The Influence of Violent Movies on Our Society

Are movies these days being made too violent? What effect are they having on our society? Does the violence in these movies provoke normal people to commit random acts of violence?

Violence in films causing violence in real life depends on the film, but that is only my opinion. Some people think that if people watch a violent film it will cause them to act violent, on the other hand some people disagree with this totally.

In this essay I will be looking at both arguments and trying to come up with a conclusion, I will be looking at the film Mississippi Burning and some other films and TV shows which contain violence. Some people can get a buzz from watching violence on TV but people should know the scenes on screen are different from real life and shouldnt be copied.

In America when the film Natural Born Killers was released at cinemas, a teenager Nathan Martinez went to see the film ten times. One day he went home from watching the movie and killed his s tep-mum and half sister exactly the way the characters were murdered in the film. He even listened to the soundtrack straight after he had committed the murder. This is called copycat violence which people say can be brought on by these kind of violent films.

The other side of this argument though, is that this boy must have already had mental problems, he was obviously disturbed. He might have wanted to kill his step-mum and sister before he seen the film, this could have just given him an idea how to do it.

Researchers did tests on some children playing a game. Before the game, some of the children had watched a violent film and some has watched a non-violent action film. In the game if the players opponent lost they have them a blast of white noise, the player could choose how long the opponent heard the noise for and how loud it was. The researchers found that the children who had watched the violent film made their opponent listen to a louder noise for a lon ger period of time, the researchers said that this is proof that violent films leave people in a more aggressive state.

On the other hand people would say that people should still know the difference between right and wrong and probably wouldnt go out and hurt someone because they had seen a film.

People could watch violent films to actually get rid of their own anger. Watching someone else fighting could stop him or her from actually going out and doing it themselves.

Some people would say violence in real life has nothing to do with watching films; its about peoples backgrounds, such as the way they were brought up.

I dont think that violence in Mississippi Burning would cause violence in real life unless the person was seriously disturbed already, there is two different kinds of violent films, some films make violence look like fun such as Rush Hour 2 has lots of fighting, but doesnt show anyone being seriously hurt and this film is fiction, so peo ple know it is just a made-up story and it didnt really happen to anyone. If any films were going to cause violence in real life it would be these sorts of films.

The film Mississippi Burning is not too violent because it is non-fiction and the film only shows what really happened. If the violence wasnt shown, the message wouldnt get across, how bad life really was in 1963 in Mississippi. Film violence would have an impact on people who already display criminal behavior. If a murderer watched a violent film they would probably get ideas and go out and do something violent.

Also children are generally very gullible and will believe things they see on TV shows or cartoons. Some cartoons are very violent, even though we probably dont realize it.

Such as the cartoon Tom and Jerry which shows a cat chasing a mouse trying to kill it, the mouse usually gets revenge on the cat. They use guns, hit each other with objects, and trip each other up and lots of other vio lent acts. The cat always gets hurt but then always comes back on the screen and acts as normal even if he has supposedly been badly hurt or even killed, this could be extremely confusing for a child and could make them believe if they hurt someone or even kill someone, everything will just be as normal.

The responsibility belongs to the parent or care giver of the child to make sure they dont think in this way and that the child realizes the difference between fiction cartoons or shows and real life and that they mustnt copy off these shows.

It is normally children or mentally ill people who would go out and copy off movies, other people would realize the difference between cartoons or TV shows and the way things are in real life.

Overall I think that violence being caused by watching films or TV shows depends what the film/show is, who is watching it and what their background is.

The Shawshank Redemption (DVD) Review

Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, The Shawshank Redemption amazingly failed to win a single Oscar. Its amazing because its probably one of the top ten best films ever produced. Based on Stephen Kings short story Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the film transcends the typical intellectually and spiritually bankrupt Hollywood entertainment of the modern era with an onscreen artistry that is the closest well probably ever see to poetry in moving pictures. With masterful performances by Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, audience members will find themselves engrossed in a tragic story wrought with suspense at every turn

The Shawshank Redemption focuses on the life of Andy Dufresne (Robbins), a prominent banker convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Sent to Shawshank prison in the summer of 1947, the inmates bet on which of the new arrivals will be the first to crack. Ellis Red Redding (Freeman), an institutional fixture and the man who can provide anything for a price, puts his money on Andy. But much to his surprise, Andy doesnt make a sound

Over time, Andy and Red develop a close friendship, and Red procures a small rock hammer for Andy. As the years go by, he procures other items as well, the most interesting being Rita Hayworth. Red acquires a poster of the screen siren for Andy, and business continues as usual in Shawshank. Along the way, Andy ingratiates himself with the notorious prison guard Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown) and Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton). Putting his outside skills to good use, Andy provides tax advice and tax preparation services to guards not just at Shawshank, but other prisons as well.

Eventually, in exchange for a comprehensive prison library, he ends up running a massive money laundering operation for Norton leveraging prison labor in exchange for lucrative kickbacks. But all goes awry when Shawshanks newest prisoner, a young punk named Tommy (Gil Bellow s) comes forward with shocking information. Andy, whos spent twenty years in Shawshank prison, might be innocent after all The revelation ruins lives and destroys Andys prison sanctuary, but its Warden Norton and his associates who are ruined when the beautiful pin-up Raquel Welch reveals her hidden secret

Directed by Frank Darabont, producer of such hit films as The Green Mile (1999) and The Majestic (2001), The Shawshank Redemption is a film of absolute breathtaking perfection that ranks near the top of most lists of the best films ever produced. Thomas Newmans musical score, reused in countless films in the years since its release, blends together with brilliant casting, memorable screen performance, and masterful set design to create an unmatched and timeless epic. If you havent seen The Shawshank Redemption, you arent just missing out on a great film, but a great life experience as well. Do yourself a favor and see this Movie

Just Friends (DVD) Review

A somewhat hilarious and charming romantic comedy, Just Friends explores the innermost depths of the infamous friend zone of male/female relationships. Directed by Roger Kumble, the brains behind the widely lauded film Cruel Intentions (1999), the film has a novel premise, and although not the funniest comedy to hit the big screen in the past few years, it does have some really funny moments. Adam Tex Davis makes his debut as a screenwriter after extensive work in cinematography and TV writing, and his efforts are above average, but Just Friends is not in the same league as similar themed contemporaries such as Theres Something About Mary (1998) and Meet The Parents (2000). Nevertheless, its a film well worth seeing

Just Friends follows the life of Chris Brander (Ryan Reynolds), a formerly obese New Jersey high school student in love with classmate Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart). However, Chris long ago fell into the friend zone, and although, he spent much of his adoles cence bonding and building memories with Jamie, she never saw him as anything more than a friend. At their 1995 graduation party, Chris vows to reveal his true feelings, but his well-intentioned attempt blows up in his face when a jerk classmate humiliates him in front of his peers. Enraged, Chris vows to leave town and become somebody.

