America's Infatuation with Hollywood Stars

I am sure we all are infatuated with Hollywood stars. From the time of the birth of the Movie capital of the world, Hollywood, we cannot take our eyes off these charming people. They can even be called the Royal Family of America if this is not too insolent. Unfortunately, the infatuation with Hollywood Stars grows into an obsession for some fans. These fans transform their homes into shrines to their favorite celebrity. Their lives become centered on just one idea the Hollywood Stars.

Hollywood is not trying to prevent this ugly situation either. In fact, Hollywood does everything it can to promote this fascination with Hollywood stars. Both young and old actors are subjected to this. Even the dead Hollywood stars cannot rest in peace because they are constantly the subject of gossip.

On the W orld-Wide-Web, you can find information on how to track a star or simply some gossips concerning the personal life of the Hollywood star (if the Hollywood star succeeds in having one at all). We may say that Internet nurtures this obsession in many people.

You can read on the net where a Hollywood star lives, where a Hollywood star goes shopping, which night club a Hollywood star visits, where a Hollywood star goes to church, where a Hollywood star is laid to rest!

The famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre sidewalk is a place where many Hollywood stars have eternalized their handprints and footprints in the cement. This is one of the obsessed fans favorite places for tourism.

Hollywood stars realize that they have become legends when they are invited to leave their footprint in the cement. Hollywood stars as Groucho Marx and John Wayne have preferred to represent their personalities by leaving a style mark. Such style marks are Groucho Marx's cigar and John Wayn e's fist.

Tourist agencies offer tours around the Hollywood stars homes. I was frankly surprised when I heard that some Hollywood stars specialize in presenting scenes of celebrity scandals and deaths. If you wish, you can visit the house where Marilyn Monroe died, where Sharon Tate was murdered, and where O.J.Simpson was arrested.

I almost feel obliged to add that there are tourist agencies, which offer visits to graves of Hollywood stars. They give profound information how to find such notabilities as Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Spencer Tracy or Gregory Peck.

If do not succeed to come across a real Hollywood star or you do not like the idea of visiting a grave, Hollywood offers wax museums for you. There next to each other are placed Clint Eastwood and Spider-Man!

Very attractive turn out to be the Hollywood stars of the 1940's, 50's and early 60's. This can be explained by the fact that these decades had been a more glamorized time and then the Ho llywood stars were compared with royalties.

Hollywood was a completely different world in the past, Hollywood stars either were different. During the 1940's, 50's and early 60's the Hollywood stars were just a part of the studio system, signed up to the studios and protected by them. However, scandals were bursting even then. This was a romantic time. This was the time when the bad guys wore black hats and the good guys wore white hats. This was the time when the man stood up when the lady entered the room.

Is Tom Cruise the Victim of Celebrity Blackballing?

OK, granted Tom Cruise isn't really TwentySomething, but he's dating Katie Holmes and I want to write this article, so let's take the stretch. Despite claims made to the contrary by the star's business partner, Paula Wagner, the word is that Cruise got canned for his recently outlandish conduct. Tom had a Rick James moment on Oprah's couch, as he professed his love for the lovely and much younger Holmes last year. But, while this and many other Cruise moments admittedly seem out of character, strange behavior has never been an entertainment taboo. So, why is Paramount parting with 'Ethan Hawk,' its biggest money maker?

Despite opening at almost $48 million Mission Impossible III was ultimately not as profitable as Paramount would have liked. While many cite Cruise's behavior as the reason, I'd say it was the anticlimactic, disappointing ending drafted for War of the Worlds. I guess anything sounds better with Morgan Freeman narrating but, come on- the aliens catch a cold? Cruise undoubtedly made enemies in Hollywood when his profession of faith in Scientology led him to publicly shun the use of psychiatrics; with it stars like Brooke Shields and probably half the Hollywood Hills who use drugs to treat emotional or psychological problems. Also some people probably don't know what to make of his public appearance on BET doing a popular hip hop dance.

Cruise's comments have likely left many in the entertainment industry offended and Paramount seems to be threatened by Tom's unapologetically open and overjoyed antics as of late, but there is nothing, so far, to suggest that Cruise is any weirder than other celebrities. Stars with levels of success like Cruise are entitled to their little eccentricities; practicing an obscure Religion and having a crazy in l ove relationship hardly seems to warrant concern.

