful stage plays in the 40s and the 50s, THE GRASS IS GREENER is also a very busy talking heads picture. Put it on mute and you'll miss 99% of it.

A 6 out of 10, and another point for the great salmon pink castle.