Fast forward ten years to 2005, where Chris is a thin, romantically smooth and wealthy record executive living in Los Angeles. He lives in a multi-million dollar house, drives a flashy sports car, and dates a string of beautiful models. Against his wishes, Chris is forced to watch over one of the companys hottest pop artists, the ditsy and annoying Samantha James (Anna Faris). En route to Paris, their jet becomes grounded in New Jersey, and Chris is left with no alternative but to return home. While there, hes reminded of his lifelong crush on Jamie. With newfound confidence, Chris sets out to win over Jamie, but in so doing, he doesnt act like the real Chris, and his actions have the opposite effect. Meanwhile, a rival suitor from high school, a guitar-playing nice guy named Dusty (Chris Klein), enters the picture. His courtship threatens to ruin Chriss latest pursuit of Jamie, but in the end, the only impediment to Chriss lifelong dream is himself

Cut from a formulaic genre, the resolution of Just Friends is rather predictable. But Moviegoers dont watch these types of films for suspense; they only want to laugh. And anyone who enjoyed Ryan Reynolds in National Lampoons Van Wilder is going to enjoy his performance in this film as well. Although not as well-written as the aforementioned film, Reynolds helps prop up the script with a well-cast comic persona akin to Owen Wilson and a straight-face delivery that would make Leslie Nielsen jealous. In fact, Just Friends is a good pick for those hoping to just laugh out loud. Two particularly hilarious scenes come to mind, one in which Chris makes an unexpected return to the ice rink after busting his lip, and one in which he receives an unexpected hand-hold while watching The Notebook. The latter is especially hilarious, and Adam Davis deserves extra credit for creating this classic and original scene. In the end, Just Friends will never garner the status of all-time comedy cult classic, but for the present day, it more than fulfills its promise to create laughter

What Does A Film Editor Do?

How many times have you been in a Movie theater and when the title film editor came up, you had no clue what that meant? In the old days, film editors were rarely given solo main title credit and most people thought they were more of a pair of hands that pieced the film together. As the decades have passed, the role of film editor has become increasingly more publicized and with the invention of computers and digital editing, more and more of the general public is aware of what it takes to edit a Movie.

Film editors are the people who take the raw footage shot on a Movie set, and select which shots, angles, performances and more to use, and then cut them together to form a cohesive and interesting story. The key to film editing is that there are a million choices of how to cut a scene, but a good editor will have a strong feel for pacing, rhythm, and storytelling. Editors also add music, visual effects, and sound effects to their cut sequences to add even more depth to a scene. Usually an editor will work closely with directors, writers, producers, and composers to finish a film to perfection.

Film editing is not something that can be automated and done completely by computers. Many people assume that if they purchase an editing software program that they will become an expert in film editing. Similar to how a word processing program will not make someone a best-selling author, digital editing programs like Avid or Final Cut Pro take not only technical skill but creative talent. While learning the technical part of the software will help you to cut a project, there is also valuable knowledge that comes only with experience and practice.

If you are thinking about a career in film editing, I would suggest finding a school or university that offers both theory classes AND hands on production, with editing equipment available to learn on, free if you are a student. I have found that having a technical background, in addition to being educated about the classic forms of cinema, where the rules of film language were born, and the history of film, has always given me an extra advantage that a lot of people don't have. I have several friends who have attended film programs at Columbia, UCLA, USC, NYU, and more, and all have loved their schools.

If you are not sure which area of production that you would like to go into, you might consider getting a very broad education in film and then if you decide to specialize in film editing, you can supplement your knowledge later with continuing education or Avid training camps or Final Cut Pro courses. Digital editing has become the norm for cutting films, and there are many programs available to practice with right at home on your own computer. You can purchase Final Cut Pro, Avid Express, and more simple programs like iMovie and others to get started on your editing career.

If you don't want to spend 4 years in a university or college setting, there are specialized film editing schools that you can attend through various editorial companies and training camps. These programs can be costly, so if you can manage the tuition, you can usually get a very quick hands-on training in a short amount of time. The downside t o these types of training camps is that they teach a lot of technical basics that can't compensate for the actual reality of how a cutting room is operated. Sometimes, there is no comparison to cutting room experience! If you do decide to be a film editor, ask to sit in with professional editors to get an idea of how films are cut!

Movie Review Elmer Gantry (1960)

ELMER GANTRY is one hopping good story of a fast talking appliance salesman from the Bible Belt who, back in the days of the Prohibition and Speak-Easies, cons his way up the steps of success and transforms into a fiery preacher who can agitate the masses in every direction he wants.

He builds up a considerable following in Zenith, Kansas as the eager sidekick of Sharon Falconer, an evangelist who has more truth in her soul than Elmer. Gantry milks the whole enterprise for whatever its worth until the tragic ending when the transformation of this super huckster emerges as the principle character arc of the whole plot.

Adapted from Sinclair Lewis's book by the same title, director Richard Brooks created a classic indictment of those revivalists who manipulate the masses for their own ends by using the Jesus's message of love as a shield and subterfuge.

The movie was nominated for 5 Oscars in 1961 won 3 of them Best Actor in a Leading Role for Burt Lancast er, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Shirley Jones and Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium for Richard Brooks.

Elmer Gantry (played by considerable fire and brimstone by Burt Lancaster) starts his journey as a big time loser, a traveling appliance salesman in the 20s who is more successful at cracking up his drinking buddies with lewd jokes and seducing young women for one night stands than anything else. Always broke, always moving from one town to another, but endowed by the obvious gift of bombastic rhetoric, he finds his calling under the tent of the revivalist Sharon Falconer (played by the incredibly beautiful Jean Simmons).

Despite Falconer's initial reluctance, the fast-talking fast-moving Gantry manages to win her trust to deliver his first sermon as a guest preacher which ends up as a resounding success.

Many other such sermons follow: Sin. Sin, Sin. You're all sinners. You're all doomed to perdition. You're all goin' to the painful, stinkin', scaldin', everlastin' tortures of a fiery hell, created by God for sinners, unless, unless, unless you repent is one example to the type of delivery unleashed by Gantry in lethal dozes.

Shooting up the success graph with alarming ease, Gantry moves the whole tent-based rural operation to Zenith, Kansas, an urban setting that scares Falconer's cautious business manager. But when the town guarantees to pay the Falconer operation $30,000 upfront, the deed is done and the troupe moves into Zenith with a marching band, clowns and great fanfare.

Falconer, Gantry and their team promise to revive the fire of devotion in the souls of Zenith's citizens and fill the empty pews of the local churches with new parishioners. In return, the local churches promise not to hold any meetings while the Falconer is in town to maximize the proceeds. Falconer and Gantry deliver precisely that and in the process their relationship moves from a professional to a very p ersonal level.

One of the key roles in this movie is that of the Pulitzer-prize winner veteran journalist Jim Lefferts (played with great reserve and credibility by Arthur Kennedy) who is the ace reporter for the local Zenith daily.

Lefferts provides the skeptical, secular, pro-scientific counterpoint to Gantry's high-flying Bible-thumping hellfire and brimstone rhetoric. Even when Gantry is down and vulnerable to attacks, Lefferts sticks to his own professional principles and refuses to exploit scandalous stories that may or may not be true, regardless of their impact on the circulation numbers.

As such, the Lefferts character stands as a symbol of objectivity whose vision is not clouded by the dust of fickle emotions easily kicked up by revivalism. He successfully portrays the counterpoint view that unbridled religious fervor is perhaps not the only source of morality in civic life.

Another important part belongs to Lulu Bains (played by the angelic Shirley Jones who truly gives her soul to this supporting role) who is the girl that Gantry, back in his early days when no one knew him, had a one night stand with and ceremoniously dumped the next morning without even saying goodbye, except for a cynical Merry Xmas he scribbles on the bedroom mirror with her lipstick while she is still sleeping .

Now years later Lulu meets Gantry again in Zenith, this time working as a girl in a house of ill repute against which Gantry launches a public clean-up campaign. As the citizens of Zenith follow Gantry's lead in media-covered nightly raids on the speak-easy hideouts and brothels, Lulu exacts her revenge with devastating effectiveness.

Gantry's hypocrisy bits him in the rear, but not for long. Repenting how she framed an unsuspecting Gantry in her apartment with the aid of her pimp and a photographer for hire, she recants her accusations and admits the frame up, thus restoring a reviled Gantry back to his burning pulpi t. Again, Brooks allows us to have a peek into unconventional sources of common virtue.