Performers Regret

Tonight I watched a documentary on Jerry Sienfeld by Jerry Sienfeld. It was an inside look at the inner turmoil of a comedian. It documented the struggles of the comedians to write new material, keep it fresh, try it on audiences and then to perform in a one hour + show. It was cool to see Jerry forget his line or his joke and freeze on stage. It was insightful to see the other comedians give him advice or commiserate with him over his feeling that he didnt quite have it any more. He wasnt in the flow of the material much of the time and it was such a relief to hear them admit that to one another. He was admitting how long it took to get the Gig right, and to make it look easy.

In the TV news field, people rarely have a bad day. Theyre always perfect and say everything correctly. They have perfect make up and have memorized their lines and after theyre through, go on to their perfect lives. Okay, Im just joking! I know its not true, but its rare to hear a talent admit to anyone that they were off or not exactly on that particular day so my own doubts about my performance dont find a voice.

This week I appeared on one of the local TV stations commenting on the recent story of whether working women make lousy wives. I was excited about the topic because of course I have lots to say about it. I could extemporaneously speak about this topic for an hour and still be excited to express my wealth of wisdom on this topic I know so well. (YES.. sometimes we DO make lousy wives but not all the time, and most of the time, were working hard to please everyone!)

During the newscast, I was squashed in between a plane crash, some local crime buzz, and some other hard news stories. Im used to getting about 3-4 minutes on a news segment and forgot to ask before I went on the air. So without me knowing what hit me, my segment was over in about a minute thirty, and I was DONE. OFF the air. Finished. Caput. Gone. Adios. You get the pi cture. The anchor ran back to the news desk, with my jaw hanging down to the ground.

Okay, Im being a bit over dramatic. I was fine. for a minute. But after I regained my bearings, I realized that I had just bombed the segment! I was ticked at myself and angry that I didnt say more brilliant tips on how to survive a current marriage. I was horrified that I didnt give the advice about making the time people have with their kids quality instead of quantity. I was upset I didnt dazzle the anchor, and have her tell me that shed love to get together with me to chat sometime, like they often do. Not today. As soon as we closed the segment she was gone in a flash, and I left thinking that I bombed.

A bit paranoid you say? Perhaps I am, but at this point, Ive done enough TV segments to know when I hit a home run and know when Im average and know when I stink. I didnt stink today, but I just floated above average today. My hair and makeup checked out fine (according to my mother who loves me no matter what I do and who called 19 of her friends and told them to watch), and the segment did manage to look like we were having a friendly chat, but I didnt pull off the goal of the segment, which was to offer solid tips for the viewers. The anchor who was the consummate professional, was lively on the air and acted like I offered some great wisdom.

Needless to say, this inner turmoil that I now feel will feed me to better prepare and practice for my next time on the air. Ill get the call inviting me to be on the air. Then Ill write an article on the topic that they request, probably a few hours before show time. Rush to get dressed, but this time, show up with my 3 main points drilled into my head, ready to spew out of my mouth regardless of what she asks me. I probably wont have much time to prepare, just like today, so Ill know if I get the 3 points out, I was successful.

Jerry Sienfeld gave me confidence today. He gave me the confi dence to admit when its not in the flow and when it doesnt quite work. He gave me the strength to keep working hard until the segments are all hit out of the park. He also gave me the motivation that even if a Performer Regrets the segment they just did, there is always another show tomorrow and the day after. The key is to never give up, always keep trying, and go easy on yourself when you feel you bombed. Even the best Performers have off days.

So I learned? No more Regrets! Thanks Jerry!

Ten MustSee Horror Flicks

What scares you? Noises in the dark? Bats? Bees? Sharks? Are you scared of strangers or squirrels, or maybe even your own shadow?

So what scares you? I don't know, but for those who like to be scared, here's my countdown of the top ten best Horror Movies out there.

Coming in at Number 10...