The film ends with a spectacular scene in which total devastation visits the newly opened tabernacle that Falconer has dreamed of for so long. The end both reveals the weakness in the way in which Falconer approached her faith, as well as the way the same faith has transformed an ordinary girl from the boondocks into a truly spiritual being with healing powers.

Gantry, on the other hand although he is offered everything he ever dreamed of on a golden plate, refuses to take over Falconer's mantle and moves on for the next thing in his life.

He turns his back to true power and even more riches and simply walks away because for the first time in his life he has discovered something in his soul that is more true and more precious than all the external power he managed to grab through a life of deception and manipulation.

The movie ends with that great note that sometim es divine love will visit us at exactly those times when we have the courage to walk away from that relentless desire to acquire the same love by force, through our own efforts and conniving.

A 9 out of 10.

Review of Hells Kitchen

Hells Kitchen, a cooking-based reality television show, is most known for its crass and cacophonous British chef Gordon Ramsay. The US version of Hell's Kitchen follows in the footsteps of the UK television series, the original Hells Kitchen, which was broadcast in the UK in 2004. The first American season (the show is now in its second season) premiered on FOX in 2005, with Season Two premiering in June of 2006. It has since been announced that a third season of the show will air on FOX in the Summer of 2007.

The premise of the show features twelve contestants (with restaurant experience ranging from executive chef to waiter) who are competing to own their own million dollar restaurant. The contestant group features men and women of all ages, some who have been cooking in top American restaurants and others who have been cooking only for their families. Friction and drama occurs largely based upon this wide range of experience and dueling egos, but is also exacerbate d by the rages and incessant insults doled out by head chef Ramsay.

As with the British show, the contestants are divided up into a red team and the blue team and compete in a series of cooking challenges, ranging from creating a five-course meal from last evenings leftovers to setting the perfect five-star restaurant table in the smallest amount of time. Each week, the best member from the losing team during the latest service period (best as determined by Ramsay) is asked to nominate two of their fellow teammates for elimination; one of these two is sent home by Gordon Ramsay.

The second season of Hells Kitchen featured two teams divided by gender. The winner was promised an executive chef position at the billion dollar Red Rock Resort Spa and Casino, as well as a financial interest in the restaurant.

Despite its popularity, critics and audiences alike have panned the show, citing that the drama is based solely on Ramsay's insults and his ability to humi liate both contestants and restaurant patrons.

Highest Paid Actor in Bollywood!

How does it feel to have a dozen flops in a row? I asked Hrithik Roshan, a week before Krrish released in June. Krrish is my eleventh film. Where do the 'dozen flops' come from? the star asked me.Okay then, 9, I suggested. He lightened up. I have never given nine flops in a row. I had three big hits: Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya and -- if you can count my contribution alongside big co-stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan -- Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Mission Kashmir and Fiza, he explained, weren't flops.Things have changed, massively. Once almost written-off by show business, Hrithik now doesn't need to justify anything. His Krrish is a tremendous success. And it is said he is close to signing an unbelievable deal with the Anil Ambani-controlled Adlabs group -- Rs 35 crores (Rs 350 million) for three films, which would make him the highest paid actor in Bollywood. That tag has so-far rested on Aamir Khan's shoulders, the rarely-appearing superstar said to be com manding Rs 7 crores (Rs 70 million) per film. Hrithik's new deal would mean he will earn close to Rs 12 crore (Rs 120 million) a film, and enjoy all decision-making rights: he can space the films as he wants over the next three years, pick the scripts and the directors. It's a deal to kill for.

Aamir is the beneficiary of a Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million) co-production deal with PVR Cinemas -- the actor is making two films for the joint venture, Zaamen Pe Taare directed by Amol Gupte, and a youthful comedy marking (Main Hoon Na, Maqbool) scriptwriter Abbas Tyrewala's directorial debut. And now it suddenly seems there are only seven real superstars in Bollywood -- Aamir, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan -- and this shortage means they are obviously worth their weight in gold.

I am an IT Professional and I got these all the information from http://www.bollywoodvillage.com, i hope this article will increase your kn owledge about the Bollywood actors remuneration.

The Dick Van Dyke Show (DVD) Review

In the Fall of 1961, CBS first aired The Dick Van Dyke Show, one of funniest sitcoms in television history. Similar to I Love Lucy, but featuring more docile and less eccentric characters, the show became a mainstay in the top 10 Nielsen ratings for its first four seasons. When the show's ratings slipped in the fifth season, the network cancelled the show. But in the four decades since, The Dick Van Dyke Show has continued to entertain its fans and their children (and their children's children) via syndicated re-runs

The Dick Van Dyke Show is centered around the life of Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke), a family man living in suburban New York. As the head writer for the fictional Alan Brady Show, he works with co-writers Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally Rogers (Rose Marie). Rob's work life is always interesting given Buddy's constant wisecracks, Sally's never-ending search for a husband, and the trio's unified harassment of Alan Brady's brother-in-law, Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon). At home, Rob's loving yet overly-nervous wife Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) stays at home with the couple's son Ritchie (Larry Mathews). Surrounded by all these unique characters, Rob is always embroiled in someone's scheme, fantasy, or shenanigan

The Dick Van Dyke Show DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere The Sick Boy and the Sitter in which Rob convinces Laura to go to a party at Alan Brady's house, despite the fact that their five-year-old son Ritchie is sick. The two get a babysitter, but Laura's maternal instincts don't disappear Other notable episodes from Season 1 include Jealousy in which Laura grows jealous of Rob's work relationship with a beautiful TV star, and Where Did I Come From? in which Ritchie asks Laura and Rob about his origins, and they struggle to come up with the right answer

Watching TV Has Never Been More Fun

Have you ever found yourself yelling at the TV after your team just made a boneheaded play and realize there is no one else to share your pain? Or, overcome with emotion when your favorite character died on the O.C., Lost, or 24 and realize theres not another soul in the room that cares? Have you ever been so engrossed in a show that you would have given anything to be able to interact with the producers, writers, or even the actors? For the past 70 years, television has primarily been an anti-social, one-way device, without an outlet for social interactivity. Well, now thats changed. Meet BuddyTV.

As more and more people get broadband Internet connections and put computers in their TV rooms (or laptops on their, well, laps) the notion of television as a one-way street is no longer reasonable. While you watch your favorite show, celebrities, experts, friends, family or (possibly) mortal enemies may be providing live commentary at BuddyTV. Everything imaginable is ava ilable; live video, live audio, live text, and interactive polls are all part of the BuddyTV experience. In fact, you can broadcast your own, private, live commentary to all your friends and neighbors. The television experience is now a communal one, where people can interact and socialize with both their friends and celebrities.

Television is never going away and it still draws enormous worldwide audiences; the most popular shows in the US drive over 30MM viewers per show. As the world becomes smaller and the global community continues to effortlessly reach across borders and oceans, television must adapt and become a community hub whose programming brings people closer together. It is happening today and its exciting, with BuddyTV leading the charge. Watching TV has never been more fun and exciting. Try BuddyTV out and ask youself this: Is this the next evolution of TV?

So, if you want to find our more about The OC or especially about 24, please visit this webs ite BuddyTV Television.

Monk (Season 2) DVD Review

One of the more clever television creations of the new millennium, Monk combines the high-grade suspense of a traditional TV drama with the quirky humor of a big screen comedy. Originally developed for ABC, the show became an instant prime-time lynchpin for the USA network, proving itself one of the more successful shows on cable TV

In Monk, Tony Shalhoub stars in the title role of Adrian Monk, a former San Francisco detective placed on psychiatric leave. A true legend in the community, Monk solves unsolvable crimes via his towering intellect, photographic memory, and meticulous observations. But the one case that alludes Monk is the 1997 murder of his wife Trudy, which forever altered Monk's capacity to perform his job. Suffering from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder and a number of odd phobias, Monk requires a personal assistant, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), for even his most basic daily activities.

Any Plus In Watching Plus?!

400 B.C, it was custom among Greeks to organize drama in rituals and festivals. Renowned playwrights were asked to present their creations, each writer had to represent three tragedies under the term triology. The drama was executed on large scale in opera with an open invitation to the people from all walks of life. The main objective of this activity was to impart knowledge in terms of religion, ethics, norms, cultural values; heroic deeds of their ancestors were revealed with full dignity and grandeur.

Today, in twenty 21st century era, when we hold remote of hundred channels, most of the fingers stick to only one and keep on trying to increase the clutch, until someone else is able to snatch. Almost in each family this kind of fight over remote can be observed, where females want to watch none other than STAR PLUS, the most happening one; why? Perhaps no one can answer this simple question. Star freaks are so much absorbed in these soaps (entertainment in insta llments) that they cant live without; neither they get boredom nor lose patience. Sometimes it becomes an irritation to sit in front of screen watching these thirty minutes soaps at stretch, a kind of dose becoming an addiction day by day. Regarding merits and demerits we find the characters neither flat nor round, indulging in unethical activities, that excite, ignite and tempt youngsters to great extent.

The issue of illegitimate child and unwed mother is common in every second story; prevalence of illicit relations being the spice of whole recipe reflect deterioration of social values in stages. In every tale, a woman protagonist is dominating and manipulating others consistently and her counterpart man is bound to obey her in each matter. Male characters sit idly at home all the daylong, busy in resolving domestic disputes, being indulge in family politics we see them confronting and arguing over trivial issues; on the other hand their huge business empires are run by some invisible magical hands,

Hardly we see any professional attitude in their conversation and body language rather they seem mere emotional fools. Dialogues often dont suit with their emergence. Each parivar is shown as business tycoon without struggling, striving or putting an effort into work life. Each person talks about a deal of 100 krore and a tender of 700 krore, only the hero gets these gigantic tenders leaving behind all his competent rivals, who might be more capable than him.

And sometimes this undefeated hero loses all the fortune incidentally, comes down on road in a very miserable plight. Even after this drastic financial collapse he puts on the same stylish clothes and accessories. In one episode, protagonists family members accuse himher of all the calamity, agony and suffering they are facing, throw himher out of their dwelling place and in the next episode all the misunderstandings, conflicts, clashes get resolved, all of sudden they begin to shower their compassion, sympathy and love on their beloved sondaughter, that happens repeatedly without any logical or causal link.

Every now & then we see main characters facing misfortunes, experiencing tragedies, undertaking series of co incidents, living in future, brooding over past almost oblivious of their present. pooja and arti are the favourite activities of women, they feel much delight in fasting for their husbands life every fortnight, arranging religious events twice a week, shedding tears on every changing moment, giving long speeches replete with references from their historical epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana, portray themselves as their ancient goddesses Saraswati, Paarvati, Lakshmi, and Durga etc , seem quite away from the real life human beings, unable we are to identify with themselves.

A vampire plays a vital role in each drama, who traps everyone in her charms, uses them for her personal interest and treats them as sheer puppets in her fingers. In the beginning, evils look like devils, neither they go through nemesis nor they face the music of their sinister deeds, they feel no guilt or regret, completely ignorant to the pangs of conscience. Suddenly we locate extremely wicked persons converting into saint-like nobles and vice versa.

Play usually lasts for years and years that factor influence the plot and theme to an extent. Just for the sake of sponsorships through ad-films, the channel has to compromise on quality, thought, plot, theme, essential ingredients and parameters of drama set by classic literature over centuries around the globe. It has become theatre of absurd owing to its farce, ludicrous and boisterous tragedies which seem tragii comedies indeed. Simultaneously has lost its status regarding mirror to 21st century society, rather inculcating social values, deviating masses from their culture.

Talking about the brighter side of these endless tragedies where we witness characte rs roaming around splendid, gorgeous sets in a very pleasant ambiance. SP has set the trend of spectacle (stage settings), which is made in accordance with aesthetic requirements of viewers. Despite all this, repetition of backgrounds occur in different plays of the same channel, because behind every project there is the same art director, stylist, concept writer, visualizer, and the cast. Background music is often too loud to tolerate. Progress in the field of plastic surgery has helped the stars of plus a lot because repeatedly they have to rush in order to change their visage entirely, after an accident, this Face Off therapy proves an exile for one character and becomes the cause of new entry for model cum actor who, with his unique performance changes completely the faade of serial and becomes the reason of downfall.

Always a house wife is seen in party dress while staying at home, nevertheless women are keen to watch these stereotype figures on screen, dreaming themselves in those gaudy outfits, loaded with jewels, gems and pearls. This kind of fantasy proves a relief to every next-door girlwoman; such world of imagination takes them far away from their daily hectic routine life in the form of an escape. Time leaves no consequences on these characters, as they look awfully young even, after the breach of two decades. Their minor activities draw full attention of media and press as they are often chased by reporters anchors.

On the other hand this channel lacks in thought, spirit and motivation, although a major source of penetration but giving no message at all.

Hardly we get any female character doing some valuable work outdoors or participating actively for some noble cause or society; rather she is busy all the time in family politics either +vly or vly. Different fields and outlets have never been touched whereas, in this era woman is performing lots of other duties besides household activities, but on screen she i s depicted as mere source of amusement, is confined only to drawing rooms, ball rooms and bars. Even on work place she is draped in glitzy dress and loud makeup. All these aspects show limited range of the story line as middle and lower classes remain untouched. Superstition plays a key role because most of the titles start with letter K and this phenomenon also prevails throughout due to its existence in the sub conscious of all the participants. Drama being a form of Catharsis gives vent to pent up feelings and emotions. It is said that the excitement of tragedy provides a safe outlet for our feelings, which we cannot express in actual life. But it demands its appropriate and necessary requirements that provide a soul to an ideal play, which is an imitation not only of a complete action but also of incidents arousing pity and fear. Magnitude i-e the proper length of a tragic play is essential:

It must be a whole story, not a collection of incidents.

Apart from this a good play must have Prologue (beginning), middle and Exode (end). It should have good reason for beginning where it does and for ending where it does.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DVD) Review

Nominated for 28 Emmys, including several for Outstanding Visual Effects, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine continues the rich tradition of the original 1960s Star Trek franchise. Created by former L.A. police officer Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek TV series morphed into a franchise famous for the unprecedented fanatical devotion of its audience. Lasting only three seasons during its original network run, Star Trek struck gold with its syndicated reruns, launching a number of motion pictures featuring the original cast as well as novels, comic books, collectibles, and reams of Star Trek-related memorabilia. Following on the heels of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), the first Star Trek series spin-off of the original, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine foreshadowed additional spin-offs - Star Trek: Voyager (1995), and Star Trek: Enterprise (2001). Sporting an entirely new cast and crew from its two predecessors, the show focuses on a particular system administered by the Federatio n instead of the usual Star Trek mission of exploring strange new worlds

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine follows the exploits of the Starfleet crew aboard an abandoned and gutted Cardassian space station orbiting the planet of Bajor. In the aftermath of Cardassian occupation, the Bajorian government invited the Starfleet to oversee the reconstruction of the space station. Deep Space Nine quickly transformed into a teeming city of commerce and a hub for travel (similar to Babylon 5) thanks to the discovery of an unknown wormhole nearby. But the wormhole leads to the Gamma Quadrant, realm of the feared Dominion alliance, which views the wormhole travelers as a threat to its totalitarian grip on power. As such, the Dominion launches an attack against the Federation and its Klingon allies. The subsequent and ongoing war is the basis for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Capt. Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) is credited with discovering the wormhole, and he oversees the crew of Dee p Space Nine as they wage battle to preserve the Federation. Ironically, his colleague, Constable Odo (Rene Auberjonois), is a Changeling - an alien race of shapeshifters who lead the Dominion's united front. Together with the rest of the crew aboard Deep Space Nine, they struggle with internal and external conflicts that threaten to destroy their very way of life