The Exorcist

The Exorcist just narrowly makes it into my top 10 of Horror, primarily because I don't find it to be nearly as scary as it's been billed to be. What makes The Exorcist a top 10 of Horror is that it's just plain fun. A child speaking in tongues, spinning her head around like a whirlygig, projectile vomiting pea soup. Who can resist such supernatural fun? The Exorcist reminds me that you can't take Horror too seriously all the time. Sure, I like to be scared, but Horror is also about having fun, suspending your disbelief for a few hours. The movie also has a superbly spooky soundtrack -- great for a few chills.

Number 9...

The Blob

W hich one? you ask.

My answer: It doesn't matter. The original and the remake are both great. The original black and white version could just as easily be listed as one of the top 10 campiest Movies, but who can forget the old man with his arm encased in goo, being eaten alive. Hey -- this was the fifties -- classic, campy, terrifying fun, and what's great about it is that if you don't feel like screaming, you can go ahead and laugh your way through it. If, however, campy 50s sci-fi/Horror isn't your thing, then substitute the remake. Great special effects update a classic without ruining the campiness.

Number 8...

Audrey Rose

There aren't any monsters in this one. No ghosts, no ghoulies, no creepy-crawlies. So why did I put Audrey Rose on my top 10 list? Because Audrey Rose is absolutely chilling in concept: if you die a tragic death, are you doomed to relive it again and again through nightmares in another life? If Audrey Rose doesn't make you shiver , nothing will.

Tops in creepiness: Audrey Rose burns her hands on cool, wet glass.

Number 7...

The Thing (80s remake)

You're isolated from the rest of the world; outside the complex, the wind screams. You won't last long on your own, but inside the complex, the thing is loose, and someone in your small group is not who he or she appears to be. A wonderful remake, The Thing is the stuff of nightmares. Suspenseful and horrifying, this is not one to watch alone at night. The special effects are wonderful; watch as the husky transforms into the thing.

Number 6...

The Mummy

More funny than frightening, The Mummy works any way you look at it. Brendan Fraser is perfect as the swashbuckling, and sometimes bumbling hero. Fraser and his leading lady, Rachel Weisz have incredible chemistry and they kept me chuckling throughout. The special effects of The Mummy are top notch. I particularly liked the face-shaped sandstorm -- very creative.

My single pet peeve: If cats keep the creature at bay, why not surround yourself with cats?

Answer: Because then there would be not movie.

Halfway there at Number 5...

Scanners

Before I say anything about the movie, I must say that you just have to love Michael Ironside as he plays yet another evil-doer. He always gets the job done, and he does it superbly in Scanners. Taking its inspiration from children of Thalidomide, children born deformed after mothers had taken Thalidomide during pregnancy. In Scanners, the children are born as scanners -- telepathic, psychokinetic misfits. It was a side effect of drugs taken by their mothers during pregnancy -- an inadvertent side-effect...or was it? Now they're being studied, and exploited. Scanners plays on the not-so-paranoid fears of a generation. It's an underappreciated movie that's well worth a watch.

Number 4...

Night Breed

Darkly humorous and delightfully subversive, Night Breed de finitely ranks among my favorite Horror Films. While on the quest for Midian, the place of his dreams, Boone, our protagonist, stumbles onto a mystical, mythical underworld. Both terrifying and fascinating, Boone is drawn into this self-contained society. Based on the novel, Cabal, by Clive Barker, Night Breed perfectly captures the surrealism that is Barker's forte. Dizzying and disorienting, Midian is a place where reality and nightmares converge. This movie is, at heart, a study of the duality of human nature, light and dark, good and evil, civilized and wild.

Closing in with Number 3...

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

This is classic, Grade B Horror all the way. The acting is bad, the effects are terrible, and yet it makes it into my top three. I think old Horror Movies tend to be the best since they don't rely so heavily on special effects to score their scare. They have to earn their spookiness with lighting, plot (even a bad one), and sound. Don't be Afr aid... makes great use of sounds, particularly the sibilants as the demons call the name of the heroine Sally over and over again. What's all the better is that nobody believes Sally until it's much, much too late...

Number 2...