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the series premiere Emissary in which the recently abandoned Cardassian space station, Terok Nor, is resettled by the Federation at the request of the Bajorians. Capt. Benjamin Sisko takes command and his discovery of the first stable wormhole nearby, a wormhole worshipped by the Bajorians as a god, transforms Sisko into a prophet in the eyes of the Bajorians. Meanwhile, the audience meets the rest of the cast and crew for Deep Space Nine Other notable episodes from Season 1 include Move Along Home in which Quark's cheating pr ompts a group of aliens from Gamma Quadrant to exact revenge on the crew of Deep Space Nine, and Dramatis Personae in which an indwelling by aliens transforms Sisko and Kira into enemies of the crew

The Phantom On Film

I will admit it. It may not be fashionable, but I am a Musical theatre buff. In my youth I attended countless stage productions, drinking in the delights of the theatrical experience. A movie can never truly capture the atmosphere of a darkened theatre, the audience sat spell bound as the stage is set on fire (Martin Guerre) or a chandelier comes falling down right above their heads (The Phantom Of The Opera). Yet it is to the second of these Musicals on screen adaptation that I must now look.

Let me say from the start that I enjoyed Joel Schumachers movie. There are many who have been critical and it is true that the film is by no means a faithful replica of the stage show. Yet Andrew Lloyd Webbers adaptation is a far cry from the original novel by Gaston Leroux to begin with. Forget the previous film incarnations with the like of Lon Chaney and Claude Rains: Lloyd Webbers Phantom is a far more sympathetic and sexual beast. His tortured soul and haunting voic e have entranced countless female theatre-goers.

Gerald Butler does an admirable job of capturing the enigmatic Phantom. Charles Harts lyrics tell a tale of a mans love for a woman, his desire to be close to her through her music and the promotion of her career and the madness that ensues when he realises she is incapable of love ignoring physical defects, when she chooses the safety of a childhood sweetheart. Emmy Rossum plays the youthful love interest Christine, a woman haunted by the death of her father and struggling to cope alone in the world and Patrick Wilson is her ardent suitor, Raoul the Vicomte de Chagny. The supporting cast are excellent, but at the end of the day it is Rossum and Butler that steal the show.

The sets are sumptuous and the costumes magnificent. Yet there ar e times when the movie appears to be trying to still be a stage show: in the graveyard scene for example a smoke machine is clearly being used for the mist, with no real effort to hide the fact. Such moments jar, but are thankfully few and far between. Jokes, particularly between the two managers have lost some of their humour and there is a far greater reliance on visual humour, such as the addition of a midget. Whats more, for visual effect some movements have been put in that make no sense: why would Raoul be walking through the foyer whilst Christine is still singing on stage?

These are minor inconveniences however. The raw sexuality of Past The Point Of No Return is stronger in the movie and a particular high point for this viewer. The effects are spectacular, the cast strong and the s tory line as true to Andrew Lloyd Webbers stage production as any fan could hope for. It is a movie worth seeing for any Musical lover or just the plain romantic at heart, although I would also advise a visit to the stage show. A movie can never equal the unpredictability and freshness of theatre, although this one definitely comes close!

Elf (Movie Review)

This Christmas, discover your inner elf At least, that's the tagline for Elf, one of the funniest films of 2003. Packed with a cast of Hollywood all-star talent, Elf is guaranteed to make you laugh. The touching story about an adopted elf who discovers he's really a boy is sort of a bizzaro-Pinocchio story that opened to such widespread critical acclaim that it unanimously swept zero Oscars at the 2004 Academy Awards ceremony! Nevertheless, Elf is worth the price of admission. Although Christmas Vacation still holds the title as the top Christmas comedy, Elf is still a great night's entertainment

Buddy (Will Ferrell) is an oversized elf working away at the North Pole. Always wearing a smile, he dwarfs his comrades and never seems able to find his niche in the toy-making arena. Eventually, Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) is forced to reveal the truth to Buddy. He's actually a human. He's not really an elf at all. The elves love buddy just the same, but Buddy feels the need to strike out on his own and try to find himself - and maybe even his family too

Scouring the streets of New York City, Buddy must learn the urban rules of life. In due time, he manages to track down his biological father, a successful publishing executive named Walter (James Caan). But despite the prodding of his wife Emily (Mary Steenburgen), Walter is reluctant to start a relationship with the over-eager grown-up child

In the meantime, Buddy spends his days working at Gimbel's department store where he stars as a department store Santa's elf and a Christmas season decorator, creating a magical wonderland that thrills customers and employees alike. Striking up a relationship with fellow employee Jovie (Zooey Deschanel), Buddy's life is slowly transitioning from elf to human But will he be able to survive in the big city? Will he be able to rekindle a relationship with his father? Elf thoroughly entertains us while we find out

With a great cast of writers, El f manages to keep the laughs rolling throughout the entirety of the film. Although lacking in some areas (it's not one of the greatest comedies of all-time), Elf is a hilarious Movie in its own right. Will Ferrell turns in an amazing performance as Buddy. Like Tom Hanks in Big, he's actually believable as the innocent man-child roaming the streets of New York City. It's this farcical innocence that provides Elf with the charm necessary to keep the audience involved in the story beginning to end. Because of its laugh factor, and the surprisingly small number of decent Christmas-themed Movies, Elf is a definite must-see film Check it out this Ch ristmas!

A Baby Story A Funny Story To Brighten Your Day

My wife loves to watch the show, A Baby Story, everyday. She starting watching it a year ago when she was pregnant with our son, because she wanted to try to get an idea what labor would be like. Now she watches, because she wants to reminisce about the birth of our son, and look forward to having our next child. Personally I think that this show is boring, but recently I heard a baby story of a different kind. Here is how the story went.

The girl was nineteen years old with no boyfriend in the picture anymore. She was working full time to try to make ends meet, and she was getting very anxious for the baby to be born. One morning before she had to be at work, she went to the doctors office for a checkup. The doctor checked her and told her that she was in labor, and she needed to go to the hospital to be delivered. She said cool, and then she asked do I need to go to the hospital now, or can I go after work. The doctor politely told her that she did not hav e to go to the hospital immediately, but that she could only go home and get her a bag ready for the hospital stay. She asked if it would be ok if she got something to eat, and he said he did not advise it. Next thing you know she is in the drive-thru line at Whataburger trying to get something to eat, and a guy backed into the driver side of her truck. Remember now that she is in active labor. She can not get out of the driver side door, so she drags her big, nine months pregnant belly out the passenger side door. The man saw her condition, and got so worried he fainted. Now a nine month pregnant women is sitting in the parking lot at Whataburger, in active labor, fanning a man trying to revive him. Once she got home, her mother rushed her to the hospital. After a few hours of labor a beautiful baby boy was born, and both mother and baby were healthy. I dont know about you, but if A Baby Story was this interesting everyday, I think I would tune in a lot more often.

Modeling A platform for Bollywood

What do Aishwarya Rai, Juhi Chawla, Arjun Rampal ,Sushmita Sen, Diya Mirza, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea, Shiny Ahuja, John Abraham, Celina Jailtley and Priyanka Chopra have in common apart from their killer looks and awesome bodies? Yes, they shared one platform namely, modeling. These model turned Actors were highly successful in modeling before stepping into the world of Bollywood. Many Actors believe that modeling gives them a stable foundation to be recognized before getting their first break in Bollywood. Most of these stars believed that modeling is a stepping stone to Bollywood. Without entering into the world of modeling, their life would take a very different turn by making their entry into Bollywood more difficult and inaccessible.

Most model turned Actors stepped into modeling by catching our attention in beauty pageants. Who can forget Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai sashay down the ramp after winning their titles? No one. These beauty queens insp ired millions of Indians who watched them and wanted to be like them in every manner. Young girls desired to look like them and take part in these beauty pageants. Mothers of teenaged daughters would pester their kids to dress well and push them forward for beauty pageants. With the advent of these exotic beauties,

w:st=on>India was in for a beauty revolution. These strong willed beauty queens had no looking back . They reached their destination - Bollywood in no time.

With this instance, many young aspiring Actors looked up to their role models to pursue their much sought after Bollywood dream. Modeling is an arena more to do with beautiful personalities than fashion per say. No one is throwing dust one anyone's eyes here, as it is a well known fact that, clothes look good on a beautiful body rather than on someone ill-proportionate. Beauty is all over the place and looking uniquely gorgeous is the mantra for models. These stars surely had what it took to be a H indi film star and yes, they did it with style.

It is well known preconceived notion that models can't act. There were many instances when models were criticized heavily and were shown the exit. However, over a period of failures, there were many of these same models who proved critics wrong. For instance, Aishwarya Rai was considered plasticky in her debut film Aur Pyar Ho Gaya but with time, she set by Bollywood by storm in her stellar performances in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. John Abraham is another actor who has also won several accolades in his films like Jism, Dhoom and Taxi no.9211. Athough Shiny Ahuja is just 2 films old, his mind blowing performance in Hazaaron Khwaishye Aisi and Gangster has won him millions of fans.

Many young and upcoming Actors like Samir Dattani believe that modeling provides them easy entry to Bollywood. Daisy Boppana of Garam Masala fame have been cast with extremely successful Actors like Akshay Kumar and John Abraham. K atrina Kaif famous for ads campaigns like Seagram's, Lakme and Dyna have acted in films like Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya and Humko Deewana Kar Gaye cast opposite Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Models like Deepika Padukone and Shivani Kapur are the new entrants to Bollywood after a successful stint in modeling? What lies ahead, only time will tell. Watch this space for more.

High Tension A Movie to Die For

High Tension (2003)

Tagline: Hearts will bleed.

Every time I go to the video store, Im assaulted by a new wave of low-budget Horror flicks. Many have slick packaging and can boast either an award or critical praise, while others look like they were put together in the dark by rabid monkeys. Either way, the outside of the Film often has very little to do with whats on the inside. That neat-looking Movie nestled in between Moulin Rouge and Runaway Bride may be a major disappointment, while the one on the bottom shelf of the back row may be surprisingly good. You rolls the dice and takes your chances.

This was my dilemma when I came across the French Film High Tension. On the surface, it had all the elements that would drive a Horror fanboy wild. Buff chick on the cover? Check. Buff chick holding a weapon capable of mutilation and carnage (in this case an industrial buzzsaw)? Check. High-quality design and clearly marked Unrated? Check.

And if that wasnt enough, just look at some of the critical blurbs printed on the front and back of the case: It will scare the hell out of you! exclaims Dennis Dermody of Paper. The best Horror Movie of the year! cries Shawn Edwards of Fox-TV. A must-see! screams Time Out New York.

Nevermind the fact that Ive never heard of Paper or Time Out New York. What did I really have to lose, besides an hour and a half of my life? With that thought in mind, I picked up High Tension and took it home. Hours later, the Movie was in, and the lights were out.

To begin with, I guess I should give credit to the Filmmakers for keeping things nice and elementary. The plot is so simple that even a child or small animal could follow it. In a nutshell: Marie (Cecile De France) and Alex (Maiwenn) are college classmates and best friends. Hoping to study for exams in peace and quiet, they travel to the isolated country home of Alexs parents. The girls arrive late at night, say their hellos, then go to bed. Soon afterwards, a deranged killer (Philippe Nachon) shows up at the front door and rings the bell. After that, well, I think you get the general idea. And this is all in the first fifteen minutes. The rest of the Movie consists of Marie trying to catch up with the killer, who has abducted Alex and thrown her in the back of his would-only-be-owned-by-a-serial-killer van.

Very little seems to happen in High Tension besides a series of murders and cha se sequences, but somehow theyre able to stretch it out to an hour and a half. Luckily, the Movie is still short enough to keep from seeming repetitive, and the audience is whisked along with precious little time to catch their breath. No doubt, just what director Alexandre Aja was shooting for.

I could complain that the characters are one-dimensional, but what would be the point? This is a Movie which deals with in-your-face terror and graphic Violence. When the axes start swinging, the characters themselves arent even that important. Theyre just there to provide a target for all the sharp cutlery.

Still, the psychological aspect of the Film would have been more successful if the audience were allowed to get to know Alex and Marie a little better. We get a brief amount of banter to start the p icture, but five or ten more minutes would have been nice (especially considering the turn that their relationship takes towards the end of the Film). And the other victims of the killer? Well, theyre so underdeveloped that I felt absolutely nothing when they bought the farm. Of course, developing all these characters would have cut into the time allotted for bloody mayhem, so maybe its for the best in the long run. Besides, underdeveloped victims are a staple of the Horror genre. We watch this sort of Film to see people get dismembered, not quote Shakespeare.

And fans of dismemberment have plenty to cheer about. Theres some really brut al stuff in the unrated version of High Tension. Take, for example, a scene in which the killer buries an axe in the chest of an unlucky victim. First, were treated to the sounds of the victims breastbone cracking and splintering as the killer twists and pulls on the handle. This is where lesser Gore Movies would stop. The killer would pull the axe free, and the victim would drop lifelessly to the floor. But not High Tension. The victim falls face-first onto the floor, the axe still embedded in his chest. Then, the killer places his big work boot on the victims back and presses down, forcing the axe blade to penetrate even deeper into the now-ruined chest cavity. That, Gore fans, is how you shoot a murder scene! Of course, some top-notch special effects help punctuate the killings, adding a further sense of gory realism to the proceedings.

I also want to give credit to the Filmmakers for having the courage to kill a child. True, the actual deed occurs off-screen, but so many Movies wimp out and avoid this kind of thing altogether, as if real-life serial killers have never preyed on children. The innocent child ducking and dodging the otherwise unstoppable killer has become almost as big a Horror cliche as the virginal girl who always makes it until the end. Well, not in this Film!

And lets not forget the much-hyped twist towards the end of the Film. It no doubt helped High Tension garner such attention, but dont even bother tryin g to figure it out during the course of the picture. The revelation comes from left field with nary a clue to speak of (most of those got left on the cutting room floor). Still, the twist is inventive and allows the picture to stand out from among the crowd. Youll probably love it or hate it. Me? I was somewhere in the middle. While I respected the Filmmakers for trying to do something different, I also couldnt help but notice that some earlier events seem to make the twist impossible. But enough on the subject. Watch the Movie and judge for yourself. I dont want to give anything away.

I want to end this review by complimenting Cecile De France on her performance in the Film. She bleeds, sweats, suffocates, and swings a barbed-wire club with the greatest of ease, and through it all she looks absolutely stunning. The role of Marie doesnt require her to speak much, but she does a nice job of conveying emotion through simple gestures and facial expressions. If she keeps this up (and turns in a few dramatic performances to boot), we might just be seeing the rise of a French Sigourney Weaver. And as I sit here thinking back to Sigourney Weaver in her prime, thats something I would like to see very, very much.

In this article we're going to go over what to expect when you've finally landed that first big job as an actor.