The Shining

Wow. There's little more to say about The Shining. Okay, so there's a lot to say about this movie. Jack Nicholson makes the movie work as well as it does. I couldn't imagine another actor playing the role. For sheer terror, few Horror Movies pack as much punch. Moody and shivery, The Shining is one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King novel out there. The long, empty corridors of the Overlook Hotel lend the perfect atmosphere to the Shining. Expanses of empty hallway metamorphose until they are painfully claustrophobic. The backdrop of silence is somehow overwhelming. Even the sound of Big Wheel tires through the empty hallways is strangely ominous. There is no escape as a family descends into the Horror of the Over look, as a man descends into the supernatural grip of madness. REDRUM.

Tops in Creepiness: Those two little girls

And my favorite...Number 1

Poltergeist

Who didn't get chills the first time the kitchen furniture was rearranged almost instantly by an unseen hand? Poltergeist is everything a great Horror movie should be -- creepy, startling, with just the right balance of awe and childlike wonder. I teetered between wild-eyed wonder and edge-of-my seat suspense during the entire two hours of Poltergeist. And what's wonderful about Poltergeist is that it holds up after multiple viewing. You can watch this one time and time again and it loses nothing. From Carol Ann's initial whispery conversation with the TV people, to the oft-quoted They're here, Poltergeist is the best of the best in Horror.

Music is also of great importance in Horror Films, and Poltergeist comes in ahead of most in this department as well. With an eerie, wordless tune sung in soprano, childlike voices, this one will chill even the most hardened Horror fan.

So run, quick, to your local video store. It's getting dark, and the witching hour is approaching. Come home, video tucked safely under your arm, and pop it into the VCR. Curl up on your sofa under a toasty blanket, and settle back for a night of thrills and chills.

And whatever you do, don't forget to leave a light on...

Nine Movies That Make You Want To Yell "Stop Saying That"

Movie moments are nice things to share with the people you care about. Most of those shared moments consist of Remember that one part when the guy with the thing and before they can finish youre interjecting with your own vague, Oh totally, I love that part! But occasionally this process extends beyond an inner circle and goes global in its reach. This is where a perfectly fine movie goes to the realm of annoying, because of our need to repeat the catchy lines contained within them. Here is a completely subjective list of movies that have been ruined by our need to copycat.

1. Austin Powers Oh behave. Remember that period after the movie when fairly normal people couldnt resist putting their pinkies in their mouth and incorporating the word shag into a sentence. Oh, thats right, no one wants to remember that. Thank god there were two more movies with the same jokes to remind us.

2. The Godfather A fantastic epic that spawned a generation of bad Marlon Brando impersonations. Sans cotton balls. The most overused, dumb line: Its nothing personal, its strictly business. Yeah, and Im the president of Uzbekistan. People that buy into and repeat this line must have forgotten that the same people who proscribed to this guff also chopped off a horse head and put it into someones bed.

3. Jerry Maguire What started with a nice moment between two deaf people signing in an elevator, You complete me, has somehow ended up with people saying to waiters at cheesy Italian Restaurants, You had me at our specials for tonight are. Lucky deaf people.

4. Napoleon Dynamite The newest entry, and along with The Godfather combines two elements of mimicry. You cant just say the line, you have to do it in the voice of the performer as well. How could this possibly go wrong?

5. Scarface Oh man, give me coke! Give me everything! And after that Im going to introduce you to my little friend and go down in a blaze of glory! Isnt drug dealing swell! All right, I know thats not the point, but ask any guy what their favorite movie is, and I guarantee not one of them is saying, You know that Out of Africa was pretty fricking good. Remember when Robert Redford said..... Oh, who am I kidding, Im a guy; this movie was perfect. Repeat Say hello to my little friend as much as you want.

6. Caddyshack Not for the lines that are said, but for the fact that nobody can remember what the lines are. If the lines were so memorable, why the hell are we constantly butchering them on the golf course?

7. Warriors All right this isnt a good movie, but saying Warriors, come out and plaayeeeaay is the equivalent of yelling Freebird at a concert.

8. Taxi Driver No ones looking at you. Stop pretending that someone is.

9. Forrest Gump Why did copying what a mentally retarded person had to say seem like a good idea? No, life isnt like a box of chocolates, most of the time we know what w ere getting.