Many people think that Acting is all about glamour and living the good life. Maybe you get some fancy limo and a ton of other perks and that's all there is to it. Unfortunately, the real work of being an actor is not glamorous. There's actual work involved. Here is a typical day on the set of a major motion picture.

You're up at about 5:30 in the morning. Why? Because most likely you have a call time of 7 AM and the shoot is in Pasadena. You're on your own as far as getting there so you have to shower and shave early and hop in your own car and drive to the shoot. Traffic in LA is awful so you better get an early start. After you arrive and park your own car, a teamster shu ffles you off to the film set. At the set you check in with the second director and then get in line at the food truck for a quick breakfast. No fancy meals.

Before you even get a chance to finish your bagel, a girl from wardrobe comes over to you and says they need to measure you for a new jacket that they picked out for your scene. After you get fitted they then ship you off to makeup. After about an hour of having your face tortured you're out of the makeup trailer with toilet paper stuck to your collar in order to keep makeup off your clothes. It's now time to head to the set.

The director and the whole crew, lighting, cameras, etc., are already all there setting up the scene. At this point the director will have a brief chat with you to inform you of the change in your lines that you spent half the night studying and memorizing. At this time you'll rehearse the new lines a couple of times on the set. Then they finish setting up the lights and whateve r else is needed for the scene. This gives you some extra time to memorize your new lines. So you go to your trailer to do this. Yes, you actually get your own trailer. It's also the size of a walk in closet.

After about 20 minutes or so, the production assistant knocks on your trailer door and calls you back to the set. At this time they remove the tissue paper from your collar and you go to your mark on the set to begin the scene.

The scene begins. Your co-star approaches you and begins to say her lines. You then say yours and suddenly you hear the director say cut! You wonder what you did wrong. Actually, nothing. One of the lights on the set went out. The gaffer runs over, replaces the bulb, and then you start again from the beginning. They do a few more takes of the same scene from different angles. In the final cutting they'll decide which one to use.

You'll get about 2 shots done before it's time to change the set for the next scene. The re's no applause or fanfare. You might get a nice job from the director, but that's about it. You then just sit around and wait for the next scene.

That is the truth about Acting. Only about 10% of the time are you actually Acting. The other 90% you spend waiting around for set changes and other things. So unless you have a major role that requires a lot of preparation, you better bring a deck of playing cards with you or you're going to be bored out of your skin.

At around noon you break for lunch. An hour later you come back, maybe do another scene and then get your sheets for tomorrow's shoot. You're done for the day and go home.

Not very glamorous is it? No, but when the film is released and you get to see what they've done with what seemed like pretty dull stuff, it simply amazes you. And knowing that people all over the world are going to be seeing you, well, that's what Acting is all about.

Entertainment The Greatest Shows On Earth

Entertainment. A term as broad as the Grand Canyon, as deep as the Atlantic Ocean and as delightful as a kid who's just been let loose in a candy store. Ever since man can remember, he has been in search of new ways to be entertained. In the old Roman days, it was seeing a lion take off the head of a gladiator. In modern times, it's reality television. There are more types of Entertainment than you can possibly imagine. Some of it, even suitable for children.

In the following series of articles we're going to try to stay away from the usual dull definitions of certain types of Entertainment, like What is a play? and questions of that nature. Instead, we're going to focus on some of the greatest entertainers and events of our times. These events cover a broad range of categories from TV to movies to music to theater, to the circus and so on. Entertainment itself may very well be one subject where you could write a thousand books on it, all the size of War And Peace. And let's not forget historical re-enactments as a form of Ente rtainment as well, though not traditionally considered theater. Many of these re-enactments take place in historically significant cities and towns throughout the world, especially in the United States where Civil War re-enactments are regularly held in towns like Gettysburg.

Getting back to more traditional forms of Entertainment, we've had the pleasure of hearing such great singers perform in concerts from all musical styles. We've heard the great performances of Enrico Caruso, one of the greatest operatic tenors of all time. We've heard the greatest rock and roll band ever, The Beatles, perform live at Shea Stadium in New York. We've heard Clay Aikin perform the Neil Sedaka song, Solitaire, after which Neil Sedaka said, I just lost my song forever. We've heard Cher sing on e of the greatest versions of the National Anthem ever at the Super Bowl. And of course there was Robert Preston, arguably the greatest Music Man of all time, singing 76 Trombones.

But singers don't hold a monopoly on the Entertainment industry. We've seen some great acting performances as well, both live and on TV and in movies. We've seen George C. Scott's electrifying performance as General Patton and then his refusal to accept the award for best actor at one of the most talked about Oscars of all time. We saw Gregory Peck becoming Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird, a performance that would win him an AFI award as the greatest hero in movies of all time. We saw Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh in the classic movie Gone With The Wind where Gable delivered one of the greatest and best known lines in movie history, Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.

These moments are but a speck in the vast timeline of Entertainment history; a history so rich in moments that a time capsule of them would need to be buried on a planet ten times the size of our own Earth. In the coming articles we'll take a more in depth look at some of the greatest entertainers and events of our time.

You won't want to miss this.

Quality TV Shows

It seems I am frequently caught up in discussions with people regarding the poor quality of TV shows in recent years. Sometimes it feels as if you are lucky because you found one night a week with some decent shows. While I still feel the overall quality of TV shows is mediocre at best I think there are two shows out there right now that are very good and epitomize what America is all about. Those shows are American Idol and The Biggest Loser.

I am not saying I like everything about these shows because I dont. I do not like when American Idol puts people on the air that are clearly there only to try and get on the air. It takes away from the people with the real talent. What I like about this show is it gives people the chance to live a dream of theirs that they might never have had the chance to realize. Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and Carrie Underwood are probably the biggest stars to come from the show so far. Kelly Clarkson is a big star, she is selling o ut arenas for her current tour. She sells many CDs and she is played all over the airwaves. Same goes for Clay Aiken, except he is not on tour right now. Carrie is more part of the country scene but still popular for that genre of music.

What I dont like about The Biggest Loser is that they put these people in front of America and virtually no clothes when getting weighed. It seems to me that would be very embarrassing. However, the positives outweigh the negatives in my opinion. This show helps a group of people learn how to change their lifestyles so they can become, and remain, healthy people. It shows the audience how difficult it is to make the changes and what they go threw while trying to make the changes. It doesnt just affect those 16 people on the show that season either. It has made an impact on many people across the country. Offices have Biggest Loser contests, families begin losing weight together, etc The impact is on society in general.

Both of these shows, in their own ways, shows what is possible with some hard work and determination. Hard work and determination is what our country was built on. These shows help to give people hope and they provide people with motivation to help them achieve their dreams. If this is not the sign of a good television show than I do not know what would be.

Deplorable Trash or Staggering Genius? The Movie Irreversible

Tipper Gore, get out the big guns. 'Irreversible' is here, and its just thrown one helluva first punch. No amount of boycotting, picketing, prohibition or name-calling could stop this blistering piece or moral certitude from landing, smoking, on the doorsteps of video stores all across the country. Ive watched it myself. Walked on down to the store and picked it up, right off the shelf. That was three nights ago, and since then, my mind keeps coming back to it, wheeling around and locking down on this aspect of it or that, unable to stop relating to something I wish Id never watched in the first place.

Yeah, I thought Id seen it all. Im one of those people who quotes lines from 'Reservoir Dogs' at parties and re-enacts the infamous crucifix in crotch scene from 'The Exorcist', laughing a ll the while. I do not believe in censorship. To put it very basically, I think there is an inherent right that exists for all of us as humans to create whatever art we may please, without restriction, as long as no one is physically hurt against their own will in the process. It is that belief that has made a movie like 'Irreversible' possible, and I find myself trying very hard not to choke on my own foot in the aftermath.

French Argentinean director Gasper Noe, who created a mild stir with his grating 1997 movie, Seul Contre Tous (I stand alone), and has elicited similar responses with his two other, smaller movies Sodomites (1998) and Carne (1991) has managed to craft something that is either a staggering work of monumental genius, or one of the most deplorable pieces of trash ever t o imprint celluloid depending on who's watching of course.

Believe me when I tell you its the next step in desensitization. The film caused massive waves with its world premiere at Cannes in 2002, causing people to walk out merely twenty minutes into the movie, with many more following less than halfway through. It experienced similar reactions with its North American release at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals, and just three nights ago, it was all I could do to hang on as I sat there on the couch, feeling every excruciating second pass by as I watched the infamous nine-minute rape scene roll out in front of me for the first time.

Yes kids, Irreversible has arrived, complete with deleted scenes, teasers, trailers and all the other fluff that comes with the typical DVD packa ge these days. The movie itself, however, is far from typical. Picked up by Lions Gate Films the company thats grown from producer of teeny art house films to major Hollywood player in the last seven years due to taking risks just like this one (American Psycho, Dogma and House of 1000 Corpses are merely three among a long list of movies that stank of far too much controversy for any of the non-independents to touch) the movies official video release date in North America was August 5, but it reached my neck of the woods a little late.

To be completely honest, I had no idea what I was getting into. I hadnt heard of it, but my viewing partner for the evening said he had been thoroughly warned of its graphic nature. Whatever. Id seen 'Faces of Death', for gods sake. Nothing could phase me.

Think again.

During the first moments of the only murder scene in the movie, which takes place about twenty minutes in, I felt my lungs seize up and tears well to the sur face of my eyes. I immediately paused it and demanded to know if what we were watching was snuff, because if it was, I was not watching anymore. My friend assured me it wasnt, and after a few minutes of regrouping we continued on, with me clinging to the knowledge that this was indeed make-believe as my only protection. What unfolded was a work of art that managed to shake my moral and ethical codes right down to the core, its equivalent non-existent in film and found only in Bret Easton Ellis hyper-controversial novel 'American Psycho'.

The movie, unrated, travels backward in time a la Harold Pinters Betrayal and Christopher Nolans Memento beginning with the ending sequence in which the camera swoops about among the buildings of France uncontrollably, denying the viewer any real chance to get a foot-hold on what is up or down and managing to create the actual physical feeling of vertigo. Along with this, Noe also employed the use of extremely low-frequency sound dur ing this opening sequence to add to the effect. The entire movie is filmed in such a way as to give the appearance of having no edits, creating a frighteningly realistic and personal effect similar to that of stream-of-consciousness writing another strange similarity to Ellis novel.

From there it soon takes us into The Rectum, a gay S&M club, where it finds Marcus (Vincent Cassel) and his reluctant friend Pierre (Albert Dupontel) in a heated and continuously confrontational search for the pimp known as La Tenia (The Tapeworm). The soundtrack throbs relentlessly as the camera continues to swoop about, exposing us to any number of homosexual acts in progress, revealed only in the blood red light of the clubs interior. As the scene unfolds, you can literally feel the violence coming. Once it transpires if you can actually sit through it you may find yourself wondering if you will be okay.

The film continues from there to reveal the vicious rape and beating of Mar cus girlfriend Alex (Monica Bellucci) by La Tenia in an underground tunnel also blood red. This is the pinnacle moment of the movie, fueling most of the controversy that surrounded it. If you can make it through this scene, the rest of the film is a breeze. For the first time since I watched 'The Shining' at seven years of age, I had to look away. I had to close my eyes and try not to listen. No longer is Noe's camera swooning about in its prior stupor it has locked on to the scene in front of it, seemingly bolted to the floor as it unflinchingly records what is without a doubt one of the most disturbing things you may ever witness on screen.

And what is the point of all this? That's a question you can't help but have. This is a movie that doesn't allow you to walk away without an opinion, and maybe that's the point. You get the feeling, as the movie continues its backwards flow from the nauseating aftermath of the beginning into earlier scenes of a friendlier and fi nally tender nature, that Noe had a very succinct knowledge of what he was doing when he constructed it this way. To have it move forward in chronological order as a simple rape and revenge drama would be exploitation, hands down. By having the murder take place in the first half-hour of the movie, with the motive as yet unknown, it makes the violence all the more horrifying. It is only later that we are shown the reason for it after we've already witnessed the vicious fate that befalls the supposed perpetrator so there is no lust for revenge, only a gnawing question about the nature of morality and justice.

So, does that make all of this okay? Does that validate a nine-minute long rape scene that might and most likely will be seen by children too young to understand the nature of art and censorship?

Before I bought the novel 'American Psycho' I read a few passages from it in the bookstore. I found it on a low shelf in Chapters, along with a number of other c opies right next to it, waiting to be picked up and read by whoever might wander on by. Once I had finished it easily one of the most exploitative, graphic, misogynistic and gratuitous works of popular literature ever written the most disturbing thought that remained with me was the ease with which I was able to attain it. In Australia, the book comes wrapped in cellophane and you have to purchase it over the counter, showing ID before it's yours. Justified? I'd like to say yes, but once again, I don't believe in censorship in any form. If you've read '1984' you'll catch my drift.

So here I am, shaken again for the first time in years by a piece of art that's already found its place in the world and, now that I've seen it, in my own head. Last night I sat down to watch 'Resevoir Dogs' again with a couple of friends who to my astonishment had never seen it before. During the first bloody scene one of my friends lost a little colour in his face and had to move furth er away from the television. I sat there meanwhile, feeling a strange sense of anesthesia as if a new layer of repaired tissue had bulked up around all of my emotional sensors and wondered just how numb these beliefs of mine might be able to make me.

Girl Fight Turkish NewsColumnist Arman Takes The Gloves Off Against Entertainment Queen Avsar

We mentioned back in May that Turkish beauty and Entertainment queen Hlya Avsar has had her detractors. But it wasn't until recently that they began lining up against her in such numbers. And they don't mind playing rough either.

For instance, the well-respected (and usually liberal-minded) female Newspaper Columnist Ayse Arman led off her anti-Avsar attack in late September saying, I don't descend to Hlya Avsar's low class!

That remark came after a series of exchanges between Columnist Arman and the loose-lipped entertainer that began when Avsar made the politically charged statement that, Turks who want to creat e a separate state should go ahead and do so. Let them live the way they want to live. For example, if Kurds want to establish a Kurdish state... it's similar to Turkey's desire to join the European Union.

When she heard Avsar's remark, Arman riposted, There are some people in show-business whose mouth-zipper is broken!

Arman added, Avsar should stick to what she's good at...beauty, acting, singing, entertaining -- and being cute. But when it comes to political subjects, especially heavy political issues...then I say, 'Hlya... Keep away, woman!'

These words naturally upset Ms. Avsar, and she came back with a salvo of her own. Ayse Arman writes too much about sex in her Newspaper column. She's got lovemaking, and such, on the brain. Well, she also practices what she preaches. She enticed the husband of a woman-friend of mine -- and broke up the couple's marriage. If I enter politics, I'll appoint Arman as the 'Minister Responsible for Breaking Up Happy Marri ages'.

And in Arman's News-column the next day entitled, Look At This Nasty Talk Ms. Arman retorted, I've learned moral lessons from almost everyone I know -- at one time or another. The one exception is Hlya Avsar...who, with a personal history like hers, has nothing to teach me or anyone else -- in the morals department.

Arman concluded...I suppose dear readers, that you're expecting me to fire back at Ms. Avsar, aren't you...? Well, I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint...and leave her talking to herself in the gutter where she belongs!

And it's not just Newspaper Columnists who've been having a field day with Ms. Avsar lately. Her peers in the Entertainment-business too are joining ranks against her...
